For the townwide o!ices of Select Board, School Committee, Assessor, Town Clerk, and Housing Authority, biographies of each candidate and their responses to a question posed by the League of Women Voters are included. Neither the League of Women Voters nor Envision Arlington endorses candidates. However, in an e!ort to help voters make informed decisions, we provided candidates with the opportunity to submit statements. If a candidate is not listed here, it simply means they did not submit a statement. The statements are posted in ballot order and have not been fact checked. All seats are three-year seats unless otherwise indicated. An asterisk indicates that the candidate is an incumbent. Candidates responded to the following prompt: Please use your personal statement to introduce yourself to voters in your precinct and explain why you want to serve on Town Meeting (TM). Suggested topics include your connection(s) to Arlington, your experience relevant to service in local government (including prior service on TM), issues in town (especially those likely to be addressed in the TM Warrant) that are important to you, and/or anything else that you feel will help you connect with voters. Steve also serves on the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Zoning Bylaw Working Group, and the Information Technology Advisory Committee. In the past, he's been a member of the Surveillance Study Committee, Homelessness Task Force, and Zoning Recodification Working Group. A staunch advocate for
government transparency, Steve has published over four years of public meeting notes on his website https://www.srevilak.net/wiki/Public_Meetings. He's committed to seeing Arlington do its part to address the regional housing shortage in Metro Boston, and to revisiting housing policies that have produced disparate impacts and a widening wealth gap. Greg Dennis* gdennis@alum.mit.edu, 617-863-0746 I live on Wheaton Rd near the Thompson School with my wife and three kids, one a student at Gibbs, one at Thompson, and the youngest in preschool. I'm happy to have served as a Town Meeting Member for Precinct 1 for the past six years and would be grateful to be elected to another 3-year term. In my six years on Town Meeting I've been a consistent supporter of public school funding, environmental stewardship, election modernization, and diversity and inclusion. In 2016 and again in 2019, I was a leader in the Town Meeting e!orts and public campaigns to fund public school construction to address our growing student enrollment. In 2017, I helped lead the successful e!ort to enact a plastic bag ban in Arlington. That same year, I was happy to vote for the resolution declaring Arlington a Trust Act town and for the establishment of a Pride/LGBTQIA+ Rainbow Commission. In 2019, I was appointed to the Election Modernization Committee, of which I was then elected the Clerk. I used my position on the committee to advance the consolidation of Town Meeting Member elections, which was passed by Town Meeting last year, and the adoption of Ranked Choice Voting, to appear before Town Meeting this year. On April 10th, I would appreciate one of your four votes, so I can continue to promote these issues and values at Town Meeting. PRECINCT 2 Maxwell Palmer maxwellpalmer@gmail.com I am running for Town Meeting to help build a more inclusive and equitable Arlington. I am a professor of political science at Boston University, where I focus on voting rights, representation, and the challenges facing cities in the United States. My family and I moved to East Arlington four years ago, and we love being a part of this community. I have two sons, ages 3 and 5, and I am excited for my older son to start kindergarten at Hardy in September. I currently serve on the town's Election Modernization Committee, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to help improve our elections and encourage voting and participation. As a Town Meeting Member, I look forward to working on housing, transit, and environmental issues, and promoting smart, inclusive, and green development. PRECINCT 3

Adam adam.auster.arlington@gmail.com Amos Meeks amoswmeeks@gmail.com I'm passionate about helping Arlington be a better Town for everyone. For the past three years I've volunteered as the co-chair of Sustainable Arlington, and through that have been involved in a number of sustainability-related campaigns, most recently passing a home rule petition to prohibit fossil fuels in new construction, which was passed by Town Meeting in the fall with 92% of TMMs voting in favor. As a Town Meeting Member I am excited to have the opportunity to put my time and expertise as a scientist towards addressing wider issues in Town with the goal of creating a more just, sustainable, and democratic community. I love to talk about any Town-related issues and to really dig into the details of an issue, so if you live in precinct 3 and have any thoughts or questions please don't hesitate to email me at amoswmeeks@gmail.com.
