Presidents Report The media and government are updating us on Covid-19 almost hourly, we are encouraging all members to take the advice seriously. We are all being impacted, no one is able to avoid the current situation. And this situation has been rapidly changing daily. As I write this, I am also aware that the situation is still changing. We are closely monitoring the news updates, following the advice and implementing changes as fast as we can. This is a job in itself. We are looking at our events, bookings and the clubs future with an uncertainty of how far ahead do we cancel or prepare. It is fair to say few events have the ability to disrupt our industry as much as this current situation. From our meeting on Monday as the Executive Committee, we could not have predicted such a dramatic change in less than a week. We have taken on board that we need to be fluid and proactive with our choices. The dramatic changes does mean that we cannot give assurance that our trading will be as active as usual, many of the regular activities have now been place on hold for a month or so. All of these are being considered with you, staff and our clubs health in mind. Today the news will probably change again so I will leave you with the good advice of the New Zealand Government – Be Kind Looking after others Kindness is an incredibly powerful way to show you are united against COVID-19. You can make a huge difference by: • Checking-in on any elderly or vulnerable people • Looking after anyone that needs help • Dropping supplies to those at home sick • Talking to friends, whānau and neighbours to see if they need support These kinds of connections and offers of help will go a long way to getting others through COVID-19. John Purcell QSM JP Napier RSA President
Clubs New Zealand understands the Coronavirus Pandemic is creating extreme uncertainty for clubs, affecting trade and unsettling individual club members. Clubs New Zealand will attempt to provide relevant information to clubs to assist in the management of what is a very unpredictable situation. NOTICE TO CLUB MEMBERS An important update for members, guests and visitors. As a community-based organisation, we are taking advice on COVID–19 (Coronavirus) seriously, and as a result have implemented the following measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff, members, guests and visitors. Our primary concern will be to protect people, ensure our obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and maintain our duty of care to our staff, and to persons on, or seeking to visit our premises. All persons who have returned from overseas from midnight Sunday 15 March 2020, or been in contact with people who have returned from overseas travel are required by law to self-isolate for a period of 14 days and as a result will not be permitted to enter the Club premises. All persons whose place of employment, education or socialisation that has been closed due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 are not to enter the Club. All persons who experience or show signs of flu like symptoms are not to enter the Club. These symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness and shortness of breath. Persons who are onsite and showing flu like symptoms will be asked to leave the premises. We encourage all persons who are experiencing flu like symptoms to follow the advice of Ministry of Health. For more information on COVID-19 visit https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel- coronavirus/covid-19-novel-coronavirus-health-advice-general-public#symptoms. We encourage all staff, members, guests and visitors to practice good hygiene at all times. The Club has increased signage within the venue to inform staff, members, guests and visitors of good hygiene practices. The Club’s staff will be discouraged from engaging in personal contact, such as the shaking of hands with fellow staff, members, guests and visitors. Please do not take this in any other way than as a preventative and control measure to help prevent the spread of viruses. The Club is also instituting frequent sanitisation of “high touch areas” including bathrooms, door handles and buttons. The Club will continue to monitor the advice of Clubs New Zealand and implement advice accordingly.
