Josie Campbell Dellenbaugh Glastonbury, CT 908-256-6945 forjosie@yahoo.com The gifts that the 3 Wise Women are presenting are Life, Sustenance, and Wisdom. Women give practical gifts. I have modeled each of them in the same walking pose, stepping forward, walking in line. They are participating in a sacred procession, such as those seen in Egyptian reliefs and the Parthenon Frieze. Cassie Doyon/Pangea Mosaics 50 Island Street #20, Lawrence MA 01840 kcdoyon@gmail.com/ cassiedoyondesigns.net/ 978-771-0007 I work in mixed media with a strong focus on mosaics. I use a wide variety of materials in my work, including natural, foraged and found items such as sea glass, bone, driftwood and stone. My use of color is widely variable, from muted and earth toned to bright and psychedelic hues. Where mosaic work tends to be structured and planned, I try to incorporate spontaneity and serendipity within my pieces. I am particularly focused on surface design and pushing the boundaries of sculpture with unconventional and re-purposed materials. Much of my artwork is abstract in style and form, reflecting my lifelong interest in tribal art and artifacts from around the world. I was born and raised in a seaside town, and the ocean has been a powerful, repetitive theme through most every piece of art I have made. In addition, I like to create “color and texture memories” of places I’ve visited over the years, and to explore macro and micro- environments in nature. Bruce Hathaway Richmond, VT 05477 brucehathaway@sculpturedmetals.com www.sculpturedmetals.com In general I would characterize my work as being organic and minimalistic. Meditation on the curved line and expressing motion in a static sculpture constitute the major themes of my work. The potential of the single line or the undulating mixture of multiple curves to express emotions and relate to the natural world seems limitless. My work is intuitive and springs from my observation of the natural world which my sculptures reflect and amplify. Map #2: “Seventeen Lovely Leaves” Materials: Aluminum Price: $6,500 John Hay Estate at The Fells
Blaze Konefal Morningfire@tds.net The Windwave Grove is a continuation of the Windwave Series , an exploration of making the wind visible via kinetic sculpture. I started this series 4 year ago and had my first exhibition with a small horizontal square displayed at The Fells in 2018. Since then various Windwaves have been at Meredith, NH, Concord, NH and SculptureFest in Woodstock, Vt. Wind is all around us, often times invisible, especially on calm days, but do not be fooled, it is always moving. These leaves capture the slightest breeze with a quiver and handle the strongest gusts with the flexibility of a palm tree frond. Madeleine Lord Dudley, MA/ 617-480-7230 madilord@yahoo.com/ mlordsculpts.com Instagram: madeleinelordmadimetal I have worked with steel for over 30 years and have numerous permanent public art installations in New England and nationally. My Public Art in this welded style includes “Giraffe”, “Ostrich”, “Mr. Bo Jangles” and an “Angel” owned by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. I have exhibited with SculptureNow exhibit at The Mount, Lenox MA, with New England Sculptors Association and in the Range Lights Community Sculpture Garden, Newburyport MA. Map #5: “Gabriel” ($3,800) is the archangel in the Map #7: “Blue Morpho” ($4,500) is a cut steel story of the Annunciation. This piece was inspired by the drawing from a photo found in a vintage National crushed steel shelving which looked like wings, and a visit Geographic. I hope it expresses the wonder of the moment to the Russian Icon Museum in Clinton MA during a when a collector holds the fragile beauty of this amazing show of work dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The stylized migratory insect. It was a challenge to express net, wing angels in the icons were strong, gravity based, protective and careful handling in static cold metal. and graceful. Map #12: “Applause” ($3,200) is formed of welded scraps, including the wavy steel rods from theater chairs I found in the metal recycle when I lived in Winchester MA. This figure with bent barrel hoop arms and cast iron rod upper body, came to mind after several years of subscriptions to the Boston Symphony where my companion was quick to applaud, and often started a standing ovation. That explosive roaring appreciation in exchange for a miraculous performance is what I hope this piece expresses. John Hay Estate at The Fells
R Douglass Rice Stonington, CT/917-731-1816 drice1816@gmail.com/www.rdrart.com My sculpture is about abstraction, space, structure, color and playfulness. These sculptures are part of a series call "Evolution". These three (#'s 5,4 & 2) are part of "Evolution II". The pieces themselves evolve from each other. The bottom shape of the largest one is the exact top shape of the next one and this carries throughout for each piece. In addition, the ascending creeping size of each piece reminds me of life crawling out from the primordial ooze onto land and evolving into ever larger complex life forms. My sculpture practice begins with abstracted collage and/or a series of small cardboard cut outs. From 4" x 8" pieces of cardboard, I cut out various abstract shapes. Slotting the top of one and the bottom of another, I join them together creating a freestanding cardboard sculpture. Once this is complete, I do the same process with sheets of 3/4" AC plywood, cutting each of the abstract shapes with a jig saw. I then sand and paint them with high gloss metal paint, so that they looked like they are made of steel. From there I take the full-scale plywood pieces to a metal fabricator called Hillary and Company. They then cut the shapes out of two 4’x8’ sheets of 5/8’ aluminum with a water jet. Another factory called Jay Pro then powder coats them to a high gloss “industrial painted” finish. I currently have six sculptures on display in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island “Evolution II, #’s 2, 3, and 5” Map #’s 4, 9, and 1 Materials: Powder coated aluminum Price: #2 is $3,200; #3 is $4,000; #5 is $7,500 John Hay Estate at The Fells
Sophie Linnell & Claire Roll Stoneham, MA 02180 claireeliseroll@gmail.com www.sophielinnell.com/www.claireeliseroll.com Fractal is a site specific kinetic sculptural installation specifically created to uphold the ecological mission of the John Hay Estate at The Fells. The work sets out to explore the biomorphic nature of repetition and the unassuming slow process of revelation through physical and tactile experience. A Fractal is a pattern bound by the laws of nature that repeats at different scales. You can find examples everywhere in the forest and in the gardens on this site. Trees are natural fractals, patterns that repeat smaller and smaller copies of themselves to create the biodiversity of a forest. Branches are like telescoping mechanisms reaching out for the sun. Each tree branch, from the trunk to the tips, is a copy of the one that came before it. This is a basic principle that we see over and over again in the fractal structure of organic life forms throughout the natural world. The piece reveals itself in various ways and transforms via the kinetic energy of wind. Modular cell-like forms come together, piece by piece, to create an organic, transformed, and connected space. The exterior frames are made of discarded wood scraps that have been reclaimed from construction sites. Small propellers made of everyday recyclable material within each of the irregular polygon cells, create sound, movement, and reflection of light as a part of the immersive experience. As we learn to see the beauty and purpose in the slow and unassuming process of nature, we question the value of that which we leave behind — the discarded refuse. Our sense of beauty and worth is held in the way we frame things: the way we give name to things. The multiple repeating apertures within the composition outline different aspects of the landscape and create movement, inside and out, drawing attention to that which is open — to that which changes. Breaking our normal patterns and giving attention to these small acts, small movements as they build over time, results in a transformation of the way we see. Perhaps garbage isn’t garbage at all. Perhaps if we reframe the way we think it can be used as a valuable resource to benefit nature.
