Vol. 66 September 2019 September Greetings ! Come June every year and the monsoons drench us in her drizzles, clench us in her downpours... this has been like this since centuries...and we have learnt to live with it...poets have celebrated and evangelised the rainy days to portray love and grief alike...we have learned to encash it through ayurveda, boat races, the Karkiddakam packets, therapies and monsoon trips and stays. Just that, at times, nature pours onto us a bit more than we can handle, more than what we are used to... with the 44 rivers and many other water bodies in this narrow strip on the valleys of the Nilgiris and the western ghats, what we haven't, but should have learned over the years is to manage the water that flows from the mountains to the Arabian sea through our rivers...especially during our monsoons. Well, every flood happens for a reason. Only even those reasons are man-made, just like the real causes, and doesn't go well with the plans of mother nature. The unscientific cutting, leveling and filling of land for constructions, deforestation for planting cash crops, encroachment of the evergreen forests and river banks for human settlements, building dams on rivers, sand mining from the river beds, the reasons could be many. But it's quite unfortunate that all such unauthorised singular and organised activities have actually destabilised the environmental balance of the entire state beyond comprehension. Many of these directly or indirectly impact the flow of water down to the sea. Within an average stretch of 100 kilometres, this down flow of water needs to be utilised and managed very effectively. Negligence and an impromptu futuristic vision could result in similar deluges that create havoc and destruction year after year. It's time for a totally different approach on how we could prevent such disasters from happening. It's time for a paradigm shift in the environmental concepts we should adopt. It's forever time to think of a new way of life... a lifestyle that we believe prevailed thousands of years ago in this God's own strip of land...during the reign of Lord Mahabali... Let's together walk back to the future... Happy ONAM! June July August
