A4D Healthcare Professional Advisory Group Profile of Members Amanda Epps – Diabetes Specialist Nurse, United Kingdom Amanda Epps has been a diabetes specialist nurse at Medway NHS foundation trust for the past 7 years, before she specialised in diabetes Amanda was a Senior sister of an acute medical ward at the same trust. Her current role covers specialist care of people with diabetes across primary, community and secondary care. Amanda is a non-medical prescriber and an advanced nurse practitioner; she is currently working towards an MSc in Diabetes at Kings College London. Amanda is the founder of the diabetes specialist nurse forum UK, an online support group for diabetes specialists which now has over 1700 members. The forum won the prestigious QIC healthcare professional of the year award in 2018 and were invited to meet the prime minister at downing their work improving diabetes car across the UK. Amanda has a personal interest in type 1 diabetes as her son was diagnosed aged 7 and recently she was also diagnosed late in life with the condition. Amanda is really looking forward to being able to help support the charity Action for Diabetes by providing education and peer support to those involved in the project. Dr Amphayvanh Manivong– Paediatrician, Laos Amphayvanh Manivong is a senior paediatrician at Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane Capital. Her current role covers paediatric care in the general ward of paediatric department and specialist care for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at the diabetes mellitus clinic that was established since 2016. She has great passion in providing continuous medical education to healthcare staff. She involves in the paediatric residency program at Mahosot Hospital, providing education and training for physicians who are interested in paediatric care. She is also a part time lecturer at the University of Health Sciences of Lao PDR that she focuses teaching on paediatric care. Besides this, Dr Amphayvanh is very active in organising T1D training workshops at provincial hospitals with the aim to increase awareness and diagnosis of this disease in Laos. Andrew Gerald Tan Hua Kiong – Pharmacist, Malaysia Andrew is a Senior Clinical Pharmacist in a public hospital in Sarawak, Malaysia, who holds a Master's Degree in Clinical Pharmacy. He is also a Diabetes Medication Therapy Adherence Clinic (DMTAC) pharmacist who is heavily involved in the care of patients with diabetes. He is proud to be part of a multidisciplinary team that believes in self-empowerment of patients and is constantly striving to enable patients to achieve a fulfilling life as a person with diabetes. In addition to clinical duties, Andrew is also actively involved in clinical research and the training of aspiring DMTAC pharmacists. Page 1/8
Anne Marie Frohock– Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian, United Kingdom Anne Marie Frohock BSc(Hons) PGDip RD is Lead Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian with the Oxfordshire Children’s Diabetes team. She has been working as a specialist diabetes dietitian since 2014 and is passionate about empowering all children and young people living with T1D to live life to their fullest potential. She has a special interest in sports nutrition and has established the Oxford Specialist Diabetes Sports Clinic. Organising an annual T1D Sports Day and (with the diabetes team in Oxford) residential activity weekends for youngsters with T1D she sees how valuable peer support is in living with T1D. Anne Marie has completed research and often speaks at meetings and conferences for healthcare professionals sharing knowledge and best practice in diabetes care. In 2019 she volunteered in Costa Rica providing education for diabetes healthcare teams and at a residential camp for 5 to 21 year olds with diabetes. Assoc Prof Dr Azriyanti Anuar Zaini– Paediatric Endocrinologist, Malaysia Assoc Professor Dr Azriyanti Anuar Zaini is an Associate Professor, Consultant Paediatrician, Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist and Senior Lecturer in Department of Paediatric, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Dr Azriyanti completed her training and fellowship in paediatric endocrine (Malaysia and Oxford) and became a full time consultant since 2015. Her passion is towards patient care and education as well as aiming to increase awareness on paediatric diabetes amongst health care professionals and the public in general. Bethany Kelly – Diabetes Specialist Nurse, United Kingdom Bethany Kelly currently works in Southampton, as a Community Diabetes Specialist Nurse. She has been involved with diabetes care for the last 10 years of her career. She has recently completed her MSc in Diabetes Practice with Swansea University. Bethany has had multiple pieces of work about diabetes care and awareness published. She has also been invited to speak at the Houses of Parliament about her local work with the FreeStyle Libre. Bethany became Co-Chair of the Diabetes Specialist Nursing Forum UK in 2018. As part of this team, she received the “Healthcare Professional of the Year 2018 award” at the Quality in Care Diabetes Awards. The team were also nominated for the Health Service Journal award for Diabetes Initiative of the Year in 2019. She joined the Forum for Injection Technique (FIT) board in 2018 and the team published the 5th Edition guidelines in 2020. Bethany has been involved in many International and national speaking and judging events. Bethany enjoys being a lecturer on various topics for the University of Southampton and the Solent University on various BSc and MSc programmes. Bethany recently founded “Team Diabetes 101” alongside Amanda Epps and Professor Partha Kar as a response to COVID19. This was an MDT group initiative which aimed to provide support and education to people living with diabetes during the pandemic. Bethany’s’ passions lay in young adult and transitional care for people living with Type 1 Diabetes. She also really enjoys pregnancy and technology. Page 2/8