Lenard Diggins* ldiggins@gmail.com Though I'm a member of the Select Board, I still value my role as a Town Meeting Member the most. It is as a TMM that I continue to work with other TMMs to support them in their e!orts to host Precinct Meetings. One of my primary goals remains connecting TMMs even more with each other and the residents that they represent so as to make our community more informed and involved regarding the issues that face us locally and regionally. My other goal is to focus more intensely on making our community more sustainable and resilient. Sustainability and resiliency should have a bearing in just about every decision we make. Enhancing diversity, equity, integration, tolerance, and education helps us create a more sustainable and resilient community. As a TMM, I aim to continue working to make it easier for more residents to get involved with their local government. I want to work to get TMMs more engaged with policymaking before articles are submitted to the warrant. Indeed, I want to help residents and other TMMs realize that there are many ways to voice concerns and propose solutions; and when those ways don't function as they should, I want to work on fixing that. This is all to say that I remain very enthusiastic about being a TMM. During my first term, I've learned so much about the town, and I want to use that knowledge to better benefit our precinct and our town. I feel as if I'm just getting into gear, and I would very much appreciate your vote for another term! PRECINCT 4 Ezra Fischer ezrafischer.com Hi, I'm Ezra Fischer and I'm running for Town Meeting in Precinct Four. If elected, I will: -- Advocate for our diverse and densely populated precinct -- Push Arlington toward racial, economic, and environmental justice -- Be transparent with my views and listen to those of my neighbors. To learn more, please visit my website: ezrafischer.com Judith Garber JgarberTMM4@gmail.com OR www.JudithForTownMeeting.com Hello! My name is Judith Garber (she/her) and I am very excited to run for Town Meeting to represent Precinct 4. I have been a resident of East Arlington for 3 years with my partner Eric, and in the Boston area for 10 years. During the day, I work at a healthcare nonprofit and play competitive ultimate frisbee. I've always been interested in public service and social justice, and have volunteered in several local
campaigns, including Will Mbah's campaign for Somerville City Council and the Yes on 3 campaign to protect transgender residents from discrimination. Last summer I felt compelled to join in the evening vigils for Black Lives Matter and since then, I have been committed to working with my neighbors on local issues such as diversity & inclusion, a!ordable housing, and more. Now I'm eager to get more involved in local government, and I would be honored to represent you at town meeting. Exploring Arlington in the pandemic made me realize that I want to help make this beautiful town more accessible for people of all income levels and walks of life. As Town Meeting member, I will: Advocate for policies to make Arlington as welcoming and inclusive as possible, with a focus on a!ordable housing and racial justice; commit to being a responsive and open- minded representative; and serve as a resource for information on town gov events and policies. I also support Kelda Fontenot for AHA Board, Guillermo Hamlin for Assessor, and Ezra Fischer for Precinct 4 Town Meeting! PRECINCT 5 Lauren Ledger* lauren.ledger@gmail.com My name is Lauren Ledger and I am running for re-election as a Precinct 5 Town Meeting Member. This summer will mark my 13th year as an Arlington resident and every day, I am grateful to live in this Town. In 2014, I co-founded the original Arlington EATS school-based program and remain on the EATS Board. In Arlington, 4,530 residents are food insecure, a 30 percent increase in just three years. Knowing how many of our neighbors are struggling frames many of my Town Meeting decisions. I am also the parent of a 5th grader at Thompson and an 8th grader at Ottoson. I worked on both of the Build Arlington's Future campaigns and believe that making investments in our schools is the right thing to do and provides the town with a positive return on investment. I look forward to continuing to work as a Town Meeting Member on behalf of all residents in Arlington. Sarah Huber sarah.huber8@gmail.com My family and I have lived in Arlington for the past 20 years. I have 2 children who went through the Arlington Public School system. I myself now work at APS as an elementary science coach. I am an active member of Calvary Church in Arlington. I served as a town meeting member previously starting in 2015. I place value on education, the climate, housing justice and transportation. I appreciate your support. If I am elected I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the current TM Warrant. Thank you! Brian McMurray Brian McMurray (he/him) has lived in Arlington for nearly 4 years and the greater Boston area for 12
years. He was appointed to the Town Meeting in 2020 for Precinct 5. Brian loves his diverse, multi- generational neighborhood and wants to see Arlington be a charming, accessible and welcoming community for people of many backgrounds, professions, and perspectives. His partner, Abigail, is an artist and sole proprietor of a handmade small business and it's not uncommon to find Brian supporting her at weekend art fairs (pre-pandemic, at least). Brian works as an engineering manager for an ecommerce company in Boston and is an active community member with Reservoir Church in North Cambridge. PRECINCT 6 Adam MacNeill adamjamesmacneill@gmail.com Hello, My name is Adam MacNeill, and I am running for town meeting member from precinct 6. I was a town meeting member representing precinct 4 from 2018-2020, until I moved to 12 Wellington St., Unit 3 (in precinct 6). As a town meeting member, I focused on sustainable transportation, including authoring a successful warrant article to remove the inconsistently enforced curfew from the Minuteman Bikeway; local governmental accessibility, including helping organize precinct meetings across town; and housing a!ordability and supply (being one of very few renters in town meeting until my move). I strongly support racial justice and environmental concerns, including helping pass articles in our most recent town meeting that created a committee to study a citizens' police review board and set additional energy standards for new construction. I am also the co-chair of A!irmative Action and Outreach for the Arlington Democratic Town Committee, an executive member of the Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee, a member of Mothers Out Front Arlington, a member of the First Parish UU's Climate Action Working Group and Emerging Issues Group, and endorsed by Arlington Fights Racism. At my day job, I work on the advanced process analytics team in Analytical Development for a rare diseases drug development company, and I bring that same energy of responsible innovation to everything that I do. Thank you, Adam MacNeill adamjamesmacneill@gmail.com 12 Wellington St., Unit 3 Arlington, MA 02476 Anna Henkin Email: anna@henkin.me and website at https://tinyurl.com/Anna4TownMtgPct6 I've been a Precinct 6 resident for over six years while pursuing my PhD in Biochemistry. Alongside my dissertation research, I helped lead a successful unionization campaign and contract negotiation for graduate workers at my university. My academic and activist work has given me valuable experience in