Events, Entertainment and Functions The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve rapidly. Following advice from the Ministry of Health on 17 March 2020 it is recommended that non-essential, organised gatherings be limited to fewer than 500 people outdoors or 100 indoors. This includes events such as concerts, sporting fixtures with large crowds, exhibitions and religious celebrations. While all New Zealanders are encouraged to exercise personal responsibility for social distancing, there are no current restrictions recommended on attending other settings, such as shopping centres, or using public transport. For non-essential organised gatherings with fewer than 500 attendees, Ministry of Health recommends that organisers: • remind attendees and staff not to attend if they are feeling unwell • remind attendees and staff not to attend if they have travelled overseas in the past 14 days • ensure emergency management practices are up to date • brief staff on how to practise good hygiene and make it easy for staff and attendees to practise good hygiene • have adequate hand washing facilities available Ministry of Health also offers the following advice for attendees: • stay home and do not attend if you are feeling unwell • stay home and do not attend if you have travelled overseas in the past 14 days. Should the advice from Ministry of Health change, the Club will update its policy accordingly. While onsite at the Club, staff, members, guests and visitors are encouraged to practise good personal hygiene including: • cleaning your hands regularly for at least 1 minute with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub • cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or flexed elbow. We encourage attendees of organised functions and events at the Club to liaise directly with those organisers, rather than the Club. Norfolk Lounge Restaurant The Club and its catering contractors are taking our responsibility seriously and have implemented a number of temporary measures at the dining facilities which include: • Removal of cutlery from all tables. Cutlery will be delivered with your meals. • Introduction of single-use menus. • Increased sanitation of all work and public spaces. • Additional staff training. • Increased use of gloves, including in the acceptance of deliveries. • Removal of ‘help yourself’ sauce and cutlery stations. Persons who do not cooperate with our advice in relation to COVID-19 will be asked to leave our premises. We ask for your complete cooperation and understanding as we continue our commitment to offering a quality based community hub for all people of our community to enjoy. If you have any questions, please seek to liaise with our Club’s management. Further updates may apply.

The Real Meaning Of Peace There once lived a king who announced to prize the artist who would paint the best painting depicting peace. Many great painters sent the king several of their best art pieces. One of the pictures among the various master pieces was of a calm lake perfectly mirroring peacefully towering snow-capped mountains. Overheard was a blue clear sky with fluffy clouds. The picture was perfect. Most of the people who viewed the pictures of peace from various artist thought that it was the best among all. But when the king announce the winner, everyone was shocked. The picture which won the prize had mountains too but it was rugged and bare. The sky looked very angry, there was lightning. This did not look peaceful at all. It looked like the artist has mistakenly submitted his painting depicting storm rather than peace. But if anyone looked closely at the painting, he could see a tiny bush growing in the cracks in the rock. In the bush was a mother bird had built her nest. In the midst of the rush of angry weather, the bird sat on her nest with peace. The peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise or trouble. Peace means to be in the midst of all the chaos and still be calm in the heart. The real peace is the state of mind, not the state of surroundings. The mother bird at her calm, despite her chaotic surroundings indeed was the best representation for Peace.
UPDATE The Veteran Rehabilitation Strategy The strategy is designed to give practical support and assistance to men and women veterans who need it, so they can be well and independent and achieve the best that they can for themselves, their whānau and their communities. Message from the Minister for Veterans, Hon Ron Mark How a society treats its veterans is a measure of that society. In New Zealand, we recognise that those who have put their lives on the line for our country deserve not only our gratitude and respect but also our support and assistance. The Veteran Rehabilitation Strategy is a major initiative for delivering this support. It takes a new approach to making available modern, targeted, and high-quality rehabilitation to those who have been injured or made ill because of their service to New Zealand. I am not alone in advocating that our veterans should receive the best possible support. For Veterans’ Affairs, advocating for veteran rights, and ensuring that these are delivered, is their bread-and-butter business, and something they do every day. But this strategy recognises that there are a lot of other agencies which can—and should—advocate and deliver for veterans as well. And it also recognises that the families and whanāu of veterans who have been injured or become ill because of their service need and deserve our support. While Veterans’ Affairs leads this strategy, I am pleased to note that it has consulted closely on all aspects of it with other interested parties. This shared understanding of what is needed to make the strategy work, and the shared commitment of so many organisations to playing their part in helping Veterans’ Affairs to deliver it, is the real underlying strength that the strategy is able to offer. As Minister for Veterans, I welcome this new approach and the principles on which it is built. I am looking forward to seeing the difference it will make to the lives of our veterans. A man hates his wife’s cat with a passion and decides to get rid of it once and for all. He drives twenty blocks away from home and drops the cat there. The cat is already walking up the driveway as the man approaches his house. The next day, he decides to drop the cat forty blocks away, but the same thing happens. He keeps on increasing the number of blocks, but the cat keeps on coming home before him. At last he decides to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again, and another right and so on until he reaches what he thinks is a perfect spot and drops the cat there. Hours later, the man calls his wife at home and asks her, “Jen, is the cat there?” “Yes, why do you ask?” answers the wife. Frustrated, the man says, “Put the cat on the phone, I’m lost and I need directions!”

