The Parents’ POV, on TP “We believe that it is in our child’s best interests to be happy in pursuing what she loves. Since she joined TP, we have found her TP advisors and lecturers to be very approachable and friendly. The real industry knowledge they have to pass on to our daughter is an advantage that will only help her excel in her future career.“ Rupal and Shrikant Dave, Parents of Vaidehi, Diploma in Food, Nutrition & Culinary Science “TP has a proven track record of academic excellence and offers well-balanced programmes to nurture its students. Fayth’s course has already inspired her to take her creativity and design skills to another level. Her exposure to TP’s various student development opportunities has also improved her leadership and social skills too.” Richard and Isabelle Sim, Parents of Fayth, Diploma in Interior Architecture & Design
Top five things to know about studying in TP and beyond 1 A broad and relevant curriculum All TP students undergo TP Fundamentals (TPFun), a set of core subjects to nurture 21st-century skills. On top of acquiring industry knowledge and skills, your child will also learn to be effective in areas such as leadership, critical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship, digital literacy and communication. Armed with both soft and hard skills, they will be better equipped to succeed in Singapore’s new-age workforce. You can find full details about your child’s curriculum by visiting any of our full-time diploma course webpages. Click here. 2 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) In TP, your child is required to have his/ her own laptop. This will allow them to take advantage of TP’s latest technology for teaching, learning and administrative support. BYOD provides your child with greater flexibility and convenience to work on assignments and access e-resources at school and home. For BYOD details, including notebook purchase and its financial assistance scheme, click here.
3 Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) TP is also committed to maximising our students’ enrichment and growth outside of the classroom. Your child can hone and showcase their talents and interests via a myriad of CCAs available. Find out more here. 4 What’s new in the local universities’ scene Did you know that from 2020, the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University will drop the 20 percent weightage given to O-level results for polytechnic graduates – and that applicants will be assessed on their polytechnic Grade Point Average? Last year also saw the first batch of TP students in their final-year of poly studies embark on our inaugural Integrated SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree Programme. Successful applicants in this programme will be assured of a place in either the Singapore Institute of Technology or Singapore University of Social Sciences, as well as secure a job too! TP plans to extend this programme to other courses in the future. Read more here. 5 More options for further studies and skills deepening In Singapore’s evolving education landscape, your child has access to a broader range of post-diploma options after they graduate from TP. They can pursue a SkillsFuture Work-Study Programme, which is related to their discipline of study. This programme also supports their transition into the workforce by allowing them to secure full- time employment with industry leaders. Learn more here.
The Parents’ POV, on TP “I am impressed with TP’s strong ties and the many partnerships they have with the various industries, including the sector my son will be pursuing his career in. On top of his academic studies, TP’s environment has also instilled in him discipline, patience and independence. Just like his sisters before him, I believe he is on the right track with his studies in TP!” Chai Cher Kion, Father of Leonard, Diploma in Aerospace Engineering “Keith’s diploma course is not just about sharpening his culinary skills, it gives him the necessary knowledge in business management too. These are the skills that will help turn his childhood dreams into reality. Since he joined TP, I’m glad to see Keith grow into a mature, young man – one who takes the initiative to complete his work and research to achieve his goals!” Jaslyn Wong, Mother of Keith, Diploma in Culinary & Catering Management
The best Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) advice you can give your child 1 MERs and ELR2B2 Your child must meet the Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs) of the course he or she is applying for. To discover details on the TP diploma course(s) your child is interested in, including its MERs, click on the course link(s) featured on pages 13 and 14. Poly application is also dependent on his/ her O-Level aggregate scores computation, commonly known as ELR2B2. For details on ELR2B2 computation, visit here. 2 Aggregate score range The aggregate scores showcase the net ELR2B2 aggregate score range of the lowest and highest ranked students who were admitted to these courses through the previous year’s Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE). These are meant as a reference for applicants applying to these courses and do not constitute the admissions scores for subsequent admissions exercises. You can view the aggregate score range for TP’s diploma courses here.