research, organizing, multidisciplinary communication, and evidence-based decision making. Over the last year, I have found a new sense of belonging in this community working with the Black Lives Matter movement in my neighborhood. I've jumped at the chance to engage with the governance of this town via participation at public hearings. Arlington should be a town for all of us, and I am dedicated to building an Arlington that doesn't leave anyone behind. My priorities as a Town Meeting Member include disability rights, environmental sustainability, racial justice, housing a!ordability, and government transparency. I intend to continue my current work on and support of warrant articles that promote increased a!ordable housing, invest in our town's tree canopy, and improve government communication. I am dedicated to growing with this town and pushing for Arlington to be its best self. Learn more about me and my values at: https://tinyurl.com/Anna4TownMtgPct6 or meet me Thurs 4/8 7:30 at tinyurl.com/AFRelections Lesley Waxman* lwaxman@gmail.com My name is Lesley and I'm running for a third term representing Precinct 6 in Town Meeting. I moved to Massachusetts in 2006 to attend law school at BU, and eight years ago I moved to Arlington with my husband, Dan. In addition to my six years in Town Meeting, I serve in local government every day as the Assistant Director of the Cambridge Election Commission, ensuring that elections are run fairly and that every voter has a voice in government. Federal elections may get a lot of attention, but, as we saw last November, access to the polls is o"en a local matter. Drawing on my professional experience, I serve on Arlington's Election Modernization Committee, where we study ways to increase public engagement in the local election process, including ranked-choice voting, expanding voter eligibility, and evaluating polling place accessibility. In both my professional and volunteer roles, I engage in the issue that matters most to me - promoting civic participation. As a Town Meeting member, I also hope to make a di!erence on behalf of renters and families who seek a!ordable housing, equal access to services, and environmentally sustainable policies. I hope to ensure that people of all backgrounds can discover in our town the same sense of community and belonging that I have found here. I believe I can continue to be an advocate for a better Arlington, and I hope you will support me in the coming election. Feel free to email me any time at lwaxman@gmail.com. Charles Blandy* http://charlesblandy.com/tm tm@charlesblandy.com I became a member of Arlington Town Meeting in 2020, taking over the last year of a vacated seat. I'm now asking for your vote for a full three-year term. I am a classical singer and voice teacher, and have taught voice at Tu"s University since 2005 and Harvard University's Holden Voice Program since 2002. I have degrees from Oberlin College and Indiana University. I'm switching careers to fight the climate crisis full-time; and I'm now in a mid-career Masters program at Tu"s University's Urban and Environmental Policy program, with a wonderful cohort and faculty.
I'm an Arlington school parent. My kids, Madeleine (15) and Nicholas (12) are Bishop School grads, currently at AHS and Ottoson respectively, and dealing with the COVID era of education with great resilience and grace. My wife Janet works for the federal government. Around town under normal circumstances, you can find us at Madeleine's orchestra concerts or Nicholas's baseball games (go 'Stros!). Since 2004 I've been the co-editor of Blue Mass. Group, the leading progressive political blog in Massachusetts, writing about issues such as transit, environment, policing reform, and a special focus on climate change. I was inspired to run for Town Meeting mostly to support housing a!ordability and sustainable transit, particularly bicycling. PRECINCT 7 Marc Lefebvre Hello! My name is Marc Lefebvre. I've been living in Arlington for almost 10 years. My background is in engineering, and for the last 15 years, I've been employed as a science and technology teacher in a nearby district. I have three children in the schools; one at Thompson, one at Gibbs, one at Ottoson, and my family loves living in this town. My father was a long time town meeting and zoning board member in the small town in western Mass. that I'm from. If elected, this will be my first foray into town governance, and I'm hopeful you'll elect me to serve. I enjoy participating in collaborative problem-solving processes, and I believe that working through tensions and competing interests benefit the outcomes, even at the cost of what can be sometimes frustratingly slow progress. I also believe that every issue facing our town deserves to be looked at through an equitable lens. When we discuss climate initiatives, we should understand that traditionally oppressed populations are also asked to breathe the most polluted air. When we talk about transportation, we should understand that our most vulnerable need reliable access to transit to maintain employment, and when we talk about how we use space in town, we should understand that we have an obligation to provide equitably a!ordable access to this community. I look forward to serving my precinct and the Town of Arlington as a town meeting member and am hopeful that you'll vote for me on April 10. Elizabeth (Betsy) Carlton-Gysan I am running for town meeting because I believe strongly in our community and an Arlington that's welcoming and accessible to all. My spouse and I moved here in 2013 and have two children attending Thompson School. We're enmeshed in the schools, our church, and neighborhood, and I want to give as much as I'm receiving.
Current questions around housing and business zoning, sustainability, and transportation will dominate upcoming Town Meetings and I will represent Precinct 7's needs. Arlington's community is changing as housing prices soar. The town needs to address its growing inaccessibility for renters and homeowners with smart zoning choices that ensure people of diverse ages, economic levels, ability, and stage in life can live here. We also need to incent business development to maintain a strong tax base. While serving on the Human Rights Commission, I learned of the systemic inequities in our town structures. As a Town Meeting member, I am committed to addressing inequity and bias in schools, policing, housing, and other systems to move toward a more just, accessible, and diverse community. Sustainability needs to be central to zoning, energy, and transportation policies. Transportation choices impact our climate footprint and residents' quality of life. I believe in walkability, public transit, and testing new ideas that make residents less dependent on cars. I hope you will vote for me to represent Precinct 7 in Arlington's Town Meeting. Thank you. Larry Slotnick* ljslotnick@yahoo.com or 617-596-8617 (Text) Having already served one 3-year term as a Pct 7 Town Meeting member, I was a strong supporter of funding the rebuild of Arlington High School and worked to secure the necessary votes in the special election that was necessary to provide that funding. I also recognize that housing a!ordability is an important issue to address in order to maintain and, perhaps, increase the diversity of our Town. I am therefore in favor of creative solutions that will require changes to zoning, and such changes do make some long-time residents uncomfortable. But we have to be forward-thinking. On development, I support initiatives that re-think how our major avenues look and feel and how many o!