Living in Australia is great. We’ve got a gorgeous country, and endless days of sunshine each
year. Of course, all that sunshine means that you need to protect your skin. And not all of us
want to lather up with thick sunscreen each and every day.
But you still want the sun protection. You want to avoid skin cancer, and also, using sun
protection daily is the best way to fight the signs of ageing. Who wants wrinkles at 25?
So it makes sense to add some SPF to your daily skincare routine. You get extra sun protection
while you’re out and about, without having to think about applying it specially. But just like
sunscreen, SPF skincare can contain some pretty toxic ingredients.
It’s not just the active (sunscreen) ingredients, either. You still have to watch out for all the
usual nasties like parabens, preservatives and synthetic fragrances. And to make it even more
confusing, some of the ingredients lists are incredibly long and totally confusing.
And that’s where Hello Charlie comes in. I’ve spent months finding all the ingredients,
researching them and reviewing them so that I can recommend the best and safest to you.

I wrote a whole blog post on sunscreen ingredients last year, so rather than repeat everything, I’ll
just list the ingredients to watch out for. If you’d like to read the post, take a look here at my
Ultimate Guide to Toxic Sunscreen Ingredients.
In the meantime, here are the sunscreen (active) ingredients to watch out for:

Like all skincare, you also need to watch out for the inactive ingredients. These generally make up
50 to 70% of the product.
Here’s what I found in SPF products that I would take care to avoid.

Comments: So many ingredients! The ones that stand out for me are the perfume, propylene
glycol and phenoxyethanol. There are also a couple of ingredients that don’t have much data at
all, like myricetin, which seems to be an irritant, but I couldn’t find much other information.

Comments: The sunscreen ingredient in this is ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate),
which scores a 6 in EWG, so that’s not a good one. Then there’s phenoxyethanol, propylene
glycol, dimethicone, polysorbate 20, and Polyacrylamide & C13-14 Isoparaffin & Laureth-7
(there are concerns that it could be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane). So
this one is a no for me.

Comments: Fragrance and phenoxyethanol are the two here that
I always try and avoid. The sunscreen ingredient is titanium
dioxide, which is a physical blocker, which is good. However I find
titanium dioxide irritating, so that would also put me off. I
estimated this as a 3 in EWG Skindeep, so it’s not awful, but not
one I’d choose.

Comments: The sunscreen ingredients are chemical
absorbers, not blockers, but they’re the least toxic ones. Do
note that octisalate scores a 5 in the EWG databases,
avobenzone gets a 2, and octocrylene scores a 3.
It’s not scoring super high in EWG, but I don’t like the TEA
(Triethanolamine), phenoxyethanol, and octisalate. Also,
there’s a few irritants in there as well as dimethicone which
isn’t great for acne.

Comments: The ingredients in this look good but be aware that this is not a
sunscreen. It’s NICNAS approved, rather than TGA approved which is why it has an
SPF 15 rating despite the high zinc volume. So it’s a moisturiser or balm with SPF,
rather than a sunscreen. Make sure you’re using a TGA approved sunscreen for full
sun protection. The ingredients are excellent, though.

registered with the TGA, because of the SPF30+
rating. However, I’ve included it here because it’s
advertised as a 3in1 moisturiser, tinted foundation

It’s hard to get hold of the ingredients, but I
managed to find an old listing from 2016 (so please
be aware that this may not be up to date).
I don’t like the phenoxyethanol, or the PEG-7
hydrogenated castor oil, and there’s also silicones
(cyclomethicone) but all up I think this would only
score a 2 in the EWG database, so it’s okay.

They don’t disclose the ingredients in their Protect Me sunscreen, so you don’t know
what’s in it. This one, however, is a cosmetic product, not a sunscreen, and by law
they have to provide full ingredients. So what do we have? There’s parabens, PEGs,
petrochemicals (paraffin), octyl methoxycinnamate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor,
triethanolamine and phenoxyethanol. Thanks, but no thanks!

Comments: The ingredients in this look pretty good, too. Zinc oxide
and titanium dioxide together offer good full spectrum protection.
Personally, I find titanium dioxide irritating, and I can’t wear it at
