Living in Australia is great. We’ve got a gorgeous country, and endless days of sunshine each year. Of course, all that sunshine means that you need to protect your skin. And not all of us want to lather up with thick sunscreen each and every day. But you still want the sun protection. You want to avoid skin cancer, and also, using sun protection daily is the best way to fight the signs of ageing. Who wants wrinkles at 25? So it makes sense to add some SPF to your daily skincare routine. You get extra sun protection while you’re out and about, without having to think about applying it specially. But just like sunscreen, SPF skincare can contain some pretty toxic ingredients. It’s not just the active (sunscreen) ingredients, either. You still have to watch out for all the usual nasties like parabens, preservatives and synthetic fragrances. And to make it even more confusing, some of the ingredients lists are incredibly long and totally confusing. And that’s where Hello Charlie comes in. I’ve spent months finding all the ingredients, researching them and reviewing them so that I can recommend the best and safest to you. If you’re interested in finding out more, there’s suggestions for further reading towards the end, and a special 10% off all the SPF skincare that we stock at Hello Charlie. So what are you waiting for? Read on! www.hellocharlie.com.au 4
I wrote a whole blog post on sunscreen ingredients last year, so rather than repeat everything, I’ll just list the ingredients to watch out for. If you’d like to read the post, take a look here at my Ultimate Guide to Toxic Sunscreen Ingredients. In the meantime, here are the sunscreen (active) ingredients to watch out for: •Oxybenzone •Octinoxate •Homosalate •Octisalate •Octocrylene •Benzophenone-4 •Benzophenone-8 •Menthyl anthranilate (Meradimate) •PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) •Padimate O •Trolamine salicylate Like all skincare, you also need to watch out for the inactive ingredients. These generally make up 50 to 70% of the product. Here’s what I found in SPF products that I would take care to avoid. Benzalkonium chloride (BAK) Preservative Problem: Skin, eye and respiratory irritant and allergen Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) Preservative Problem: BHT - respiratory irritant; possible organ system toxicity Citrus oils Fragrance ingredients Problem: some citrus oils (including grapefruit and lemon oils) can be photosensitizing …. …. Continued from previous page Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate Preservative Problem: human toxicant or allergen; evidence of organ system toxicity Fragrance or perfume Problem: unknown ingredients. May contain phthalates. Parabens Preservatives. Problem: endocrine (hormone) disrupter. PEG’s (polyethylene glycols) Humectant (keeps things moist). Problem: penetration enhancer, contamination concerns. Phenoxyethanol Preservative. Problem: irritant, can depress the central nervous system in infants. Phthalates Plasticizers, softeners. Problem: endocrine (hormone) disrupter. Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 60 & Polysborbate 80 Surfactant (cleansing agent) and emulsifier. Problem: contamination concerns (ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane). Propylene Glycol Humectant (keeps things moist). Problem: irritant, penetration enhancer. Retinol Skin conditioner Problem: may increase sun sensitivity; possible organ toxicity (reproductive and non reproductive) Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) Preservative. Problem: irritant. Synthetic Colours (FD&C and D&C) Problem: coal tar derivatives with contamination concerns. www.hellocharlie.com.au 6

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Aminomethyl Propanediol, Aqua (Mineral Spring Water), Aqua (Water), Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Benzotriazolyl Dodecyl p-Cresol, Butylene Glycol, Butyloctyl Salicylate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Citrus Reticulata Peel Extract, Commiphora Abyssinica Resin Extract, Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract, Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Disodium Lauriminodipropionate, Tocopheryl Phosphates, Dunaliella Salina Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Olive Oil Cetyl Esters, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydroxyapatite, Maris Aqua (Dead Sea Water), Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Methylpropanediol, Myricetin, Niacinamide, Octyldodecyl, Neopentanoate, Oenothera Biennis Oil, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fruit Extract, Helianthus Annuus Sprout Extract, Parfum, PEG-100 Stearate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocin, Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract, Pentylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Phoenix Dactylifera (Date) Seed Extract, Polyglycerin-3, Polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate, Porphyra Umbilicalis Extract, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Propylene Glycol, Salicylic Acid, Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Lactate, Stearyl Alcohol, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) Acetate, Tris (Tetramethyl Hydroxypiperidinol) Citrate, Undecylcrylene Dimethicone, Xanthan Gum, Zinc PCA, Zizyphus Jujuba Fruit Extract. EWG Skin Deep Rating: n/a Cost: 50ml for $83.00 Comments: So many ingredients! The ones that stand out for me are the perfume, propylene glycol and phenoxyethanol. There are also a couple of ingredients that don’t have much data at all, like myricetin, which seems to be an irritant, but I couldn’t find much other information. www.hellocharlie.com.au 8
Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 20.0%. Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Purified Water (Aqua), Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Vegetable Glycerin, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Polyglyceryl-2 Oleate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Polyglyceryl-2 Stearate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Dimethicone, Magnesium Sulfate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Plant Stem Cells (Alpine Rose, Malus Domestica, Solar Vitis) and BioActive 8 Berry Complex*, Soothing Complex: [Sodium Hyaluronate, Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract, Boswellia Serrata (Boswellin) Extract], Rosa Damascena (Rose) Flower Distillate*, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil*, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil*, Borago Officinalis (Borage) Seed Oil*, Iron Oxides, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch*, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract*†, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract*†, Tocopherol, Phenethyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Rose Isolates, Vanilla Isolates, Pelargonium Graveolens (Rose Geranium) Flower Oil*, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil*. *Certified Organic Ingredients †Fair Trade EWG Skin Deep Rating: n/a Cost: 58ml for $24.95 Comments: Most of the ingredients on here are great, it’s just the dimethicone. Dimethicone only scores a 3 in EWG, but many of us want to avoid silicones in our skincare. Nothing toxic in here, though – I estimated it as a 2 in EWG Skindeep. www.hellocharlie.com.au 9
Ingredients: Aqua, (water), Zinc oxide & Caprylic capric triglyceride, Polyhydroxystearic acid & isotearic acid, Prunus dulcis (Sweet Almond) oil, Prunus ameniaca (Apricot) oil, Glycerine, Cetearyl glucoside & Cetearyl alcohol, Glyceryl stearate, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) oil, Vitis vinifera & Actinidia chinensis (Vinanza grape & Kiwi extract), Hyaluronic acid, Rubus idaeus (Raspberry seed) oil, Punica granatum (Pomegranate) extract, Gandoderma lucidum (Reishi mushroom), Xanthan gum, Gluconolactone, Sodium benzoate, Calcium gluconate, Vitamin E. EWG Skin Deep Rating: n/a Cost: 60ml for $44.10 Comments: Nothing bad in this one – a good ingredients list. www.hellocharlie.com.au 10
Ingredients: Aqua (Purified Water), Ethylhexyl Palmitate , Polyacrylamide & C13-14 Isoparaffin & Laureth-7 , Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate-20, Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, (Oat) Beta Glucan, Sodium Hyaluronate, Propylene Glycol, Sorbitan Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Ubiquinone (CoQ10), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium PCA, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Cedrus Atlantica (Cedar) Bark Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Cymbopogon Martinii (Palmarosa) Oil, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Flower Oil, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Oil, Allantoin, Wheat Germ Oil / Palm Oil Aminopropanediol Esters (Omega 6 Ceramide Wheat Germ), Disodium EDTA, d-Limonene, Linalool. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 50ml for $29.95 Comments: The sunscreen ingredient in this is ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), which scores a 6 in EWG, so that’s not a good one. Then there’s phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, dimethicone, polysorbate 20, and Polyacrylamide & C13-14 Isoparaffin & Laureth-7 (there are concerns that it could be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane). So this one is a no for me. www.hellocharlie.com.au 11
Ingredients: Water, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Glycerin, Bis-Phenylpropyl Dimethicone, Arachidyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Panthenol, Benzyl Alcohol, Ethylene/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Behenyl Alcohol, Steareth-2, Fragrance, Steareth-21, Polyacrylamide, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Arachidyl Glucoside, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Laureth-7, Benzalkonium Chloride, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, BHT, Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Silica EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 120ml for $14.99 Comments: There are so many toxic ingredients in this that I hardly know where to start. I estimated this one on EWG at about a 7 – that’s high hazard. You’ve got phenoxyethanol, parabens, fragrance, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, BHT, and benzalkonium chloride just to mention a few. Avoid! www.hellocharlie.com.au 12
Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 6.7%, Inactive Ingredients: Water, Isoamyl Laurate, Decyl Oleate, Isoamyl Cocoate, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Stearic Acid, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Royal Jelly, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Hydrastis Canadensis(Goldenseal) Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract, Beeswax, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Sodium Carboxymethyl C10-16 Alkyl Glucoside,Sorbitan Stearate, Behenyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Lauryl Glucoside, Tocopherol, Alumina, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Xanthan Gum, Isostearic Acid, Lecithin, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Citric Acid, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Sodium Phytate, Sorbic Acid, Alcohol, Fragrance (Natural Fragrance), Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Limonene, Linalool. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 56.6g for $39.95 Comments: Fragrance and phenoxyethanol are the two here that I always try and avoid. The sunscreen ingredient is titanium dioxide, which is a physical blocker, which is good. However I find titanium dioxide irritating, so that would also put me off. I estimated this as a 3 in EWG Skindeep, so it’s not awful, but not one I’d choose. www.hellocharlie.com.au 13
Ingredients: Active Ingredients Avobenzone 3%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 7%, Inactive Ingredients: Water, Isopropyl Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Diisopropyl Sebacate, Silica, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Sucrose Tristearate, Dimethiconol, Pentylene Glycol, Polysorbate 61, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glycyrrhetinic Acid, Panthenol, Triethanolamine, Allantoin, Carbomer, Potassium Sorbate, Zinc Gluconate, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Hydroxypalmitoyl Sphinganine (Ceramide) EWG Skin Deep Rating: 2 Low Hazard Cost: 118ml for $19.99 Comments: The sunscreen ingredients are chemical absorbers, not blockers, but they’re the least toxic ones. Do note that octisalate scores a 5 in the EWG databases, avobenzone gets a 2, and octocrylene scores a 3. It’s not scoring super high in EWG, but I don’t like the TEA (Triethanolamine), phenoxyethanol, and octisalate. Also, there’s a few irritants in there as well as dimethicone which isn’t great for acne. www.hellocharlie.com.au 14
Ingredients: Avobenzone 2.50%, Octinoxate 6.00%, Octisalate 5.00%, Oxybenzone, 4.00%, Water, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Silica, Dimethyl Capramide, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Coriandrum Sativum (Coriander) Fruit Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Flower Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Oil, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Enantia Chlorantha Bark Extract, Arctium Lappa Root Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Betula Alba Bark Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Oleanolic Acid, Tocopherol, Cetearyl Phosphate, Stearic Acid, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Nylon-12, Xanthan Gum, Cetyl Alcohol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Sodium Benzoate, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891). EWG Skin Deep Rating: 4 Moderate Hazard Cost: 60ml for $34.50 Comments: The sunscreen ingredients aren’t good – oxybenzone and octinoxate both score as high hazards in EWG Skindeep. Then there’s phenoxyethanol, clove oil (which is thought to be an immune system toxicant or allergen) and cyclopentasiloxane (which is a suspected endocrine disrupter and neurotoxin). There’s also grapefruit and lemon peel oils which are photosensitizing. So this one is a no for me. www.hellocharlie.com.au 15
Ingredients: Octyl Methoxycinnamate 8.0% W/W, Butyl Methoxy Dibenzoyl Methane 1.3 W/W Contains: Phenoxyethanol 0.6% W/W, Methyl Hydroxybenzoate 0.3% W/W, And Propyl Hydroxybenzoate 0.15% W/W Also Contains: Water, Mineral Oil, Propylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, Tricontanyl Pvp, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Dimethicone, Lanolin, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Magnesium Aluminium Silicate, Carbomer, Stearic Acid, BHT, Disodium Edta, Iron Oxides, Sodium Hydroxide, Polysorbate 80, Fragrance. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 50ml for $9.99 Comments: Where to start? Octyl Methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), phenoxyethanol, propylene glycl, mineral oil (petrochemical), dimethicone, BHT, polysorbate 80, fragrance, and we also have parabens: Propyl Hydroxybenzoate is propylparaben and Methyl Hydroxybenzoate is methylparaben. I’m definitely giving this one the big swerve. www.hellocharlie.com.au 16
Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Natural Cera Alba (Beeswax), Vitellaria Paradoxa*, Uncoated Nano-Free Mineral Zinc Oxide, Theobroma (Cacao)*, Pure Essential Oils Of Lavendula Angustifolia (Lavender), Commiphora Molmol Gum Oleoresin (Myrrh) And Chamaemelum Mobile (Chamomile) And Native Botanical + Vibrational Extracts. *Certified Organic EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 120g for $39.95 Comments: The ingredients in this look good but be aware that this is not a sunscreen. It’s NICNAS approved, rather than TGA approved which is why it has an SPF 15 rating despite the high zinc volume. So it’s a moisturiser or balm with SPF, rather than a sunscreen. Make sure you’re using a TGA approved sunscreen for full sun protection. The ingredients are excellent, though. www.hellocharlie.com.au 17
