All Aboard for 2021! I sincerely hope that each and every one of you enjoyed a safe and enjoyable holiday season. As we head into January, all of us here at the Colorado Railroad Museum are hoping—and planning—for a much better year! Here’s a preview of some activities headed our way at the Museum for early 2021: The Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday. Our paid and volunteer staff team is adhering to all COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines for everyone’s safety. While winter weather can be challenging and we therefore offer less programming, this time of year can be especially relaxing. There’s also plenty of room for social distancing! If you are planning to visit soon, please remember that masks are currently required per State and county directives. Saturday Train Rides resume operation on January 16, 2021! Advance ticket purchase is recommended, as train capacity is still reduced in recognition of COVID-19 safety protocols. Members, you can reserve a train time free of charge online as well. If you’re looking for somewhere to take the family, make the Museum part of your plans! In February, we’ll be opening two all-new exhibits that will shine a spotlight on some of the diverse people the railroad has influenced and/or been influenced by in Colorado. One exhibit will look at those who migrated to Colorado, and how the railroad hastened and shaped the journey. The other will explore the African-American experience and railroads. We’ll have more to share in our next edition of the Telegrapher. Our team has created a schedule of programs and activities for 2021, with some changes and new additions. We are again planning to host Day Out With Thomas in September, and The Polar Express Train Ride in November-December. For the first six months of the year, however, our Calendar of Events is light on special events. Because the year remains uncertain, we’ll be releasing our Calendar and taking online ticketing
reservations only a few weeks in advance, in case changes become necessary. In the meantime, my wish for you and those you love is to stay safe and warm. We hope to see you soon at the Museum! Paul Hammond Executive Director IN THIS ISSUE: Saturday Train Rides Resume January 16! Upcoming Exhibits (opening in February) Calendar of Events for 2021 New Online Content Saturday Train Rides Resume January 16! Museum Is Open (Tues-Sun) It’s January 2021, and that means it’s time for Saturday Train Rides to resume! Starting January 16, trains will operate every Saturday through May. (Thereafter, frequency increases for the summer.) Trains depart every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a lunch break for the crew at 12:30 p.m. (no departure at that time). With COVID-19 caseloads still a concern, we will begin the operating season with trains operating at half capacity, pulled by our trusty diesel-electric locomotive No. 4. We recommend advance ticket purchase; on busy days selected departures often sell out. Members, don’t forget that you can also book your tickets in advance, at no charge, for regular train rides!
Train Tickets (separate from admission) are $4 adults, $2 ages 2-17 and seniors. Remember, Museum Membership provides free admission and regular train rides year- round! Not a member? Visit our web site by clicking here to learn more, or call us at (303) 279-4591 during business hours. The Museum will be open Tuesday-Sunday (closed Mondays) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On days where winter weather is especially challenging, call us at (303) 279-4591 to make sure we’re open. There are occasional days when the snow is so deep, or the ice so slick, that it’s simply not safe for us to open the Museum. But most of the time, we’re here like clockwork so you can enjoy your visit. All Aboard! Upcoming Exhibits (Opening in February) Two rather timely exhibits will be opening at the Colorado Railroad Museum this winter, and both will remain available throughout 2021! Work is now under way for installation of these exhibits, Colorado Railroads and the Black Experience and Across the Fruited Plains: Migrating West to Colorado by Rail. Both will focus on some of the diverse people who influenced and were affected by railroads in Colorado. Here’s a brief recap of each exhibit: Colorado Railroads & the Black Experience February 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021 The story of railroads in America is closely intertwined with that of African Americans. Black families share tales of railroading ancestors who endured hardship, exploitation, opportunity, and change. Using objects and archival materials from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as from friends in our community, this exhibit strives to tell some of those stories. Across the Fruited Plains: Migrating West to Colorado by Rail Feb 14, 2021 – Jan 22, 2022 Westward expansion took on a decidedly “iron horse” look in the 1870s. While some still ventured westward via covered wagon, railroads not only made the trip faster, but would-be
settlers could transport as many or as few of their belongings as they chose. The railroad could even sell you the land on which to settle! This exhibit uses objects and archival materials to explore what it took to come west to Colorado in the age of rail, and why one would choose to make the trip. We’ll share more information in the next edition of the Telegrapher! Calendar of Events for 2021 As we head into 2021, we’re planning our Calendar of Events for 2021 here at the Colorado Railroad Museum. The first few months are fairly straightforward; Saturday train rides, Friday tours, and regular favorites such as Storytime & Craft. Our two new exhibits (opening in February) will offer updated content for 2021. We hope to host two special events in the May-June timeframe. One is slated to be a steamup event featuring our operating narrow- gauge steam locomotives, while the other is a return of our popular Dinosaur Train. Of course, we also plan to host Day Out With Thomas for three weekends in September, plus THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride for about six weeks in November-December. The only unknown is when tickets will go on sale – stay tuned! (By the way, did you know that the Colorado Railroad Museum was the ONLY heritage railroad attraction to host both Day Out With Thomas and THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride in 2020? We didn’t plan for this to be the case, but our paid and volunteer staff team is very proud that we were able to plan and execute these events carefully, incorporating all appropriate measures to ensure that guests, cast and crew alike remained safe.) It’s no secret that the pandemic continues to affect our region, every state in the U.S., and much of the world. With this in mind, the Colorado Railroad Museum is planning for the possibility that our 2021 plans may need to change—especially through June. Thus, we
anticipate releasing each month’s Calendar of Events only a few weeks in advance, until more certainty returns to our world. We hope that you’ll bear with us, and plan to spend some of your time in Golden at the Colorado Railroad Museum! Right now, nobody knows how the coming year will unfold. But we’ll be doing our very best to continue highlighting Colorado’s rich railroad heritage, all year long. We look forward to supporting the motto we introduced in 2020: “Still On Track!” For the latest updates, please visit our website. And thank you for your continued interest and support.