-street parking spaces a developer must provide. I do not support the rampant conversion of apartments in two-family houses in East Arlington into luxury million+-dollar condos. That works against diversity in our community. Not to mention that , o"en, these re-worked buildings do not fit in well with neighboring housing stock nor maintain any true green space. I am a strong advocate for sustainable living, and for practices that any household can put into place at no cost. These are things like thoughtful recycling, diverting your food scraps to compost, visiting the monthly Recycle Center, requesting a free energy audit from MassSave (owner or renter,) driving less and walking and biking more, and spending your dollars as locally as possible. I encourage volunteerism in town government (I co-chair the Zero Waste Arlington committee) and in local non-profit organizations such as Food Link, where I've been a long-time volunteer. I'm a 12+ year resident of East Arlington, and hope to continue serving my precinct and the Town as a Town Meeting member. PRECINCT 8 Patricia Worden, M.A, Ph.D.* pbworden@gmail.com 781-646-8303
Patricia Worden, M.A, Ph.D. Town Meeting, Precinct 8 Voters in my precinct have enabled me to serve for many years in Town Meeting. I am very grateful for that. Although I have served in many other committees and commissions I have always considered Town Meeting membership to be the most important. Without transparent Town Meeting, many e!orts of these groups would be futile. Particularly important are regulatory enforcement issues and several proposed zoning changes which are listed in the Town Meeting Warrant online on the Town website. Organizations in which I have served include: - Arlington School Committee - establishment of METCO program, commitment to keeping class sizes in early grades small, and highest quality and diverse academics, science and technology, sports, music, art, history including black history and enrichment programs - Arlington Housing Authority; - Charter member, Human Rights Commission; - A!ordable Housing Task Force (brought Arlington's Inclusionary A!ordable Housing Zoning Bylaw); - Arlington Permanent Building Committee when expanding Robbins Library; - Arlington Long-range Planning Committee; - Housing Plan Implementation Committee; - Preservation /reuse of buildings for use as a!ordable housing and community - e.g. Central, Gibbs, Parmenter. Contribution to Arlington's zoning protections and increase in a!ordable and senior housing, sustainability, climate, trees, environment and safety for all. These experiences have given me awareness and perspective that I hope to continue using as Town Meeting Member. Rebecca Gruber rebeccagruber215@gmail.com My husband and I have lived on Pleasant Street for almost thirty years when as newlyweds we bought our first and only home. Our son, now a sophomore in college, is a born and bred Arlingtonian. Currently I am the librarian for a charter school network with schools in East Boston and Chelsea. Before career changing, I worked in systems consulting, and have both an M.B.A. and a Masters in Teaching. Over the past year, I've taken a deep interest in our Town government. I attend multiple committee meetings a week. I am co-chair of the Envision Arlington Diversity Task Group and a member of two subcommittees of the Arlington Human Rights Commission. I regularly attend Select Board, Redevelopment Board, and Housing Authority meetings. Town Meeting votes on warrant articles that encompass almost every aspect of Town governance. The issues are complex with potentially multiple impacted constituencies; a superficial understanding may overlook an unintended consequence. As a Town Meeting Member, I promise to continue to grow my understanding of how our town works, and will do due diligence, listening to as many voices as possible to ensure my deepest understanding of the impact of each of my Town Meeting votes. I have two priorities: One is for Arlington to be a community in which everyone feels welcome and
included, and two, that information and communication about Arlington's Town Government is easily accessible by all. You can find more about me at: tinyurl.com/RebeccaGruberP8 John Leone 781-641-3546, Jdleone@gmail.com The responsibility of a Town Meeting Member is to attend Town Meetings, be well informed participate in the debate and vote in the best interest of the Town on ALL issues that a!ect the Town and are within Town Meeting's purview. I believe that I am qualified to be an e!ective Town Meeting Member. I pride myself on my honesty, directness and fairness. I have been in Town Meeting as member and /or the Moderator since 1994, attending every meeting, with the exception of the 2007 meetings. I am currently the Town Moderator. As a Meeting Member, I have studied our Bylaws, Zoning Bylaws and Budgets for 27 years. I have served the Town in many volunteer positions including: the Zoning Bylaw Review Committee, serving as its Chair for three years; the Millennium Time Capsule Committee; the Town Meeting Rules and Procedures Committee; The Government Reorganization Committee; the Board of Directors of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors and Past President of the Touchdown Club of Arlington. I am also currently serving as the President of Arlington Community Media Inc., and for the past 20 years have served on its Board of Directors. The combination of my Town Meeting experience, volunteerism, legal practice in Arlington, being well practiced in Town Meeting rules of order and my deep understanding of the way our Town government works and functions, makes me the right choice for a Precinct 8 Town Meeting Member. I ask to be your choice for Precinct 8 Town Meeting Member. If you would like to discuss the Town Meeting Member's O!ice please feel free to call me, 781-641-3546 or email, JDLeone@gmail.com . Please, I ask for your support and vote on April 10, 2021, number 5 on the ballot. John D. Leone Josh Lobel* josh.lobel@gmail.com Why I'm running for Town Meeting: I've been a member of Town Meeting for over 15 years. I find it to be one of the purest expressions of democracy, somewhat like serving on a big jury. Town Meeting plays a critical role in the management of our Town - approving budgets, zoning changes and bylaws that move policy forward. We have a lot of power. I take that seriously. Like being on a jury, I appreciate the give and take of ideas - and being persuaded of a position that I might not have initially held. I love the process, and I mostly appreciate the