Ingredients: Active ingredients: Non-Nano Uncoated Zinc Oxide 10%, inactive ingredients: *Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, Euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, *Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, *Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel wax, *Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, Olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, *Rubus idaeus (raspberry) seed, *Hippophae rhamnoides (seabuckthorn) seed oil, *Punica granatum (pomegranate) seed oil, Tocopherols (sunflower), *Citrus reticulata (tangerine) peel oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, *Anthemis nobilis (chamomile) flower extract, *Vanilla planifolia (vanilla) bean, Limonene‡, Linalool‡ (‡natural component of flavor) EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 4.3g for $6.95 Comments: Good lip balm with great ingredients, and the 10% zinc oxide will give your lips some protection when you’re out and about. A good, everyday choice. I always have this on me in summer or if I’m in the garden. www.hellocharlie.com.au 18
Ingredients: Active: Zinc Oxide (18%) Other: Water, Isopropyl Myristate, Cyclomethicone, PEG-7 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Polyethylene, Glycerin, Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Iron Oxide EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 50g for $32.00 Comments: This one is actually a sunscreen, and is registered with the TGA, because of the SPF30+ rating. However, I’ve included it here because it’s advertised as a 3in1 moisturiser, tinted foundation and sunscreen in one. It’s hard to get hold of the ingredients, but I managed to find an old listing from 2016 (so please be aware that this may not be up to date). I don’t like the phenoxyethanol, or the PEG-7 hydrogenated castor oil, and there’s also silicones (cyclomethicone) but all up I think this would only score a 2 in the EWG database, so it’s okay. www.hellocharlie.com.au 19
Ingredients: Certified Organic Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Zinc Oxide, Certified Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Fruit Butter, Certified Organic Unrefined Cera Alba (Beeswax), Mixed Tocopherols (Natural Vitamin E), Certified Organic Copernicia Prunifera (Carnauba) Wax, Natural Coconut Extract, Aroma (Proprietary Blend Of Essential Oils), Certified Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil , Certified Organic Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) C02 Extract, Certified Organic Daucus Carota (Carrot) CO2 Extract. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 100g for $37.95 Comments: I couldn’t seem to find out the zinc content in this one, but the ingredients in this are great. Miessence prefer to make this in their own organic certified factory, rather than have it made externally by a TGA approved sunscreen manufacturer, which is why it’s an SPF 15. It’s NICNAS approved, but not TGA approved, so it’s a moisturiser with SPF rather than a sunscreen. Read more about this in our article on why you won’t find organic sunscreens in Australia. www.hellocharlie.com.au 20
Ingredients: Purified Water, Jojoba Oil, Zinc Oxide, Cetearyl Alcohol, Vegetable Glycerine, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Glyceryl Caprylate, Organic Shea Butter, Vanilla & Almond Extract, Organic Lavender Essential Oil, Sandalwood Essential Oil, Vitamin E, Organic Rosemary Extract, Organic Lavender Extract, Rosehip Extract EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 75ml for $34.95 Comments: The ingredients are good! I love this one, easy to use everyday and great ingredients. Recommended! Sadly, I’ve just found out that it’s been discontinued. www.hellocharlie.com.au 21
Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 20%, Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Phenethyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Stearate, Boswellia Carterii Oil(Frankincense), Cetearyl Glucoside, Citrus Sinensis Peel Essential Oil(Sweet Orange), Lavender Essential Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens, Flower Oil, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Rosa Canina Seed Extract, Sucrose Cocoate, Xanthan Gum, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Isoamyl Laurate, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Citric Acid. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 50ml for $64.95 Comments: Ingredients are good – nothing to be concerned about here. www.hellocharlie.com.au 22
Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Mermadimate (3.5%), Octinoxate (7.5%) Sunscreen. Inactive Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Castor Oil, Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Cyclomethicone, DEA-Cetyl Phosphate, Hexyl Laurate, EMU Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Polysorbate 60, Diazolidinyl Urea, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Allantion, Mica, Carbomer, Methylparaben, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Sodium Ascorbate, Propylparaben. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides. EWG Skin Deep Rating: 4 Moderate Hazard Cost: 50ml for $65.00 Comments: Parabens, silicones (dimethicone and cyclomethicone), octinoxate, PEGs, and diazolidinyl urea. Too many nasties for me, especially when there are so many better, more natural choices. www.hellocharlie.com.au 23
Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Avobenzone (2.0%), Octinoxate (7.5%) Sunscreen. Inactive Ingredients: Water, Dimethicone, Mica, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Xylitylglucoside, PEG-40 Castor Oil, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Hexyl Laurate, Anhydroxylitol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Xylitol, Polysorbate 60, Phenoxyethanol, Butylene Glycol, Tribehenin, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Allantoin, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Copper Gluconate, Carbomer, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Aminomethyl Propanol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Sodium Ascorbate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Tin Oxide. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides. EWG Skin Deep Rating: 3 Moderate Hazard Cost: 50ml for $65.00 Comments: Again, there are just too many ingredients that I don’t like. There’s octinoxate, dimethicone, PEGs, phenoxyethanol, polysorbate 60, phenoxyethanol, and aminomethyl propanol (which is an irritant and has nitrosamine contamination concerns). Not for me! www.hellocharlie.com.au 24
