›› | TRUE LAPLAND WITH THE EXPERTS THE NORTHERN LIGHTS BY DR STUART CLARK There is little that can compare to the beauty of the Northern Lights. From a subtle glow of pale light across the sky to shimmering waves of emerald green, these displays can appear at any time. They reach up into the sky, drawing our eyes towards the Universe beyond. Seeing the Northern Lights from the magnificent Arctic landscape of Karesuando only amplifies their beauty. This village is home to just 300 people and is found in Lapland, straddling the border between Finland and Sweden. The frozen river that cuts the village serves as the border between the two countries, and the settlement is surrounded by a rolling landscape of frozen lakes and plains that provide excellent sites from which to view the Northern Lights. ›› WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? ›› | TRUE LAPLAND WITH THE EXPERTS KILPISJARVI KARESUANDO ADVENTURES ON THE ENONTEKIO NORTHERN LIGHTS ROUTE LAPLAND The Northern Lights Route is a stretch of road which weaves through three countries in Lapland (Finland, ARCTIC CIRCLE Sweden and Norway) and is officially recognised by the governments of those countries as being one of the best places in the world to witness the spectacle of the Northern Lights. The road starts at the island city of Tromso in the north of Norway, and runs to the twin cities SWEDEN of Swedish Haparanda and Finnish Tornio on the Bay of Bothnia. The Route offers excellent chances of seeing the Northern Lights because of its location, which is predominantly within the Arctic Circle. Because of the lack of commercial city life nearby, light pollution is virtually non-existent for the most FINLAND part, which means that the Aurora’s intensity is not impaired and it appears greater than it would in cities such as Rovaniemi or Reykjavik in Iceland. NORWAY Along the Route, which stretches for 620 kilometres, you can find some of Lapland’s best sights and attractions. From husky sledding across the Arctic OSLO tundra to snowmobiling down frozen rivers, an appearance of the Northern Lights could bless the most exhilarating of winter activities. The resorts of both HELSINKI Kilpisjarvi and Karesuando are located directly on the Northern Lights Route and whilst a sighting of the Aurora can never be guaranteed, your chances on an Arctic Spirit break are pretty high!
