ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER EDUCATION 2020 FLEXIBLE PROGRAMS OF STUDY FOR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDERS At Western Sydney University we offer two undergraduate degrees delivered by block mode model. The block mode model is designed to help our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students remain in their community so they can fulfil their family, career, cultural and social responsibilities. Studying a block mode degree program requires students to attend up to six residential on-campus visits each year, lasting approximately one to three weeks. Travel, accommodation and meal costs to attend workshops are funded for ABSTUDY approved students. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (PRIMARY) ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER EDUCATION Western recognises the need for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers in the classroom and is committed to assisting with addressing this issue. The development of the program was a strategic initiative of the University and has contributed to providing more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Teachers in the education system. The Bachelor of Education (Primary) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education is a four-year undergraduate degree offered at Bankstown campus. This degree gives you the skills and understanding to teach effectively across the full curriculum range in kindergarten to year 6. It comprises a full suite of foundation, primary curriculum and school-based subjects, including a range of professional experiences. The degree develops your cultural perspectives as they relate to schools and communities. Professional experience is undertaken in schools in students’ home communities and in Sydney. BACHELOR OF COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT The Bachelor of Community and Social Development is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who wish to contribute to building sustainable capacity in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The degree provides three different strands of skills and knowledge: skills in working directly with families in providing welfare advocacy; skills and knowledge in community development; and skills and knowledge in community leadership and sustainability. Graduates from the degree will be skilled to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities in a range of settings and capacities and to contribute to the leadership and sustainability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