Ingredients: Aqua, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Cera Alba, Paraffinum Liquidum, Isopropyl Myristate, Silica, 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Octocrylene, Peg-15 Cocamine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Methylparaben, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Benzyl Alcohol, Peg-40 Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 150g for $19.95 Comments: Here’s a good example of why Milk is not one of my preferred brands. They don’t disclose the ingredients in their Protect Me sunscreen, so you don’t know what’s in it. This one, however, is a cosmetic product, not a sunscreen, and by law they have to provide full ingredients. So what do we have? There’s parabens, PEGs, petrochemicals (paraffin), octyl methoxycinnamate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, triethanolamine and phenoxyethanol. Thanks, but no thanks! www.hellocharlie.com.au 25
Ingredients: Aqua, Zinc Oxide, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Squalane (Olive), Cetearyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Piroctone Olamine (Olamine Salt), Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Seed Extract, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (Guar Gum), Allantoin (Comfrey Root) Extract, P Anisic Acid (Natural Preservative), Glyceryl Stearate, Potassium Sorbate, Caffeine, Hyaluronic Acid, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Camellia Sinensis (ECGC Green Tea) Leaf Extract. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 75g for $34.90 Comments: The ingredients all look good, and there’s a good amount of zinc oxide to give broad spectrum protection. www.hellocharlie.com.au 26
Ingredients: Aqua, Zinc Oxide, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Squalene (Olive), Coco-Caprylate, Cetearyl Glucoside, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Isostearate, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Rubus Idaeus (Red Raspberry) Seed Oil, Piroctone Olamine, Allantoin, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (Guar Gum), Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate (Coconut Derived Emulsifier), Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 200g for $29.90 Comments: Another one from Moo Goo that looks good. There’s a nice amount of zinc oxide to give broad spectrum protection, and the rest of the ingredients look good, too! www.hellocharlie.com.au 27

Petrochemicals, propylene glycol, parabens, perfume … and that’s just the P’s! Then we’ve got ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, palm oil (isopropyl palmitate), and triethanolamine (TEA). I think that’s enough. You can see why I’d avoid it! www.hellocharlie.com.au 29

By my estimation, this one scores a 7 in EWG. Not good! www.hellocharlie.com.au 30

Then there’s parabens, fragrance, and octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), petrolatum, PEG’s .. By my estimates this scores an 8 in EWG, which is super high. Stay away from this one. www.hellocharlie.com.au 32
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Isopropyl Isostearate, Octocrylene, Panthenol, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate Copolymer, Triethanolamine, Stearyl Alcohol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Benzyl Alcohol, PTFE, Cetyl Alcohol, Titanium Dioxide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Behenyl Alcohol, Sucrose Polysoyate, Methyl Paraben, Carbomer, Ethylparaben, Fragrance, Laureth-7, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, PEG-100 Stearate, Propylparaben, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Stearic Acid, Zinc Oxide, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Yellow 5 - CI 19140, Red 40 - CI 16035. There’s parabens, fragrance, TEA (Triethanolamine), BHT, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, PEG’s, FD&C colours, even teflon in this one (PTFE). No thank you! www.hellocharlie.com.au 33

Fragrance, PEG’s, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, TEA (Triethanolamine), and then the sunscreen ingredients: oxybenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene. I estimated this as a 7 in EWG, and again, I’d suggest you give it the swerve. www.hellocharlie.com.au 34

Not one I’d choose. www.hellocharlie.com.au 36
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Ethyl Oleate, Zinc Oxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Titanium Dioxide – Non Nano Particles, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Sorbitan Oleate, Polyglyceryl–3 Polyricinoleate, Silica, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Tribehenin, Actinidia Chinensis Seed Oil, Pichia/Resveratrol Ferment Extract, Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu Plum) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Alumina, Stearic Acid, Pelargonium Roseum (Geranium) Leaf Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil, Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), Gluconolactone, Totarol, Parfum (Natural, certified organic preservative system using Vanilla and Almond Extracts). EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 50ml for $48.95 Comments: All the ingredients are good. There is one that you might want to be aware of: cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). This scores a 5 in EWG because of the risk of overdose. However, as the recommended daily allowance is 25g, it’s going to be very difficult to overdose through your moisturiser! I’m happy with this one. www.hellocharlie.com.au 37
