Schneider Nursery helps seed the gardens of Jackson County STORY BY BARNEY QUICK PHOTOS BY CARLA CLARK » Since 1949, Schneider Nursery has amply demonstrated the traits required for success in its type of business: a sense of stewardship over the majestic rolling land on which it put down roots, loyalty within a family, a strong faith that binds that family together, and a commitment to staying abreast of industry trends. A trip there leaves people feeling as if they have visited an oasis of good cheer in an uncertain world. When visitors turn off U.S. 50 and wind their way up the drive, the first thing they see is the stately brick home, which is now a guest house. It started out as a small, white cottage where George and Mae Ellen Schneider raised Jeff, Grant, Annie and Margie. The view in any direction into the valley below is a panorama of plots of neatly lined trees of a seemingly infinite number of varieties. side of the house takes one to the garden center. More plots are off to the west. If one wanders through them, a lagoon stretches through a meadow, imparting a serenity to the environment. There’s even a gazebo where customers can take a contemplative break from shop- ping. The family came from Penn- sylvania two generations ago. George’s father had a produce and dairy farm, and his mother had a chicken hatchery. As a youth, George used some of their ground to grow trees and shrubs. In 1949, after marrying Mae tree or shrub. The wholesale side of the operation has particular challenges. “It’s very important to determine what can be sold per year,” says Strange, “as well as what should be introduced to the field.” A parasite or fungus has to be detected early. Strange recalls a visit some years ago from an Indiana De- partment of Natural Resources official who beckoned her and Grant into an office for a private conversation. He warned that ash trees would be taken off the market within three to four years due to encroachment of the em- erald ash borer, a beetle native to Asia. Blue spruce is susceptible to a fungus that has to be monitored. Dogwoods had to be quarantined for a while.
