"My work as an artist is inspired by spiritual practices, intuitive imaginations and research into the deep and transversal evils that mark our contemporary world." OUARDANE 2
PRESENTATION OF THE ARTIST Abderrahmane OUARDANE 31/03/1947 Casablanca Morocco Living artist Biography Abderrahmane OUARDANE, artist born in 1947 in Morocco. Laureate of the Ateliers Beaux-Arts THUR in Paris, he has exhibited regularly since 1970. He lives in Casablanca and works between Morocco and France. His friendships with the pupils of the effervescent Academy of Fine Arts "l'EW cole de Casablanca" which brings together trans-Mediterranean modernists such as BELKAHIA*, MELIHI, CHABAZ A, have allowed him to sharpen extremely rich creative experiences always in a spirit of renewal. 70'- 80's: At the Ateliers des Beaux-Arts THUR in Paris, Abderrahmane OUARDANE learns to draw the human body. He devoted his \irst exhibitions to the theme of the artistic nude. OUARDANE erects its creations in a real plea dedicated to women. 80' - 90's: Back in Morocco, his spiritual retreats in the Amazigh High Atlas, precisely on the highlands of Imilchil, represent a decisive stage of his artistic imprint. The timeless silhouettes he encounters there; all the treasures of signs, symbols and traces of heritage inspire him, awaken his memory, profoundly in\luence his creations and give birth to his singular imprint. 90's – Contemporary Period: His attendance at artistic residencies is multiplying around the world and allowing him to multiply creative experiences. His career path leads him to Contemporary Art. His creations bear a very atypical and diversi\ied imprint between painting, sculpture, installation and performance. His art draws its source from the intangible heritage in a context of mutations between historical past and present or futuristic reality, oscillating according to the consistency of the energies that cross it, whether social, political, poetic; normative, constructive or dissenting. * This year 2021, at the Centre Pompidou, in Paris, under the direction of Michel Gauthier, a posthumous retrospective was dedicated to BELKAHIA, essential artist of the postcolonial age and protagonist of the "Casablanca School", Jigurehead of artistic modernity, generational colleague of OUARDANE. 3
Presentation of the artist's work The artist's work is inspired by spiritual practices, intuitive imaginations and research on deep and transversal issues related to the rapid changes in our contemporary globalized societies, the artist asks for the urgency to safeguard the memory and intangible heritage of peoples. Synchronous with his meditation work, the painter operates a pictorial and aesthetic narrative transcribing on the canvas a missive of his memory between past, present and future and his diasporic imaginaries, threads of the work. The artist's mission invests a \ield of research that develops in the contemporary visual imagination in resonance with the rest of the world, with in the background the need for transmission, rede\inition of history and memory by taking care to make tangible an emancipated future carried by new perceptions. The whole issue of OUARDANE's creative eruption lies in his desire for a real emancipation from the models and mechanisms of contemporary societies and the need to open the \ields of representation in order to change perceptions from the root. What the work teaches us is the possibility of giving meaning, imagining an experience and seeking the cultural, urban, social and human progress of a segment of diasporic history that can help us to understand the present and re\lect on the future and contribute to transmitting a testimony of importance for future generations. Field of artistic research / approach and creative process: The artist diversi\ies forms, innovates techniques, symbolism: painting, material, collage; OUARDANE plays with plural plastics and declines textures between transparency and opacity. The material is an alchemy of composition inspired by nature and the terroir, mixing oil paint, natural pigments and a whole alloy of powders, sands, \lowers and bark from Morocco. A tireless traveler in the mapping of memory, the artist travels through an ancestral world in search of identity and transcribes his journey according to gesture and imagination. Each creation is a labyrinthine composition of his memory. He revisits the spaces suspended between forgetfulness and reminiscence, between re\lection and meditation, at the truce where sacred signs, roots, symbols, rhythms and myths intertwine. Lyrical abstraction, colors and landscapes from solar decomposition, bursting of forms, suspension, drawn from the light of its roots. The work is a singular study of the plural artistic heritage and an imprint that embodies a belt of his contemporary production. Abderrahmane OUARDANE's work revolves around a visual dialogue that re\lects the evolution, diversity and vitality of his creation, from genesis to contemporaneity. The \ield of representation of the work is inscribed through a central axis that is based on re\lection on identity in the speci\ic context of our contemporary societies. The artist offers his own experience to illustrate his personal history and inscribes it in the great History of the cultural effervescence of Modern and Contemporary Art. 4

"IFRI" Acrylic on Canvas Ifri is a deity, she symbolizes the sun goddess, protector of the source and the home. OUARDANE materializes his unspeakable emotion by the sketch of an altiè re woman. Dressed in her drapery, adorned with her prodigy turban, the goddess overlooks a universe landlocked sometimes of mist, sometimes of light. The goddess with the timeless body wanders through a sublime landscape where water and \ire, heaven and earth form a fertile alloy. For the painter, this Icon becomes a language, that of an essential energy that crosses the ages. Through the esoteric expression of the character, the painter reconnects with roots and sacralizes symbol. 10
11
«FEMME D'IMILCHIL» Acrylic on Canvas OUARDANE materializes his fascination for Imilchil's wife by sketching her \igure. The muse overlooks a dreamlike universe. Dressed in colorful drapery, adorned with her prodigy turban. 12