outcomes. Participation In addition to my consistent attendance and prep for Town Meeting, I have also been very involved in planning our regular 8/10 neighborhood meetings. I'm proud that these events have had high attendance, and that we've held them consistently. I'm excited about our recent e!orts to ramp them up and the potential that this will have for increasing communication, involvement, and community building. Views Though I didn't realize it when I moved to Arlington in my 20's, I'm so proud to live in such an energetic, caring and involved town. My views would be considered progressive - I'm passionately concerned about climate change, racial and economic justice, diversity, healthcare and housing. I think Arlington's well run and represents the community's attitudes, but also know that there is room for positive change. I'm happy to promote good ideas. I'd love to hear from you: josh.lobel@gmail.com 401-965-9446 John Presti john.presti@gmail.com Our family planted its roots in Arlington 4+ years ago. We were attracted to Arlington because of its schools, the commitment to improving them, a quaint and walkable downtown, a base of friends, and its proximity to Boston. As a multi-racial family, we were impressed by Arlington's commitment to improving diversity which stood out in comparison to its peers. Through involvement in our son's nursery school and meeting our neighbors, our base of friends has only grown. Just 6 months old when we moved here, our son is now starting kindergarten in Sept. A"er earning a law degree, I have spent over 20 years in business, focused primarily on energy and finance. I now work at a clean energy firm, helping coastal states from New England to the MidAtlantic meet their renewable goals with cutting edge technology. If elected, this will be my first experience working in local government. I am confident that my commitment, enthusiasm and skills will provide a fresh perspective to the issues facing our residents. As a parent, member of the community, property owner, and someone who has committed his future to a life in Arlington, I want to make a contribution to the town. The issues I feel I can best contribute to are 1) the quality of our schools, 2) supporting our local businesses, 3) a commitment to diversity, and 4) clean energy and environment. I look forward to the privilege of representing our neighbors at Town Meeting. PRECINCT 9 Paul Schlichtman*
paul@schlichtman.org - 617-755-4300 - www.schlichtman.org I'm Paul Schlichtman, and I respectfully ask for one of your four votes for Town Meeting in Precinct 9. In addition to being a member of the Arlington School Committee, I have served as an Arlington Town Meeting member for 25 years. I have a long string of perfect attendance at Town Meeting, and I pride myself as being an innovative member of our town's citizen legislature. When I first joined Town Meeting in 1993, Arlington's election was held on the first Saturday in March. I worked for two years to convince Town Meeting to move the election to April, where voters enjoyed better weather and more sunlight. (Article 12, 1994 Annual Town Meeting) Over the past few years, I have been working on strengthening our Dark Skies bylaw, addressing issues of glare and light trespass. My current priorities include working with Jo Anne Preston and the Transportation Advisory Committee to resolve pedestrian safety issues on Chestnut Street, and reimagining the MBTA Route 80 bus service to provide frequent service between the new Green Line Extension and Arlington. For information about my plan for improved bus service, visit www.better80.com. I maintain a social media presence to facilitate communication with friends and neighbors. Look for me on Facebook and Twitter (@schlichtman). I can also be reached on email at paul@schlichtman.org, and my cell phone number is 617-755-4300. Please honor me with one of your four votes on Saturday, April 10. Phedjina Jean Phedjinajean4@gmail.com Phedjina Jean I moved to Arlington from Haiti at the age of six. I'm a recent graduate of Arlington High School where I co-founded the AHS Black Student Union and served as both the class Vice President and the exchange student coordinator. I'm currently in my sophomore year at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with a pre-med focus. I plan to attend medical school to become a physician scientist. I currently work as a private caregiver and a research assistant at the Havard/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. However, it is my work as a local activist that draws me to seek election to Town Meeting. I am motivated to advocate for policies that address racial justice, representation, and housing a!ordability. I'm a very open minded and dedicated person, ready to listen to everyone and committed to holding Precinct meetings to learn what our neighbors most care about. I'm also dedicated to serving in a liaison role to the youth in Arlington. I look forward to my election, as well as the election of the other candidates of color this year, to contribute toward making sure the demographics of our Town governance more closely align with our community. Please support me in continuing to make change by giving me one of your four votes on April 10th! JLSmason@gmail.com I have been an Arlington resident since Spring 2010, and my husband and I are now raising our two Thompson-attending children here. A teacher by training (with degrees in World Religions and Education), I have been lucky to teach in our town's schools as well as neighboring Belmont's Audubon Habitat Sanctuary. The combination of this professional background with raising my own children who have been part of APS's Special Education System, leaves me feeling particularly strongly about striving for diverse, equitable and inclusive (DEI) learning spaces for the betterment of all our students and residents. The immediacy of prioritizing an environmental focus in our town's projects and agendas is equally important to me. I am inspired by, and striving towards, Maya Angelou's famous quote: "I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." For me so far, this has included: attending townwide committee meetings; educating myself on racism so I can strive towards antiracim for myself, my family and my communities; volunteering for the Book Rack and the Thompson Diversity & Inclusion Group (DIG); standing in solidarity with others for social justice. I hope to be able to add "being an active Town Meeting Member" to this list, to more actively help in upli"ing historically marginalized voices, reckoning with the increasingly exclusive housing market, and protecting our natural landscapes. I believe in our town's ability to take care of each other, and the power we have when working together for positive change. Brian Hasbrouck* brnarlington@gmail.com I'm Brian Hasbrouck and I'm running for re-election as a Town Meeting representative from the 9th precinct. Since moving to Arlington 37 years ago, I have supported all debt exclusions to rebuild or build new elementary schools, Ottoson and Gibbs. I supported the AHS Building Committee's plan and resulting high school rebuild debt exclusion last year. I have always supported Prop 2 1/2 overrides that go to police, fire, public works and core responsibilities. If re-elected, I expect to support financial preferences of the Select Board and major budget committees. However, I will also keep an open mind on some of the elective initiatives (zoning for example) where there may be important diverging views to be heard. I can be reached at brnarlington@gmail.com. Jo Anne Preston* ja-preston@comcast.net 781-743-5431 I am Jo Anne Preston and ask for your vote for re-election to Town Meeting. At Town Meeting I have supported articles to strengthen schools, to ensure responsible redevelopment while building a!ordable housing, to preserve the tree canopy, and to respect and protect our black and brown residents. Outside of town meeting, I have initiated pedestrian safety plans for Chestnut Street which will be realized this year. A"er one of our senior residents was killed crossing Chestnut Street in the crosswalk, I met with the police chief, wrote a grant to study the area, appeared before the Select Board and Tra!ic Advisory Committee. There I was joined by Paul Schlichtman, who furnished very important testimony. In the next two weeks there will be community meeting to discuss the TAC plan for narrowing the street at the cross walk and future plans to made the side ramps safer.