Assoc Prof Dr Iv Malene– Paediatrician, Cambodia Dr Iv Malene has been working in Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital for 26 years. She is now a Senior Consultant Paediatrician heading up the diabetes clinic of the paediatric department and the Vice Director of Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital in Phnom Penh. She is also a professor of paediatrics at the University of Health and Sciences, Phnom Penh that she often being invited to speak at national and international congresses on Type 1 Diabetes management. Dr Iv Malene completed her training in paediatric diabetes under a Swiss program organised by Zurich University between 1996 – 1999. Her passion is driving high standard patient centric care for improved outcomes and quality of life in paediatric diabetes; as well as providing education for healthcare staff and medical students to drive excellence in paediatric care in Cambodia. Dr Khaysy Rassavong– Paediatrician, Laos Dr Khaysy Rassavong is a Senior Consultant Paediatrician, heading up the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Laos. He completed his training and fellowship in paediatrics in 2003 at the University of Health Sciences of Lao PDR. He has over 30 years of experience in managing critical conditions in children and neonates, providing medical treatment for those treated in PICU. Dr Khaysy was instrumental in the establishment of PICU in Mahosot Hospital and the development of policy for paediatric critical care. He was also involved in various PICU training for doctors and nurses in other provincial hospitals, improving access to critical care for children in Laos. Beside this, he has special interest in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) care that he attended training in Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand and set up the T1D care team in Mahosot Hospital. Lim Pei Kwee– Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Singapore Lim Pei Kwee is a Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Educator and currently working at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Singapore. She is actively involved in diabetes education as well as mentoring adolescents and young adults living with diabetes through support group activities. Prof Dr Lim Keuky – Physician, Cambodia Professor Lim Keuky has devoted his life to the promotion of diagnosis, treatment, and self-management for Cambodians living with diabetes. He founded the Cambodian Diabetes Association (CDA) to achieve these ends. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1961. From there, he went on to do doctoral work in pharmacodynamics at the Université de Paris V Descartes. In 1979, he received his Doctorate of Endocrinology from Paris VI University. Dr. Keuky’s extensive professional experience includes public service to Cambodia, having spent 1966 to 1975 in such positions as Information Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister in Cambodia. He also spent many years in Europe, working in quality control in the pharmaceutical industry, and consulting for the World Health Page 3/8 Organization (WHO).
Assoc Prof May Ng – Paediatric Endocrinologist, United Kingdom May Ng is an Honorary Associate Professor at University of Liverpool and holds a dual accreditation specialist qualification in General Paediatrics and Paediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes. She is based in Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust and is the Associate Medical Director. She completed her undergraduate degree under full scholarship in Sydney, Australia and undertook her paediatric training in Australia and in the United Kingdom. She was the recipient of the UK Medical Research Council Fellowship and after her MBBS (Hons) in Sydney University, she completed further training to obtain a Masters and PhD degree in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes in Liverpool. She has a Master of Laws degree and is active in medicolegal work. She also has an MBA in Healthcare and Finance. She has authored 2 books ‘A Journey With Brendan’ and ‘Me and My Hormones’, published over 150 research papers and presented at more than 100 scientific meetings. She is Editor-in-Chief for Diabetes Care for Children and Young People Journal, Chair of the UK Association of Children’s Diabetes Clinicians, Chair of UK National Institute Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) for Diabetes in Children and is the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Officer for Research. She is in the Diabetes UK Council for Healthcare Professionals, Online Learning Committee for European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) and E-learning Committee for International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). She is a clinical lead of multiple national award winning initiatives such as winner of the Northwest Excellence in Healthcare NHS Parliamentary Awards 2020, University of Liverpool Alumni Award 2019, Winner of 2015 Diabetes Quality in Care award and her research interest include Cochrane reviews, new diabetes technologies and research that benefits improving the psychological and emotional well-being of children and young people with diabetes. Prof Dr Muhammad Yazid Jalaludin – Paediatric Endocrinologist, Malaysia Professor Dr Muhammad Yazid Jalaludin is currently The Deputy Dean (Undergraduate Studies) at the Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, after serving as Head of the Department of Paediatrics (2016-2021). He works as a Senior Consultant Paediatrician and Senior Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and as a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya. He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), USA