"TRIPLETS OF CASABLANCA" Acrylic on Canvas, Mixed Collage Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco, is a trendy urban metropolis considered to be the great North African Hub. An urban and trendy living environment that defines a "life style" fantasized by several young women from the countryside and remote mountains of the kingdom. But how can the traditional woman dream of herself as a modern woman without weaving a safety net between past, present and future? 14
15
"ORACLE" Acrylic on Canvas The Oracle of the Atlas Mountains, with divinatory clairvoyance, announces the prophecy of the degeneration of the world of men. She glimpses the anomaly: the destruction of the world caused by the materialism of men, threatens balance and harmony on Earth. 16
17
"SACRIFICE" Acrylic on Canvas Ancient indigenous peoples worshipped the moon and the sun, to whom they offered sacri\ices. These are ancestral beliefs and customs that were intended to ward off fate. Like a language between the human and the spirits. Today, some peoples remain attached to these deep-rooted traditions. The ancients still speak of the "ancient way of the ancestors" and still retain some ancestral rites today. 18
19
"TRACES OF AL-ANDALUS" Acrylic on Canvas Splendors and nostalgia of Al-Andalus. Al-Andalus, a region of Spain that was under the sovereignty of the Moors from the eighth to the \ifteenth. During these centuries of history, all the communities of the three confessions cohabited side by side and gave birth to a culture of coexistence, "the convivencia" which \inds one of its most beautiful expressions in literature in Arabic, Hebrew and Romance. In Al-Andalus, freedom of thought, freedom of expression, integrity and intellectual creativity are three essential characteristics of al-Andalus' original intellectual creation. Scientists were philosophers, mathematicians, doctors and practitioners, theologians, judges and politicians. A bygone era when society was highly developed compared to the rest of the world. 20
21
"CONTEMPORARY IMPERIALS" Acrylic on Canvas and Mixed Collage Women, between past, present and future. Today, the traditional woman has given way to a modern woman who tries to combine the fundamentals of her traditions with her modernity. Recently, women have begun to create their space of freedom in order to \ight for their hard-to-obtain rights within a traditionally patriarchal society. These contemporary imperials are gaining ground thanks to their struggle, they are gradually enjoying their rights and have strong hopes for the future. But is this acquired freedom valid for all the Women of the World? What about the real living conditions of the Woman, her wishes, her hopes, her projects? It is important to note that despite all the progress that has been made in the status of women, this development is still ambiguous, because to date not all women have yet taken possession of all their rights. Women must be masters of their destiny; no matter what their jails are, they have to steal the keys! 22
23
"FINAL BOARDING" Acrylic on Canvas and Mixed Collage Imilchil is a Berber village in northern Morocco where a mythical tradition is held every year: the Moussem d'Imilchil, an engagement festival. This traditional festival of love, initially reserved for the natives of the surrounding villages and peaks of the Atlas, now looks like a large folk fair. From now on this gathering is a victim of mass tourism and the "folklorization" of intangible heritage. The work "Final Boarding" illustrates the abridged sketch of an ancient muse, the traditional "Muse of Imilchil". In its contemporary version, The Authentic Amazon is reincarnated as a new age heroine. Yet, under her new esoteric features, she seems disoriented. In a hurry to modernize without a safety net of her orality, her identity, nor her legend. The muse took off with no return. From her genesis to her contemporaneity: final destination. 24
25
«BESTIAIRE RUPESTRE» Acrylic on Canvas and Mixed Collage The bestiary series evokes the early mastery of pictorial techniques and the creativity of the \igurations of the rock areas discovered in three distinct geographical and bioclimatic domains, that is to say the chains of the Atlas, the Pre Sahara and the Moroccan Atlantic Sahara. Despite research on rock art in Morocco, the Moroccan Atlantic Sahara and Mauritania, issues related to its classi\ication and its relationship to its cultural context are not identi\ied in an intact way. In the current state of knowledge, this area is characterized by the continuous succession, from north to south, of large rock areas, relayed by small stations. These areas have known many traditions of parietal art creation. This implies that some sites include engravings or paintings from a wide variety of periods. This fact is found in the superposition of drawings belonging to the different categories of rock art. The importance of this rock art as an archaeological and historical source is considerable. It contributes to the reconstruction of prehistoric history and its settlement. 26
27
"DROP OF FIRE ON BLUE WAVE" Acrylic on Canvas Over time, urbanization spreads, contributes to the degradation of nature and threatens all forms of life on earth. This work denounces the pollution of the Earth and oceans by humans, it particularly blames polluting industries that release tons of toxic products and waste into the environment, as well as the massive urbanization that replaces green spaces and makes our cities gray and ugly. The seasons are no longer distinguishable. We live in an overrated and arti\icial world. 28
29
«BAL MUSETTES» Acrylic on Canvas The contemporary world is damaged by materialism to the detriment of noble values related to the spirit. Yet it is these spiritual values that give true meaning to our existence. The sacred is at the heart of creation. Aesthetic experience \inds its true essence in both otherness and interiority. The work of art is a transcendent, incorruptible and universal piece. 30
31
"STARDUST" Acrylic on Canvas As recent research on the genealogy of the matter that makes up us, our living beings and the entire solar system shows, 97% of our billions of billions of atoms come from the cosmos. We are therefore made up of atoms forged through different cosmic events that have marked the 13.8 billion years of history of the universe. We are all made up of "stardust". We are all one. We are "ONE". 32

NEW INSPIRATION - Collection ÉPURE Summer2021. OUARDANE settles in his summer workshop "le buibui", a spartan and functional shed on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. After a few days of seaside relaxation, far from the megalopolis, afternoons of reading, research and concentration, inspiration \inally blossoms. The painter stimulates the canvas and ventures in search of genius, on the side of the meanders of his imagination. Ouardane gives his brushes and knives to an abstract art with chatty pictoriality. Paci\ication of forms, purity of matter, quest for spirit, search for essence. Signs and symbols in organic fusion are invited into the work. The light is in the shadows. A mystical breath permeates the work. The artist's experimental practice records his return to the spiritual sphere. 40