Last year I was elected to the Board of the Arlington Housing Authority. Three of the five AHA building sites are located within precinct 9. My first accomplishment was to open up the AHA Board meetings to the community by placing meeting announcements on the Town website. Working with the AHA residents we are improving the pest management plan. I have also arranged with the Tree Committee for additional trees to shade the benches at Chestnut Manor. I ask for your vote on April 10 to continue to serve the residents of Precinct 9. PRECINCT 10 Mustafa Varoglu* mvaroglu+TMM10@gmail.com As a Town Meeting Member running for my fourth term, I want to maintain and strengthen the qualities that drew our family to Arlington in 2005. We have found Arlington to be a community of close-knit neighbors and neighborhoods with a pedestrian friendly design that promotes people running into each other and keeping in touch. Due to the layout and character of the town, we met many friends during the years walking (our now high school age kids) to Brackett. I enjoy advocating for policies and bylaws that help promote social interactions at the personal level and allow people to have equal access and opportunity to the amenities of the town including the parks, our schools, and business districts. I believe people of all abilities should be able to access the town without the need for a car. Arlington is facing growing density, due to its popularity, and we must guide that development to keep Arlington's close-knit character. Based on my past experiences before moving to Arlington, I have seen how careful planning to integrate housing and businesses can help build vibrant neighborhoods, and I hope to share these views with Town Meeting. You can reach me at mvaroglu+TMM10@gmail.com or by phone: (6_1_7)-852-4804. Barbara Costa* barbaracosta331@gmail.com I have been a Town Meeting Member for close to 20 years, and through this close lens on Town government, I have grown to appreciate its role in the quality and experience of our daily lives. It's important to me that Arlington is a town that welcomes and appreciates a diversity of people, with a goal of making it more possible for those with less means to live here as well. So I support all e!orts toward increasing a!ordable housing stock. By quality of life I mean not only a transparent municipal budget and good management (both of which we have in Town) and good education and basic services, but also an awareness and care for the environment, human rights, and arts and culture, to mention just a few. My volunteer activity in Arlington has mostly been in that latter area, as I served many years on the boards of the Commission on Arts and Culture as well as the Arlington Center for the Arts. I also believe communication among TMMs and residents is important and have been active in writing and distributing a leaflet to encourage residents' participation in an email list and google group, as well as in organizing precinct meetings which we hold in conjunction with precinct 8. I look forward to the opportunity to represent precinct 10 for another three year term.
PRECINCT 11 Carl Wagner cwagnertm11@outlook.com What makes it important for me and for you is that, other than the Select Board, your Town Meeting Members are THE ONLY PEOPLE who can vote yes or no on major positive changes to town - and prevent nasty mistakes and wrong turns. As Precinct 11 Town Meeting member I will work to make decisions that keep our town great, especially: - Maximizing our a!ordability for you and your loved ones, for people on limited incomes and so that people are not prevented from staying or moving here due to costly increases in rent and property taxes - Supporting our town resources such as Arlington Public Schools, our police and fire departments, our Department of Public Works - Insisting that our public o!icials answer to you and your neighbors first and foremost; attending public meetings and reporting back to you - Supporting Arlington's drive to increase our climate resiliency, preventing flooding, ensuring access to open skies, open air, real green spaces About me: -A product of, a parent of a student from, and a supporter of Arlington schools -A long-time Town Meeting Member in Precinct 11 and, earlier, in Precinct 3 -Founding Member of Arlington Residents For Responsible Redevelopment (ARFRR): a grassroots collection of neighbors working to preserve a!ordability and climate resiliency and to provide oversight of Town O!icials -Longtime member of Sustainable Arlington and strong supporter of solar and greener technology that allow us to pollute less and save more money -Nearly life-long Arlington resident, with time o! for college: Peace Corps and time spent living in Somerville, near the 'Paris of the 90s', Davis Square. Couldn't a!ord it, couldn't park, couldn't breathe. Arlington occupies the 'sweet spot' between the urban and the suburban and I'm dedicated to that. Meredith DiMola meredithdimola@gmail.com or call/text 617-458-1744 I have lived in Arlington with my husband and 2 girls (8 & 12), since 2014. Arlington is our home and I care very much about our community. As a Town Meeting Representative, I will continue to represent our precinct to the best of my ability. Each year we discuss and vote on the Warrant Articles and this year there are 85! If you have thoughts on them, I am happy to discuss. As an active community member, I was PTO Co President at Bishop School for 2 years, continue to run their Clean Up Days and have been a Girl Scout Leader for both of my kids for over 6 years. I have worked with the Tree Department to plant trees in our neighborhood as well as at Bishop. I was a Precinct Leader to pass the initiative to fund the High School and volunteered on the Gibbs project as well. I also have been running Good Crosby, where we collect food as a neighborhood for Arlington Eats. In graduate
