What’s On Summer at Last …and welcome to what will be my last season as Artistic Director. 03 Robin Hood & Over the 20 years that I’ve been here there has been a huge increase in the range of what we offer at the arts centre and in the the Revolting Peasants number of people who come to see shows, look at exhibitions or 04 April take part in courses and workshops. The ‘Electrophon’ combines traditional source material and new music technology, syncing step motion from the resonating steel comb of a c1880 polyphon machine with digital and midi time code to create new instrumental music on 20” steel discs, with which Luke plays along on guitar, melodeon and sings. April Kitchen Zoo The Tin Foil Astronaut Friday 13 April 11.00am & 2.00pm Today is the day of the space race! A race to put the first human on the Moon! But our astronaut isn’t quite like others... she’s different. Alba has been in training and she has even made her own rocket! But can she really power a rocket with crisps? What is past Pluto? Are there robots in Space? And will anyone ever listen to the smallest of space explorers? With original live music and puppets, this is a story of discovery, individuality and a celebration of differences for 3-7 year olds and their families. Also a fine concert singer and keen cricket lover, he muses on international politics and history as they affect the Black world from Africa to the USA and Britain, from the point of view of one who would rather watch sports, and spread love and peace through the medium of song. April War on the Floor Sunday 22 April 6.00pm Karate at its most exciting with the best of Seiken Ryu students. War on the Floor celebrates the speed, ferocity and physicality of competition team karate sparring. The Seiken Ryu students will also demonstrate team kata and advanced karate skills. Expect an action packed evening that will leave you breathless and might even encourage you to take up the sport yourself! Tickets: £10.00 New Old Friends Crimes Under the Sun Tuesday 24 April 7.30pm Inspired by Agatha Christie, Hitchcock and film noir, you are invited on an hilarious but murderous trip to a classic English Riviera retreat. A secluded island hotel just off the English coast becomes a crime scene, as a scandal- inducing femme-fatale is felled. All the guests on the island are suspects, but are they alone and is this the first crime this idyllic island has witnessed? Award-winning theatre company New Old Friends present Crimes Under the Sun, a comedy thriller directed by James Farrell (Associate Director - The 39 Steps, West End). The show features four actors playing multiple outrageous characters, and a plot that romps along in the company’s trademark inventive style. July Headway Arts Theatre Co Hold Your Peace Tuesday 10 July 7.30pm Set in the summer of 1919 during preparations for a ‘Peace Tea’ garden party, Hold Your Peace tells a thought provoking tale of the impact of the Great War (1914- 1918) on the lives and loves of the residents of The Orchards and tells the untold stories of the lives of learning disabled people during the Great War. This exhibition is an offline selection of what has been shown on the platform to date and includes a mix of work by regional and national artists. The online platform has been a great way to share this work and the work of the Queens Hall Digital programme across the more rural parts of Northumberland (and the rest of the world). But, we are taking this opportunity to celebrate these works in the gallery space to create a shared viewing experience. Tynedale Sounds Society Saturday 4 August – Saturday 8 September GALLERY ONE Tynedale Sounds Society will be a creative, participatory, public programme and exhibition designed as a sonic celebration and experiential interpretation of Tynedale’s contemporary aural environment and sound heritage. The programme and exhibition will be a mix of public and community engagement activity that involves collecting, listening, skill sharing, distribution and promotion of creative sonic practices and experiences of the Tynedale area of South West Northumberland.
