New Years Resolution Tips from Andy Wells New Year... New You! 1 month FREE trial membership during the month of January! The New Year is here! At this time of year most people become a little more reflective. We tend to evaluate dif- ferent areas of our life we would like to improve specifically one’s health. I am sure many of you reading this article had sincere plans to make 2020 the year you finally took the steps to improve your health. Although many people sincerely felt this way, the odds are probably that only a few actually did achieve their goals. So, how can you make 2021 different and dedicate this year to your health??? Here are three suggestions that I know work because I have personally seen many people apply these three tips and many have lost 20-100 pounds, blood pressure has improved, cholesterol levels have dropped, bodies are more functional, and people are eating more healthfully. 1. Set Exercise Appointments with yourself. Whether you are a busy professional, busy mother or both your day is filled with appointments with other people. You certainly would not be disrespectful and miss a sched- uled appointment. Set exercise appointments with yourself and give yourself the respect you give others. Don’t miss your appointment! When life happens and you miss a scheduled appointment you must reschedule your missed appointment. There are 168 hours in a week. You can do this!!! 2. Set Specific, Realistic, Measurable Goals. Begin with what works for you. This is an example of a specific, realistic and measurable goal for January – exercise 3 times per week for 15 minutes. Set it in your calendar with date, exact time of day, and your exercise plan. Three times per week is 12 exercise sessions of 15 minutes for the first month. If you miss simply reschedule your exercise appointment and make sure by Janu- ary 31 you have exercised 12 different days for 15 minutes. Maintaining your exercise volume each month is a major key. At the end of the month reflect and re-evaluate making changes to your goals. It could be 13 exercise sessions of 20 minutes each. The key is simply to get started, set a goal that is specific, realistic, measurable, and attainable for you to build on. 3. ACCOUNTABILITY!!! Accountability is essential to keeping your exercise appointment with yourself. But for most of us accountability to self is not enough. It’s too easy to rationalize something else is more important. Differ- ent people are successful with different forms of accountability. For some simply investing in a gym membership is enough, for others having a friend or a group you are committed to exercise with, and for others a higher degree of accountability is needed, for example, a personal trainer. We all spend a great deal of money on health insur- ance, which is not health insurance at all. Taking care of one’s health through proper nutrition and exercise is true health insurance. The simple key here is get the accountability you need. If a friend works, great! If a group works, great! If you know you need the highest level of accountability, I suggest investing for 12 weeks in personal train- ing and then re-evaluating. Look at it as if you are taking a class to invest in your health. We have all invested in education to better our lives; so, it just makes sense to do the same for our health. The secret is accountability to a coach, mentor, guide, someone who is committed to your commitment and impervious to your excuses. We are all well aware of the health crisis in America related to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and a host of other preventable diseases. Make a commitment to the three tips above and you are on your way to receiving the benefits of exercise and healthy eating habits. When you are physically fit you will feel better, sleep better, overcome stress, work better, communicate better, play better and live better! Make 2021 the year you really DO something about making a lifestyle change that will improve your quality of life for years to come!!!

For the safety of all involved, the Jasper Highlands Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary had to cancel the December 12th Christmas Parade and related events due to the COVID-19 threat. From the Chief In previous newsletters, we have addressed current events and the challenges that we have faced this year. In addition to the election and political climate, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a focus. The disease is real and has had affects ranging from no symptoms to death. The media and many politicians have capitalized on the disease and created chaos and angst, which has led to doubt and denial that there even was an issue. I would like to speak about the vaccine, but first I would like to give my credentials to allow you the ability to trust, or not trust, my thoughts. I have been a registered nurse for 28 years and worked in, and led, Emergency Departments around the southeast and have a Master’s in Nursing Administration. I have been an EMT for 32 years, 28 of those as a paramedic. I have been in the fire service 34 years and maintain board certification as a National Healthcare Disaster Professional. For the last 9 years, I have worked as a consultant working with hospitals to improve emergency services and patient flow. Most recently, I led the emergency response and preparation for the COVID pandemic in a university hospital system in Philadelphia where I was responsible for three emergency departments and a clinical decision unit, which became the first COVID inpatient unit in the division. The COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2, is a novel coronavirus that is genetically similar to the SARS virus that caused the outbreak in 2003. It is in the coronavirus family, which typically cause upper respiratory infections and symptoms. COVID-19 is different in that it causes systemic complications in many people. These systemic complications cause the severe symptom that can even lead to death in some people. There are many different opinions on the virus and my goal is not to convince you to take, or not to take, the vaccine; rather, to provide education based on my direct experience and research. There are two vaccines that have been approved at the writing of this article, Pfizer and Moderna. Both of these vaccines have similarities as both utilize mRNA and the viral “spike” protein that is utilized by viruses to enter cells. The vaccine is delivered in a “fat bubble.” This type of vaccine has not been mass produced prior to COVID, but has been researched for some time. Contrary to other types of vaccines, it does not contain attenuated (weakened), or even dead viruses. The “spike” is only a section of the virus. Due to this, it is physically impossible to get COVID from the vaccine.