school I studied Public Administration and Policy and local politics have always been important to me. Thank you for your support and please reach out if you have any questions or thoughts! Meredith DiMola meredithdimola@gmail.com 617-458-1744 Precinct 11 Town Meeting Member Engjellushe (Angel) K. Mozina www.ekmozina.com My husband and I and our 4-year-old have been residents of Precinct 11 in the Town of Arlington for the past 2 and a half years. We love this town and the many things it has to o!er. As fortunate as we feel to live here, we also recognize that things can be improved further by tapping into the common interests of our community who wish to make Arlington a safer, more inclusive, greener, and welcoming place to inhabit, work in and visit. I am a first-generation immigrant. I have been an attorney for almost 15 years. As part of my pro bono volunteer work, I have advocated on such issues as a!ordable housing, discrimination, and workplace rights. I believe that my background and professional experience as well as our family's love of the town will motivate and help me accomplish 3 main goals as a town meeting member: 1) Improve the local infrastructure of the town to make it safer, more accessible and greener; 2) Advocate for town-wide policies and initiatives to increase the inclusiveness and diversity of our community; and 3) Ensure the town remains a!ordable for residents and local businesses Christine C Carney* tmmccarney11@gmail.com I am Christine Carney, and I am a candidate for Town Meeting to represent Precinct 11. I have lived in Arlington my entire life, and my husband and I have raised three children here. I have been a Town Meeting representative for Precinct 11 since 2012. I truly enjoy learning the inter-workings of town government and being part of the process that keeps Arlington a town that provides excellent services to all who live and work here. Arlington faces many challenges, not unlike other growing and changing communities. One of the challenges Arlington is facing is the creation of more a!ordable housing. Arlington is a very desirable community. I believe that it should be a community where people of all backgrounds and socio- economic statuses should comfortably live. Aside from Town Meeting, I've engaged in a few volunteer positions in town. I am currently a commissioner on the Arlington Human Rights Commission. I was a member of the Arlington Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors, serving one term as president. I was active in the Zonta Club of Arlington for several years before it dissolved.
I genuinely enjoy being a Town Meeting member and learning the intricate details of how a town operates. It has been a privilege to serve, and I hope I will be able to continue. I encourage people to contact me should they have any questions or concerns. PRECINCT 12 Alexander Franzosa alexander.franzosa@townmeeting.com My name is Alexander Franzosa, and I am running for Town Meeting Member for Precinct 12 in Arlington. I have lived in Arlington my whole life, as my father did before me. I am a young professional, a graduate of Su!olk University, and a former Senior Class Vice President at Arlington High School in 2016. My politics are simple: I believe in access to a!ordable housing, I want to maintain and improve the town's infrastructure, and I support preservation of Arlington's historic buildings. I am a young man, I am energetic, and I have always believed in the potential of Arlington for greatness. Our sense of history is strong, and our perseverance moving forwards must be even stronger. Arlington can be as great as we can dream it to be, and together we can realize that dream. I am hoping that you will entrust me with the privilege of serving as a Town Meeting Member with your vote on April 10th. If you would like to contact me, I may be reached at my email: alexander.franzosa.townmeeting@gmail.com Robin L Bergman robinforp12@gmail.com Hello Precinct12 Neighbors: An Arlington resident since 1980, a homeowner since 1984, I am also a professional artist with my own small business as a designer and cra"sperson. I've advocated for more support for arts and culture including the initial creation of Arlington Center for the Arts back in the 1980s. I'm a member of Art Link Arlington. As a working artist, I'm concerned that creative people like me are getting priced out of our town along with diversity, renters, students, seniors, disabled and immigrants. In addition to my involvement in the arts, I've been a political organizer, field director and campaign manager working on racism, media issues, the environment, and local and national political campaigns. Locally, I've helped lead the Issues Committee of the Arlington Democratic Town Committee, planning and running successful forums on elections and voting, ballot issues and the climate crisis. I'm a founder and steering committee member of Arlington Fights Racism, working towards more inclusive town government. Committed to social justice, a!ordable housing, diversity and collaboration, I have a deep commitment to making the world a better place. With many important issues before the town, join us for a precinct12
meeting to discuss Warrant Articles, April 7th (tinyurl.com/Arlington12.) I'd love to hear what's important to you. Reach out to me at robinforp12@gmail.com. I'd like to contribute my e!orts to keeping Arlington a welcoming place to live and work and I ask for your vote as a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 12. More here: www.tinyurl.com/AFRrobin12 Lisa Bielefeld* lab@allin.org I am a candidate for reelection to Town Meeting. I've lived in my house since 1990, and have been an attentive and informed Town Meeting member since 2005. I love being involved in local government, and want to be able to continue to show people that they can make a di!erence by getting involved. Arlington has a number of challenges ahead- probable fiscal challenges compounded by the pandemic, increased economic and housing development which should occur without radically changing the character of the town or pushing out long time residents, and an interest in continuing an emphasis on sustainability and a!ordability. Town Meeting will continue to have an impact on decisions made in these areas. Town Meeting is and old and pure form of local government, and global and national issues like climate change and racial and economic inequality are reflected locally through decisions made in Town Meeting. I would love to continue to be a part of these discussions. Shane Curcuru shane@menotomymatters.com My main goals as a Town Meeting Member are to improve transparency in town government, and to simplify town meeting processes, so that it's easier for all residents to understand and influence local government. An informed citizenry is the most important thing to keep town meeting and the various town boards working well and representing our entire diverse population. Transparency in town government means making it simple for voters to understand town finances, policies, zoning, and processes around making requests or changes in town governance. While our town website is pretty good compared to surrounding municipalities, we can still do much more. I'm building a data hub at https://arlingtonma.info/ to provide visibility to more key town data. Simplifying town meeting starts with clearly explaining all