A Journey to Ireland: Walking in the Path of the Irish Saints 13 Days: July 31 to August 12, 2022 Under the Spiritual Leadership of Fr. Chris Ponnet & Dennis Doyle - Celtic Harpist, Singer & Storyteller
Your Pilgrimage Leaders Fr. Chris Ponnet is a Catholic priest of Los Angeles Archdiocese ordained in 1983. Fr. Chris is chaplain/pastor of St. Camillus Center serving at LAC USC Medical Center. He spent most of his five months sabbatical in Ireland, enjoying the beauty and music and researching family history (Breen, Ryan, McGrath, Collins) and the Anamcara spiritual traditions. Professor Dennis Doyle has taught English and Humanities at Glendale College for nearly 40 years. This will be his eighth trip to Ireland and sixth trip leading a group overseas. In addition to a career teaching about Irish history, literature, and culture, Dennis is an avid participant. He works as a professional Irish musician (harp, mandolin, bodhran, piano), is an award-winning singer, holds certification for fluency in the Irish language, and has created a discography of 12 recordings and two published books on Irish music. He has performed throughout North America, Japan, and Ireland. Dennis plays locally each year at the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Religious Education Congress. He also has helped lead retreat programs on Celtic Spirituality at Redemptorist Renewal Centers in New Mexico and Wisconsin, at the Holy Spirit Retreat in Encino, California, and at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange, California. After breakfast, the day is at leisure to experience Galway and its pubs, restaurants, bookstores, and music shops. Some may wish to tour the Galway Cathedral, enjoy a boat trip to Lake Corrib, or take a walk down around the Spanish Arch. A short train ride to the castle town of Athenry is available from the town train station. Dinner is on our own this evening to explore the local restaurants and pubs. Day 10, Tuesday, August 9: Dublin: Book of Kells, Trinity College, Epic Museum & Guiness Storehouse We begin today with a visit of Trinity College, where the famous Book of Kells is kept. Next, we visit EPIC - The Irish Emigration Museum, located in Dublin’s Docklands, which covers the history of the Irish diaspora and emigration to other countries. In recent years, it has been voted the best museum in Europe.
