Abilene Performing Arts Company, Inc. Abilene Performing Arts Company, Inc. is a non-profit, youth-centered organization offering performers at all levels a place to fulfill their dreams. APAC has been offering performing arts classes since 1999. All classes are taught by a highly qualified and professional staff. Classes are grouped according to the age of the student with a strong consideration placed on the level of proficiency & ability. Students are taken into our program as early as three months of age & may study through adulthood. We offer beginning classes for the novice, as well as advanced classes for the more serious performer. Classes are available four days a week at various times to accommodate today’s busy families. APAC is proud to be the only studio in Abilene to offer four departments - Musical Theatre, Theatre, Dance, & Kindermusik - under one roof. Providing such a variety of classes under one company name offers a more convenient & affordable opportunity for our families. Students involved in these classes will have multiple opportunities to perform, as well as a solid preparation base for other company & community auditions. APAC’s mission statement is to capture the in- terest & develop the talents of individuals through musical theatre, dance, theatre & Kindermusik. We strive to bring together staff, participants, board members, donors, & audience members from across the region & across the socioeconomic & ethnic spectrum as we work with young people to build self-esteem, confi- dence, lasting friendships, & memories. APAC is a place for young people to belong. MUSICAL THEATRE DEPARTMENT These classes are designed to teach stage presence, proper singing, musicianship, pitch recognition, team- work, stamina, listening skills, and stage movement appropriate to the ability of the student. Students will study the history of musical theatre including composers, choreographers, genres, eras, and styles. Musical selections will include pieces from a varied repertoire including musical theatre, film score, art song, and much more. Private lessons are also available for high school age students through adults. DANCE DEPARTMENT APAC offers beginning through advanced training in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and modern lyrical. Correct technique, muscle development, and coordination will be emphasized as well as confidence, poise, and discipline. Strong emphasis will be placed on personal expression through dance as well as studying variations of dance within a range of performance venues. Students will be challenged according to their age and ability and will be exposed to many styles of dance to better pinpoint individual strengths and talents. KINDERMUSIK DEPARTMENT With more than 25 years of experience in creating curricula based on new and proven research in child development, Kindermusik International is the world’s leading publisher of music and movement curricula for parents and their children. The award-winning books, CDs, games, and instruments will develop and nurture critical developmental skills in the whole child: Cognitive, Physical, Social, Emotional, and Language. In a Kindermusik class, an educator leads a group of parents and their children through joyful activities, using music and movement. Parents learn more about their child’s unique developmental process, and the shared learning experience creates a unique bond as the child associates learning with fun, musical play. The l earning process then continues at home, guided by specially designed books, CDs, and games. THEATRE DEPARTMENT Theatre classes focus on the actor’s three basic tools: the voice, the body, and the mind. Throughout the course of the school year students gain skills such as team work, self confidence, memorization, and problem solving. They participate in activities such as auditioning, developing and producing scenes with partners, developing and producing their own script, and conclude the year with a class one act play.
The Divyne Shine Award The Divyne Shine Award was created and established in 2012 at APAC’s May Show in honor of 12 year old Divyne Kim. During our 2012 dress rehearsal I watched an emotionally determined young lady take the stage with the rest of her musical theatre class to rehearse. Her body worked against her making this a difficult task. She knew she could rest and go on when she was ready but continued with persistence. Divyne was meeting her physical challenge with cerebral palsy head on. Nothing was going to keep her from that chance to perform. That night I was stirred by Divyne’s willpower to get on the stage and perform despite the challenges she was facing. Her cries of frustration were felt by all that were around her, yet she would not give up. She performed that next day in the show, without hesitation or reservation. The “Divyne Shine” Award … acknowledging those who shine through their adversities. Honorees 2012 - Divyne Kim 2013 - Kayla Copher and Cassie Altum 2014 - Lily Lofton 2015 - The Dow Family 2016 - Neeca Martin 2017 - The Kristin Ward Family 2018 - Julia Hollingsworth 2019 - Pistol Foster and Addison McCorquodale 2021 Honoree I would like to dedicate this year’s Divyne Shine Award to all of our APAC students. I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the diligence of our students to plow ahead, masks and all! This year has been so incredibly strange. To find some normal has been a stretch. But within the APAC walls somehow that has been achieved. I love my job, I love these people! Thank you for showing me how to persevere and for shining a glimmer of light onto my path. Congratulations APAC students...Divyne Shine 2021