Two Irishmen flew to Canada on a hunting trip. They chartered a small plane to take them into the Rockies for a week hunting moose, and they managed to bag six. As they were loading the plane to return, the pilot said that the plane could take only four moose. The two lads objected strongly saying, "Last year we shot six. The pilot let us take them all and he had the same plane as yours." Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all six were loaded, and the plane took off. However, while attempting to cross some mountains, even on full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down. Somehow, surrounded by the moose bodies, Paddy and Mick managed to survive the crash. After climbing out of the wreckage, Paddy asked Mick, "Any idea where we are?" Mick replied, "I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last year." Two Irishmen are floating on a boat, lost at sea. They ran out of food a couple of days ago, and ran out of water just today, so naturally they’re pretty desperate. Out on the water, one of them spies a genie’s lamp, and they both frantically paddle towards it. One of them pull out the lamp and rubs it, and lo and behold, a genie pops out! “Will ye grant us tree wishes mister?” the Irishman pleads. “I’d love ta, but this old genie’s barely enough for just the one. So wish carefully.” Quickly, one of the men calls out, “I wish the ocean’d turn ta Guinness!” “Consider it done.” The genie and the lamp disappear, and the entire ocean changes from water to beer. The second Irishman looks at the first, stunned, then finally manages, “Ya fockin’ idiot! Now we have ta piss in the boat!”

COVID-19CORONAVIRUS Information from the Ministry of Health Webpage March 2020 What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus. There are simple steps you can take to protect you and your family/whānau. Symptoms of COVID-19 The symptoms of COVID-19 are: • a cough • a high temperature (at least 38°C) • shortness of breath. These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have COVID-19. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu. However, infections with mild symptoms such as cold-like symptoms or no symptoms are likely, but it’s not known how common this is. How to protect yourself and others • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues. • Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately. • Wash your hands with soap and water often. • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell. • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs. • Stay home if you feel unwell and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453. How is it spread? COVID-19, like the flu, can be spread from person to person. When a person who has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or talks, they may spread droplets containing the virus a short distance, which quickly settle on surrounding surfaces. You may get infected by the virus if you touch those surfaces or objects and then touch your mouth, nose or eyes. That’s why it’s really important to use good hygiene, regularly wash and thoroughly dry your hands, and use good cough etiquette.
What can I do to stop COVID-19 spreading? • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues. • Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately. • Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds). • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell. • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. • Avoid personal contact, such as kissing, sharing cups or food with sick people. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs. • Stay home if you feel unwell and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453. Looking after your mental wellbeing What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus. Media coverage or public discussion of COVID-19 may affect you. It’s normal to feel distressed and experience symptoms of stress in this time. Tips for managing your own mental wellbeing • Spend time in places that feel safe and comfortable as much as possible. • Tell yourself that how you are feeling is a normal reaction and will pass – it is nothing to be afraid of. • Reach out to your usual supports – family and whānau, friends and workmates. Sharing how we feel and offering support to others is important. • Keep to usual routines – mealtimes, bedtime, exercise and so on. • Keep active – going to work, doing usual leisure activities and seeing friends can improve general wellbeing and help distract from distressing feelings. If over days and weeks your distress or stress symptoms are escalating or you feel you are not coping, help and professional support is available. For support with anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing, you can call or text 1737 to talk with a trained counsellor for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call Healthline 24/7 on 0800 358 5453 if you need to speak to someone. Visit health.govt.nz/covid-19 for more information.