the processes around town meeting, and helping all voters understand how to participate - via debate, amendments, or otherwise. I've written https://menotomymatters.com/ with explanations of how town boards work, where to find meeting minutes, and published detailed town meeting warrants with all their amendments and notes. I also believe town governance needs to be truly welcoming and inclusive for all of Arlington's residents no matter what their background, and that it's important to continue to hold town bodies responsible for eliminating bias and treating everyone fairly and respectfully. Lynette Martyn lynettemartyn@gmail.com I've been a Precinct 12 resident for 10+ years, and have two boys at Brackett. You can o"en find us at Robbins or Menotomy Rocks. I'm a business professional with an MBA, and executive level experience in communications, project management, finance & negotiating. I serve on the Superintendent's Diversity Advisory Committee and worked collaboratively to found the parent-led Diversity and Inclusion groups, now active at all our elementary and middle schools. I'm also an active member at First Parish and was
one of the founding host families who helped bring the refugee settlement program, ArCS, to our community. My work in these groups, as well as the work I've done on several warrant articles, including the town's Sanctuary Trust Act warrant and the overnight parking exemption warrant for disabled & low income residents, has led me to want to run for Town Meeting. I'm excited to continue to work to make Arlington a more welcoming and inclusive town for all of our residents. I will commit to holding precinct meetings in Precinct 12 - last year ours was the ONLY precinct not to host a meeting. I will also proactively address resident concerns and ideas - for example, installing a water-bottle fill station at Robbins Farm Park. You can learn more about my background and my values by visiting www.ArlingtonFightsRacism.com/Lynette or joining me and TMM candidate, Robin Bergman, at a Precinct meeting to learn about 2021 warrant articles 7:30 on Wed 4/7 at tinyurl.com/Arlington12. Je! Thielman* je!.thielman@gmail.com I have been an active Town Meeting member since 2001 and a member of the School Committee since 2003. My wife and I have three children, all of whom attended the Brackett School. I enjoy serving on Town Meeting and respectfully ask for your vote on April 10. Since 2017, I have served as the Chair of the Arlington High School Building Committee and helped lead the 2019 debt exclusion campaign, which made it possible for the Town to build the new high school and secure $87 million in state funding for the project. In 2019, I coordinated the AHS Building Committee presentation to Town Meeting, gaining overwhelming support from the body. On Town Meeting, I bring detailed knowledge of Town and school finances (the school department budget is the largest in town). I view issues facing Town Meeting through the lens of an education leader and as a person who leads the region's largest human services organization for New Americans. A significant part of Town Meeting work involves studying, reviewing, and researching the Town, School, Capital, and Community Preservation Act budgets. I know and understand those budgets well, and over the years, have been involved in formulating and influencing them before they get to the floor of Town Meeting. As the leader of a regional organization serving low-income people, I have advocated for more a!ordable housing in the Boston area and review Zoning and other proposals with an aim of ensuring that Arlington is a!ordable and part of a regional solution to supply more housing to people with limited financial resources. I prepare for Town Meeting by researching each warrant article and listening to constituents. I enjoy Town Meeting debates and keep an open mind as I hear from my fellow members on each issue. PRECINCT 14 John F. Maher johnnycape@hotmail.com I respectfully request the support of the voters of Precinct 14 for my candidacy as a town meeting member. Until last year I had served as a town meeting member from our precinct since 2008. I believe that I bring a proven history of e!ective town and community service to this vital town position and in particular the unique needs of our precinct. I have lived in the precinct for over 36 years and had the privilege of serving as Arlington Town Counsel from 1975 to my retirement in 2008. But if anything I have increased my involvement in the civic life of the town since my retirement. I serve on the Permanent Town Building Committee that has overseen the on time on budget rebuild of the town's elementary school buildings, the Community Safety Building and all three of the town's Fire Stations. I also serve as the Town's Chair of the Cable Advisory Committee and serve on the Board of the Symmes Memorial Fund that has provided nearly a million dollars to town health and wellness providers including the Council on Aging, Arlington Eats, FoodLink amongst others. I also serve as Chair of the Greater Cambridge Salvation Army that serves the communities of Arlington, Cambridge and Somerville. I am a veteran. The Town is facing important challenges and I believe that my experience and proven dedication to public service qualifies me as an e!ective and progressive voice in the areas of racial equity, responsible policing and a!ordable housing. Respectfully submitted, John Maher Wynelle Evans evco7@rcn.com WYNELLE EVANS Town Meeting Member Candidate, Precinct 14 evco7@rcn.com Arlington has been my home for over 30 years, and a"er volunteering here in a variety of capacities, I am eager to have a voice at Town Meeting. I bring experience in Town government, as an appointed member of the Design Review Working Group and the Residential Study Group, both formed to address issues of residential development; and as a regular attendee at meetings of the Select Board, Redevelopment Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and currently the Racial Justice Teach-in. Additionally, I bring the attributes of patience, persistence, attention to detail, and the ability to listen to a wide cohort before setting a course, all developed in my career as owner/executive producer at Evans/McNamara, making TV ads for political candidates and non-broadcast programs for a wide variety of organizations. I respectfully ask for your vote, and pledge to put my skills and experience to work to keep Arlington welcoming to all, preserve our stock of attainable housing, make sure that new development prioritizes a!ordable housing, and protect our green spaces and natural environment.
