Green Spaces & Property Values We all know the benefits of getting outside: social, spiritual, physical, psychological but did you know parks, green spaces and ponds help raise property values in addition to spirits? A well-designed park or green space is beautiful to the eye but the benefits of them are also far-reaching for our communities. They: • encourage residents of the community to play and be more active • provide a safe area for people to walk through in the evenings • boost social interactions which can lead to reduced crime • unite communities and encourage residents to engage with nature Ponds end up lightening the load of sewage and storm water runoff, as they are much more effective and exponentially less expensive at storm water management than man-made sewers. Rest and recreation resonates so strongly with people that they are willing PARKS FOUNDATION CALGARY WWW.PARKSFDN.COM 403.974.0751 to pay extra for proximity to a setting OCTOBER 2017 that allows them to unwind. The National Association of Realtors survey found that 50 percent of home buyers were prepared to pay 10 percent more for the same house if located near a park as well to schools. But it’s not only homeowners who value parks, property values are now higher near parks and with increased interest in park investment, businesses are willing to spend top dollar developing properties with even greater profits.
