Hello Cheviot Enthusiast, Wow, what a frustrating year 2020 was in so many ways. However, it is time to put 2020 behind us as the view is always bigger out the front window than through the rearview mirror. As we look forward to 2021 there are a lot of positives in the sheep world. Lamb prices are very strong currently, cull ewe prices are at record highs and planning for sales and shows are moving full speed ahead in most parts of the United States. Although registration numbers were down in 2020, we expect a recovery as many sheep were not registered due to lack of shows and sales. So, if you have sheep that you need to get registered from 2020 do not hesitate to send those registration applications in to the registry office. As we look to sale and show season, the ACSS online sale will be April 20 th , consider entering a ewe or two in that sale. Online sales have become very popular and it is a chance to spread your genetics to different parts of the US or add some new genetics to your flock from the various Cheviot online sales. Springfield, Illinois will be the site of two of the biggest Cheviots events of the summer. The National Cheviot sale and annual meeting will be held there June 11- 12. This is always a fun well attended event where you can meet Cheviot breeders from all over the USA. The All-American Junior Show will also be held in Springfield, Illinois on July 1-4. This is always one of the largest shows for the Cheviot juniors throughout the year. Make plans to attend one or both of these events in Springfield this summer. In closing, let’s work together to grow the Cheviot breed and help new breeders of all ages get started with their Cheviots. It is important to help those newbies feel welcomed into our breed and they appreciate any assistance that you can provide them. Jeff Ebert ACSS Executive Secretary Page 4 - 2021 Cheviot Journal

Happy spring time to all as we work our way into what we hope is a normal sheep season. After a very challenging and frustrating year, I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say it’s time for a spring, summer and fall that is filled with sheep sales, sheep shows, and other sheep events. It does appear most events are set to go for this year, but as we all have become aware, we will wait and see if life throws us another curveball. I just returned from the Ohio dorset sale where the enthusiasm was very high and the sale average was also impressive and at record levels. Camaraderie was rebuilt and friendships were rekindled throughout the event. Typically the Ohio dorset sale sets the tone for the rest of the sale season across all breeds. I am confident that it will again this year not only in sale average and quality, but also in laughter and enthusiasm. Here in the Cheviot breed, we have a lot to look forward to! Our national show and sale is a week earlier than normal this year on June 11-12. Mark your calendar‘s for what should be a tremendous event! Much like the dorset sale, there is likely to be incredible quality animals at our national sale after a year of building up and preparing for it. Please look through sheep calendars and check websites for all the other sale opportunities as we gear up for what could be one of the greatest summer and fall show seasons we have seen in years. Everyone I talk to in the sheep business, is excited to showcase their animals and get back together with old sheep friends at these events. In the meantime, make sure you get all of your lambs registered and communicate with your potential buyers as we close in on what I assume will be a great year in the sheep business! I hope everyone had a great lambing season and is ready to shut down the zoom calls and replace them with some good in-person conversations. So let’s get all those kids off the couch and let’s all get excited about showcasing our Cheviots and making the purchases that will increase our quality and quantity moving forward. In closing, I wish everyone the best of luck this year, whether that is aspiring to win at the shows or just having a healthy and beautiful group to admire on your pasture. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the events this year. Also, please introduce yourself to me if we haven’t met in person. I always enjoy meeting new people and I am very receptive to hearing ideas that may help our breed moving forward. Best regards, Dan Spilde Page 6 - 2021 Cheviot Journal

This will be the first time the All American has visited Illinois and we are looking forward to bringing the show to a state that is a hot bed for the purebred sheep industry! The Illinois committee is hard at work, planning the show and we all are very optimistic on the show going ahead this year in Illinois. Yes, there will be COVID-19 safety protocols in place to ensure this event’s happening and hopefully as the spring progresses we won’t have to implement all we are gearing up for, but we will do whatever is required of us to have a safe and healthy event for all of exhibitors and their families! Special for this 2021 show only, the upper age limit has been extended to include those who are 22 years of age as of January 1 st , we want to make sure that all of exhibitors have the experience of showing and knowing theyare in their last All American.
