WHO WE ARE THE AFRICAN BAR ASSOCIATION Formed in 1971 as a professional body uniting individual lawyers and National Legal Associations in Africa, the African Bar Association (AFBA) was created as a federation of national legal associations, corporate and unincorporated legal entities and individual lawyers. The Association seeks amongst other objectives to foster exchange of opinions and experiences among members, formulation of policies that would better reposition the Continent's socio-economic and political development and advancement with the law as the bedrock for these developments, and breaking new legal frontiers. The Association seeks to bring together the five African Sub-regional Lawyers, their respective National Associations spread over the African Continent. As “the Fearless Voice of the Legal Profession”, the African Bar Association also seeks to take the African Legal Community to the Global Stage. Encourage fraternity amongst Lawyers, defend the Profession, the Principles of the Rule of Law and to make Africa Accountable. The African Bar Association's headquarters is situated in Abuja, Nigeria with a functional deputy headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. By the Charter of the African Bar Association regional offices are spread across the sub- regions. 2018 CONFERENCE HOST Nairobi is Kenya's Capital and the largest City in Kenya. In addition to its urban core, the City has Nairobi National Park, a large game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos and home to Giraffes, Zebras and Lions. Next to it is a well-regarded Elephant Orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Nairobi is also often used as a jumping-off point for safari trips elsewhere in Kenya. It has many beautiful restaurants that serve the tastes of visitors from all parts of the world with its landscape dotted by various rendezvous spots. Nightlife in Nairobi could be one of the most wonderful things to experience. This is the venue for the 2018 Annual Conference of the African Bar Association. 2018 CONFERENCE OVERVIEW The 2018 AFBA Conference will hold from the 22nd – 27th of July, 2018 at the Kenyatta International Conference Center, Nairobi, Kenya. The AFBA Annual Conference is a yearly event staged in different Cities and Jurisdictions across the African Continent. It seeks to bring together Lawyers from within and outside the Continent to interface with other Professionals, Businessmen and women, Lawmakers, Government Officials, Politicians, the Armed Forces and other Security Agencies, Captains of Industry, Multi-national and Trans-national Organizations, Renowned Experts and Africans from all walks of life to espouse the Law, dissect Legal developments for the future of the Profession and to discuss issues that touch and concern the present and the future Prosperity, Security, Democracy and the Rule of Law in Africa. This is with a view to finding solutions and making appropriate recommendations to appropriate authorities and bodies. Against the background of various Socio- economic and Political issues facing the Continent and the incurable optimism that Africa is the future of the world, bold attempts are being made across the Continent to actualize this dream and bring Africa to the center stage of world Commerce and Politics. CONFERENCE OUTLOOK The Conference will begin partially on Saturday, July 21st, 2018 when registration and picking of Conference Security tags and other materials will begin at 2:00pm at the designated registration point at the Kenyatta International Conference Center, Nairobi, Kenya. Registration and collection of tags and materials will continue at the designated areas up till Thursday, July 26th, 2018 at 3pm. It starts at 8:00am and closes at 5:00pm daily. The Conference will begin effectively on Sunday, July 22nd, 2018 with the Chairman's 7
opening reception/party. This party is organized to welcome registered Participants and their Guests. It is also in honour of the Chairman of the Governing Council of the African Bar Association. This programme will begin at 6:00pm and may continue late into the night. Dressing is casual and it will take different forms of African Night's Entertainment. One of the high points of the conference is the President’s Annual Bar Dinner. This will hold from 5pm on an appointed date during the conference. It is a ticketed event and cost $50 or Ksh5200. You can obtain your ticket at the Registration Desk. T he formal opening ceremonies of the Conference will hold on Monday, July 23rd, 2018 beginning at 10:00am at the KICC. There is a special programme for the opening ceremonies which will be contained in the Conference Brochure and on our website. The opening ceremonies will be followed by a showcase session or sessions dedicated to a very topical issue(s) picked out of the arranged Conference Contents. Showcase Sessions will consist of a moderator and several discussants who make presentations and are later joined by the participating audience and at the end a common ground consisting of recommended solutions are agreed on and used as part of the final Communique for the Conference. Showcase Sessions are not limited to the first day only, it could also occur on other days of the Conference as part of the daily calendar of Sessions. The only distinguishing features is that no other Parallel Session goes on while the showcase event is on. All Participants and guests are welcome to attend. 8
CONFERENCE SESSIONS The other days of the Conference are dedicated to breakout Sessions on different topics holding Parallel in different rooms. The topics and time are in the Conference Programme and can also be assessed in the AFBA Daily Newsletter or at our website. MEETINGS Meetings of different Forums, Committees, Sub-regional Groups and Organizations are contained in the final Programme of the Conference. Please check the Programme to know where and when your Committee or Forum or other Groups are meeting. If you are not already in any of the Forums and Committees of AFBA, please attend the meeting of your choice and register there. You may also seek information from the information and media center at the Conference venue. Please note that some of the meetings come in the form of Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner and fees may be charged. Get full details before you set out and register on time if this is required prior to the meeting. KEYNOTE ADDRESS The Keynote Address will only be delivered by the Keynote Speaker at the opening ceremonies immediately after the Special Guest of Honour has declared the Conference open. Other Sessions like the Showcase and Split Sessions or meetings may have a Main Speaker. LANGUAGE All working Sessions and Conference Materials will be printed in English and French. LAKE NAKURU DAYTRIP Lake Nakuru National Park is flamingo land. It is home to a huge number of lesser flamigos. At any given time, every flamingo in the world seems to be at this beautiful shallow alkaline lake, just south of Nakuru town. The lake is a spectacular ocean of pink surrounded by forest and plains that are home other wildlife too. With a total area size of 368 square kilometers and home to more than 450 different kinds of birds, Lake Nakuru park is one of the finest ornithological sights in the world. The Lake is world famous as the location of the greatest bird spectacle on earth. AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK Ambodeli National Park is located in Loitoktok District, Rift Valley province of Kenya. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq. mi) in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometers (3,100 sq. mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. In Amboseli’s case it is big skies and far horizons combined with swampy spring and dry and dusty earth trampled by hundreds of animals. NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK, NAIROBI ORPHANAGE AND GIRAFFE CENTRE TOUR You will be Picked-up in the morning at 6:30am to explore Nairobi National Park, Nairobi orphanage and later the Giraffe Centre. Lunch can be at a restaurant (Tamambo Karen Blixen Coffee Garden restaurant) or any other restaurant of your choice within the vicinity. As we tour the city, we see the most interesting elements of Nairobi. First stop in Nairobi National Park. The park is only a few kilometers from the city centre. The National Park is only 7km from Nairobi Nairobi City Centre. The small park (113sq.km) contains all the major animals species with the exception of the Elephant. The sight of Wildlife grazing majestically against the backdrop of the city skyline is a pleasant experience and then Nairobi Orphanage - it serves a treatments and rehabilitation centre for wild animals. The Orphanage hosts lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, serval cats, rare Sokoke cats, warthogs, leopard, various monkey, baboons and buffalo. Various birds can also be viewed including parrots, guinea fowl, crowned cranes and ostriches. David Sheldrick is a world-class conservation figure and the premier authority on the successful raising of milk-dependent infant and rhino orphans. Your tour takes you to the Giraffe Centre, an elevated treetop area where you may hand feed giraffes under the supervision of trained staff. Established by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville in 1979 as a sanctuary for the rare Rothschild giraffe, the centre has a feeding platform where visitor can get views of the tall animals at eye level. Here a resident expert also presents a private briefing on the Centre’s work to save the endangered Rothschild giraffe.