From the Chief Both companies had significant numbers of participants in trials. Pfizer had over 43,000 and Moderna had 30,000. In addition to the trials, the Pfizer vaccine has been administered to several thousand people since approval in Europe. The trials found the following: • 94+% effective in preventing COVID 19 after both doses (administered roughly 3 weeks apart) • 100% effective in preventing severe disease • Most common side effects (less than 6% experienced any of the side effects): - Soreness at injection site - Fever/chills, tiredness, body aches and joint pain for a few days, pri- marily after the second injection - Much discussion is in the media about two (2) allergic reactions in Europe in persons who had documented severe allergies and carried Epipens. There has been one documented allergic reaction in Alaska where the person had no history. She was treated for the allergic re- action without further issues. - The vaccines have been trialed since July and there are no docu- mented cases of longer term effects at this point Vaccination is recommended even if you have had COVID. There is varying immune response to those who have had the disease and the resistance to further infections is less predictable than those who have had the vaccine. The vaccines are currently in distribution to each state based on governmental recommendations. Each state has developed a state specific plan which includes prioritizations developed by the state. No matter your beliefs, each of us wants the pandemic to end to return to more normal lives. Living in a free country allows us to make our own choices, which includes the decision on the immunization. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you as you weigh the pros and cons. The JHFD is here to respond and support our community pre, during, and post-COVID. As for me, I will take the vaccine. Lowell Hardin, MSN, RN, NRP, NHDP-BC || Chief
This running FAQ will be updated each Wednesday Denotes new Q/A Language updates in green font Latest update: December 8, 2020 Q: How do I know when I will be able to take the COVID-19 Vaccine? A: Because there isn’t enough vaccine for everyone, the vaccine will be given in “phases”, or groups, with people who are at highest risk of getting the virus or becoming seriously ill from it getting the vaccine first. The different “phases” are written in the State’s COVID-19 vaccine plan, which is found here. As of December 7, 2020, the first phase, or Phase 1a1, includes healthcare workers, first responders, home care staff, staff of COVID-19 mass-testing events, residents and staff of long-term care facilities (skilled nursing facilities, assisted living centers, group homes and residential homes for the aged), and those providing healthcare services in schools, colleges, and universities. Phase 1a2 includes out-patient health providers including pharmacists, dentists, and behavioral health providers. If you fall into one of those categories, your employer will tell you when you can get a vaccine. Q: Is the COVID-19 vaccine free if I am eligible to receive it? A: Yes, the COVID-19 vaccine will be free to anyone who wishes to get one. Q: Until I have access to the COVID-19 vaccine, what can I do to protect myself from COVID-19? A: Watch your distance (keep at least six feet minimum between you and anyone who doesn’t live with you), wear a mask when in public, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water and avoid being around others who are sick. For more information about protecting yourself visit the CDC website. Q: If I receive the COVID-19 vaccine, but my family has not, should I wear a mask and practice social distancing to prevent bringing the virus home to my family? A: Yes. Even after you receive the vaccine, you should be careful to wear a mask, watch your distance and wash your hands frequently. Q: Is there a chance I could get COVID-19 even after I receive the vaccine? A: Protection from COVID-19 may start shortly after the first dose of vaccine. Additionally, you still need to watch your distance, wear a mask, and wash your hands frequently. Q: Are there any side effects associated with receiving the COVID-19 vaccine? A: No serious side effects have been seen, but some have had headache, felt tired, or had some redness and soreness where they got the shot. These symptoms usually go away within a couple of days.