after obtaining his MBBS and Masters in Paediatrics, both from University Malaya. He is currently the Immediate Past President of the Asia Pacific Paediatric Endocrine Society (APPES 2020-2022) and the Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA 2019-2021). He is also a member of The Endocrine Society USA, International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) and Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS). Prof Jalaludin main research interest is in growth (nutrition), obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and vitamin D in children. He is one of the Principal Investigator (Clinical) for MyBFF@school, co-PI for MyHeARTs and co-investigator in Co-PoWR and DEWI projects. He holds many national and international research grants. He acts as Scientific Advisor for many multicentre international researches for type 2 diabetes in children. Assoc Prof Myint Nilar– Paediatrician, Myanmar To be updated Dr Lek Ngee– Paediatric Endocrinologist, Singapore Dr Lek Ngee is currently a Senior Consultant Paediatrician in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in Singapore. Dr Lek strives to be a competent and caring Paediatrician. He is a specialist doctor in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. He is deeply committed to providing the highest quality of clinical care for children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus and a wide range of endocrine conditions. In addition to providing clinical care, Dr Lek conducts clinical audits and research, and teaches Endocrine and Paediatric residents, medical students, and allied health professionals. Dr Lek has diverse clinical and research interests, including the pathogenesis, heterogeneity and natural history of various forms of diabetes mellitus; childhood obesity, growth and puberty; the spectrum and range of complexity in disorders of sex development; and the early-life programming and developmental origins of, and sex dimorphism in, health and disease. He aims to translate scientific advances and medical research findings into clinical practice to improve patient care. Assoc Prof Dr Prapai Dejkhamron – Paediatric Endocrinologist, Thailand Dr Prapai Dejkhamron is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. She completed my Endocrinology fellowship training programs from Chiang Mai University and University of Michigan. She is one of the principal investigators for the Thai Type 1 Diabetes and Diabetes Diagnosed Before Age 30 Years Registry, Care, and Network (T1DDAR CN) which is the collaborations among the Thai Society for Pediatric Endocrinology, the Endocrine Society of Thailand, the Diabetes Association of Thailand, Siriraj Diabetes Center (SiDM), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, the Northern Diabetes Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University; and, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) of Thailand. TIDDAR CN has been established with the objectives to (1) strengthen the clinical knowledge of medical professionals; (2) develop a referral system and network for DSMES program; (3) to create DSME teaching modules and education materials and, (4) initiate a cohort data of T1D patients of all ages, and of patients who were diagnosed with diabetes before 30 years of age. Dr. Prapai has also been appointed as a sub-board member of department of Pediatrics, Chiang Mai University Hospital and actively involved in raising fund to provide support for underprivileged patients with hormonal abnormalities and diabetes. Dr Rashdan Zaki – Paediatric Endocrinologist, Malaysia Dr Rashdan Zaki was born in Batu Pahat, Johor. He completed his secondary education in Sekolah Menenggah Sains Johor, Kluang and proceeded to complete his MBBS in University of Malaya. Thereafter, he completed his Masters in Paediatrics. Dr Rashdan begun his Clinical Fellowship Paediatric Endocrinology at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) in 2015 and thereafter in National University Hospital Singapore (NUHS) in 2019. Dr Rashdan has published numerous research papers particularly in the area of diagnosis of Growth Hormone deficiency in childhood as well as child obesity. Dr Rashdan plays an active role in social media platform as well, advocating and promoting child health and safety especially in the field of paediatric endocrinology. He’s currently an author of www.doktorbudak.com, an online avenue for parents to get information about child healthcare. Dr Rashdan’s articles have been featured in national dailies such as Harian Metro and he also has appeared as panel in various talk shows such as “Obesity di kalangan Kanak-Kanak” and “Disorder of sexual development” in Astro Awani. Dr Rashdan’s area of interest includes Metabolic Syndrome in Obese Children and Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Dr Rose Stewart– Consultant Clinical Psychologist, United Kingdom Dr Rose Stewart is a multi-award winning Consultant Clinical Psychologist working in North Wales. She is the acting Diabetes Psychology lead for Wales and the chair of the UK Diabetes Psychology Network. She also writes guided self-help books for people living with diabetes (the Talking Type 1 range), is a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion and member of the Council of Healthcare Professionals, and lectures and Swansea and Bangor universities. Dr Stewart uses a range of third-wave therapeutic approaches to work with high-risk client groups, and has particular interests in prevention of eating disorders, the roles of shame, compassion and empowerment for people with long-term conditions, and creating psychologically informed care systems. Soe Nyi Nyi – Nutritionist, Myanmar Soe Nyi Nyi is a committed nutritionist with more than thirteen years of experience in the area of public health nutrition and food security with International Non- Government Organizations and UN agencies in Myanmar. He is currently working with UN World Food Programme as a REACH National Facilitator coordinating the UN Nutrition network in Myanmar. He has been volunteering with A4D since 2017. Page 6/8
