Remarks Program Welcome to the 2021 Academic Honors Convocation at Otterbein University! Welcome…………………...........................................................................................................................John L. Comerford President of the University Today we formally recognize those students whose work has distinguished them in their disciplines, across multiple Special Music fields, and in their co-curricular lives. While success at the university level is always to be commended, perhaps this Fantaisie (Op. 79)...................................................................................................................... Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) year’s group of awardees warrants an extra dose of admiration. It has been no small feat to remain focused and steadfast Alexis A. Hefley, ’21, flute in the face of the societal challenges we all faced over the past year. And so, on behalf of the faculty and staff of Otterbein Suzanne Newcomb, piano University: sincerest congratulations to every student who is being honored today. Presentation of Student Academic Honors………………….......................................................... Sean M. McLaughlin Today we also unveil three Teaching Award recipients, and I ask that you join me in expressing appreciation for Master of Ceremonies these individuals’ unwavering commitment to student learning. While each year we can only recognize a few of the extraordinary faculty at Otterbein University, for me, it is a highlight of each spring to be able to celebrate colleagues Outstanding Teaching Awards.................................................................................................. Wendy R. Sherman Heckler for their outstanding work. Provost and Senior Vice President Otterbein’s annual Academic Honors Convocation also pays tribute to the strength of our community. The foundation * Otterbein Love Song................................................................................................................Senior Quartet, pre-recorded for today’s event was provided by the friends and alumni who have made these awards possible through their generous Kain M. Anderson, ’21 support of excellence at Otterbein. Their gifts enhance our work and allow our campus to flourish. And the connections Emily K. Conner, ’21 don’t stop there. Routinely, our students tell me that their ability to meet their many and lofty goals was dependent on Wyatt C. Price, ’21 the time and attention given by faculty mentors, staff advisors, family supporters, and caring friends. I know that each Carrie J. Robb, ’21 honoree will share gratitude where it is due, and I extend my own appreciation for the cheering and coaching, cajoling and consoling that no doubt led us all to today’s celebration. The first part, dealing with caps, allows the mortarboard or Oxford type cap. Occasionally, the Cambridge model, a soft cap resembling a beret, is worn. Either type is correct as Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma Outstanding Senior Award Tiffany N. Martin long as it is black and of an appropriate material, except that velvet is reserved for doctors. Awarded to the graduating senior member(s) of Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta The tassel worn with the cap has three variations. First, it may be black for any degree. Second, it may be in the color Sigma with a high cumulative grade point average and active participation; of the major field of learning in which the degree was granted. Third, a tassel of gold metallic may be worn by doctors the recipient’s name is added to the Alpha Lambda/Phi Eta plaque in and governing officials of institutions. Some schools make a ceremony of switching the tassel from the right to the left the library at the moment the degree is awarded as a substitute for individual hooding of candidates. The second main part of academic regalia concerns the gown which should be all black, aside from variations in Torch and Key Endowed Tuition Award Tracy Rawlings materials and fullness. The bachelor’s gown falls in straight lines from a fairly elaborate yoke. Its distinguishing characteristic A gift from the Torch and Key Society awarded in honor of Dr. Robert Katlyn M. Wilson is the long pointed sleeves. A master’s gown is distinguished by an arc-shaped panel on the long or short sleeve. The Price H’60, Mr. John Becker ’50, and Dr. Harold Hancock H’69 to a junior doctor’s gown is an elaborate costume marked by velvet panels down the front and around the neck as well as by three Torch and Key member(s) who has shown evidence of leadership qualities bars of the same materials on the bell-shaped sleeves. It is cut much fuller than the other gowns and unlike them may be in Otterbein activities ornamented in color. Both the panelling and the sleeve bars may show the area in which the degree was awarded. The third main component of academic regalia is the hood which makes clear the level of the degree, the area in Bernadine Edwards Endowed Award Tracy Rawlings which it was given and the institution which awarded it. The size of the hood and the width of the velvet trimming shows Awarded to a student who demonstrates a high level of success and/or the level of study. The more advanced the degree, the longer the hood and wider the velvet trim. The color of the trim leadership in the public or community sector and shows potential for identifies the area in which the degree was awarded. Arts, letters and humanities are represented by white; education is academic excellence light blue; fine arts is brown; law is purple; music is pink; nursing is apricot; philosophy is dark blue; science is golden yellow; and theology is scarlet. The lining of a hood bears the official colors of the institution from which the degree Glendine Huggins Wadlington Memorial Endowed Award Lorraine H.