3 Do advise your child to utilise all 12 Use up choices provided to them fully. Even if all choices your child is confident of getting into their course of choice, competition for places can be unpredictable. 4 Follow the heart but be practical too Your child’s first few choices should reflect the fields that they are passionate about. As competition can be very stiff for some courses, the rest of their options should include those that they would most likely qualify for, taking into account the previous year’s aggregate score range of these courses. 5 Talk to our experts The TP Open House and JAE (both will be held in January 2021) is the best time to have a chat with our friendly course advisors as well as get answers to all the questions you have. Details will be released in December 2020, so be sure to visit www.tp.edu.sg then.
The Parents’ POV, on TP “As a human resources and communications practitioner, I know that a solid, well-rounded academic education gives the edge that school leavers need when seeking employment. Not only does TP provide this, its flexible learning environment encourages a student’s individuality and creativity too. I am glad Ian’s in TP, and I am sure his time here will be among his fondest memories.” Irene Teo, Mother of Ian, Diploma in Psychology Studies “In TP, Jayda has not only gained the hard skills needed to succeed in her future career aspirations in the IT sectors, but she has also picked up relevant soft skills that are equally important to navigate the real, working world. Her TP learning journey has turned her into a more independent and responsible person.” Jason Foo, Father of Jayda, Diploma in Big Data & Analytics
What is the TP Experience? Well, it’s the unique combination of our … Culture of Caring From the moment we welcome your child into TP, he or she will have a Care Person – a dedicated lecturer, called the ‘CP’ – who will be with them throughout their time with us. In addition, TP staff and students (the TP Family as we like to call ourselves) come together twice a year to hold the Campus Care Network (CCN) Day. This vibrant, campus-wide carnival helps to raise funds for our students who are in need of financial aid – and through this act, strengthens our collective community spirit. Dedicated Lecturers TP lecturers are not your average 9-to-5 teachers. All of them possess proven track records in their respective industries with many holding post-graduate qualifications. Their real-world knowledge, relevant industry contacts and most importantly, a shared passion with their students, are complemented with TP’s wide repertoire of learning-teaching approaches, new technologies and state-of-the-art facilities, to create a rich learning experience and an environment that all our students will flourish in.
Excellent Training Facilities Getting trained at cutting-edge facilities, such as the TP-HRG Robotics Innovation Centre, TP-Nvidia AI Technology Centre, IT Security & Forensics Hub, and more, is an advantage your child can look forward to when they join TP. Developed in partnership with various industry sectors, these facilities will keep them up-to-date with the most current operations platforms and the latest developments and practices. The core of your child’s TP experience is practice-oriented learning. A typical week could see them spending time in lectures, tutorials and lab sessions. They will work on projects, several which could be industry-based. Their learning journey will be enhanced by industry-supported, and even industry- leading facilities, which are available at TP. Combined with relevant internship experience, your child’s knowledge and skills gained from TP’s practice-oriented learning will prepare them well for employment upon graduation. Internships Our extensive industry networks include a wide range of businesses and academic institutions that will provide your child with real-world work experience – in Singapore and abroad! Our students have enjoyed internship experiences working with companies such as the trailblazing e-commerce platform, Shopee, and media giants FOX Networks Group Singapore. Others have been involved with leading researchers at prestigious universities and research institutions, both locally and around the world.
Global Exposure In today’s highly globalised economy, it is one of TP’s main priorities to arm our graduates with the necessary skills to help them turn into world-savvy individuals. We are the only polytechnic in Singapore to have a Centre for TransCultural Studies, which works to create opportunities for our students to have cross- cultural experiences, both locally and overseas. Your child will have opportunities to participate in learning trips, overseas internships and exchanges, as well as community involvement programmes. Expert Guidance The TP Experience does not stop at the diploma level. With TP’s Student Services & Career Centre, your child will have full access to help and advice on matters of further education, training and career options. In addition, the Centre offers a wide variety of career preparation and discovery activities such as job preparation workshops, career fairs and company or industry-specific road shows to prepare students for a successful transition to work after they graduate.