Prof Dr Supawadee Likitmaskul – Paediatric Endocrinologist, Thailand Clinical Professor Supawadee Likitmaskul, currently works as a consultant in pediatric endocrinologist Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University and also serves as a director of Siriraj Diabetes Center, Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok Thailand. After finished fellowship training from The Ray William Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes, The Children’s Hospital, Sydney in 1994, she became interested in growth disorders and diabetes in the young. After 1998, Professor Likitmaskul attended The First Asia-Pacific Diabetes Epidemiology training Course supported by WHO, US-NIH, JDF and KDA. She has developed an academic career in diabetes research that focuses on diabetes education, camp and epidemiology of diabetes in Type 1 Diabetes and Diabetes in youth. She also has served as a committee in Thai Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and The Diabetes Association of Thailand. Since 2016 , as a Chairman of Siriraj Diabetes Center, she and team have designed a new Siriraj Diabetes Center for patients & families education service, research and health professional education which officially opened in November 2018. She is now actively involved as a secretariat in a study of Thai-Type 1 Diabetes and Diabetes diagnosed Age before 30 years Registry, Care and Network (T1DDAR-CN) and diabetes self management program network system (DSMP NS) for Type1 Diabetes which started in 2011 and has fully established in 2014. Assoc Prof Emeritus Nguyen Thy Khue– Endocrinologist, Vietnam Professor Khue is head of the Endocrinology Division and an associate Professor Emeritus at the Department of Endocrinology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She is the Chair of the HCMC Diabetes and Endocrinology Association and Vice President of HCMC Medical Association; she is also the former President of The Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology (VADE). Professor Khue focused her studies mainly on the epidemiology study of diabetes in South Vietnam, diabetic nephropathy, lipid disorders in diabetes, hypoglycaemia in diabetes mellitus, diabetic keto-acidosis and thyroid disorders in pregnancy. Dr Vu Chi Dung – Paediatric Endocrinologist, Vietnam Dr Vu Chi Dung is the Head of Department of Medical Genetics, Metabolism and Endocrinology and Director of Center for Rare Disease and Newborn Screening, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital which is one of the best pediatric hospitals in Vietnam. He has extensive clinical experience in pediatric endocrinology, medical genetics and inherited metabolic disease. He trained at the Hospital Pediatrics of St. Antony, Catholic University of Lille, France and worked as research fellow at the Department of Pediatrics, Saint Louis University, USA and as a fellow at Royal children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. He has received several awards including the Pfizer Overseas Fellowship, Asian Investigator Award in Japan, ICIEM award in USA and Award for Excellent Study in Korea. Prof Dr Wannee Nitiyanant – Endocrinologist, Thailand Professor Wannee Nitiyanat is a Consultant Adult Endocrinologist with over 50 years of experience in clinical, research and academics related to diabetes care. She graduated from Mahidol University, Bangkok and had her post-graduate training in the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta and Presbyterian University Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the USA. She has great passion for research in diabetes mellitus, lipid disorders and obesity. She is the co-founder of Siriraj Diabetes Camp for Type 1 Diabetes, established since 1990. Over the years, Siriraj Diabetes Camp has evolved as “Integrated 3 in 1 Siriraj Diabetes School Camp" promoting diabetes education and self-management for healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes. She won won numerous awards including the Best Research Award of Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital (1994) and Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Diabetes Federation (2017). Currently she is appointed as Senior Consultant for Siriraj Diabetes Center and the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. She plays fundamental role in the development of T1DDAR CN and serves as a president of T1DDAR CNC (Thai-type 1 Diabetes and Diabetes Aged before 30 years Registry Care and Network Committee). Dr Yeow Toh Peng– Endocrinologist, Malaysia Dr Yeow is a consultant endocrinologist in Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre, Penang. She has been treating diabetes and other disorders of the endocrine system for over 20 years. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. She joined a summer camp for children with diabetes as a junior trainee and witnessed the challenge of living with diabetes and the effect of positive empowerment. Her passion for diabetes care grew from there. She completed her specialist training in Diabetes & Endocrinology in the UK and was a consultant endocrinologist in Dublin before returning to Malaysia in 2008. She was involved in international postgraduate diabetes education with the educational department of Steno Diabetes Centre Denmark from 2013-2015. She was an Associate Professor with RCSI & UCD Malaysian Campus (RUMC) from 2012 – 2020 and is currently in full-time clinical practice. Having worked in different countries with different resources and culture, she is deeply aware of the challenges of diabetes management in other settings.