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Ethyl Oleate, Zinc Oxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Titanium Dioxide – Non Nano Particles, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Sorbitan Oleate, Polyglyceryl–3 Polyricinoleate, Silica, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Tribehenin, Actinidia Chinensis Seed Oil, Pichia/Resveratrol Ferment Extract, Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu Plum) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Alumina, Stearic Acid, Pelargonium Roseum (Geranium) Leaf Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil, Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), Gluconolactone, Totarol, Parfum (Natural, certified organic preservative system using Vanilla and Almond Extracts) Iron Oxide Yellow (Cl 77492), Iron Oxide Red (Cl 77491), Iron Oxide Black (Cl 77499). EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 50ml for $48.95 Comments: Same comments as for the untinted version. All the ingredients are good. There is one that you might want to be aware of: cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). This scores a 5 in EWG because of the risk of overdose. However, as the recommended daily allowance is 25g, it’s going to be very difficult to overdose through your moisturiser! I’m happy with this one. www.hellocharlie.com.au 38
Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Beeswax, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Raw Cacao Powder, Organic Cacao Butter EWG Skin Deep Rating: n/a Cost: 50g for $20.00 Comments: No bad ingredients in this, but do note that this is not a sunscreen. It’s not TGA approved, which means that you need to be very wary of using this as a sunscreen. Zinc is notorious for clumping together and leaving holes in your sunscreen (see this article). You need full sun protection when you’re out in the sun, so you need a TGA approved sunscreen. www.hellocharlie.com.au 39
Ingredients: Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano), Organic Bees Wax, Mineral Oil, Natural Lanolin, Coconut Oil, Australia Clay And Iron Oxides For Natural Colour. EWG Skin Deep Rating: 1 Low Hazard Cost: 50g for $19.95 Comments: Again, the ingredients in this look good, but this is not a sunscreen. It’s not TGA approved. Despite what Pete Evans says, there are excellent natural sunscreens available in Australia. We have the strictest sunscreen laws in the world, because we also have the highest skin cancer rates in the world. I like natural, but I also like properly formulated. Don’t rely on this one as a sunscreen. Otherwise, it’s good. www.hellocharlie.com.au 40
Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) oil, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Benzophenone-3, Theobroma Cocao (Cocoa Butter), *Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit extract, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Oil, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Oil, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candella) Wax, Tocopherol. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 7g for $5.95 Comments: I really like the non-SPF version of this pawpaw balm, but I don’t like this. There are definitely better choices for sunscreen ingredients than ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and benzophenone-3. I can’t understand why the manufacturer would choose such great, natural ingredients, and then choose to combine them with these two toxic sunscreen ingredients. I’ll be avoiding this one. www.hellocharlie.com.au 41
Ingredients: Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isoamyl Laurate, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Saccharide Isomerate, Sodium PCA, Silybum Marianum (Milk Thistle) Seed Extract, Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract, Tasmannia Lancelota (Mountain Pepper) Fruit/Leaf Extract, Polygonum Aviculare (Knotgrass) Extract, Rosa Canina (Rose Hip) Fruit Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Glycerin, Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract, Silica, Caprylyl Glycol, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Polysorbate 60, Cetearyl Glucoside, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/ VP Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid. 95.2% naturally derived ingredients. EWG Skin Deep Rating: 2 Low Hazard Cost: 60ml for $24.99 Comments: Personally, I avoid Titanium Dioxide as it irritates me, but this looks okay for an everyday moisturiser with SPF. www.hellocharlie.com.au 42
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Zinc Oxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isopropyl Myristate, Glycerin**, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Titanium Dioxide, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Pelargonium Graveolens (Cape Rose Geranium) Flower Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Cedrus Atlantica (Cedarwood) Bark Oil, Cymbopogon Validus (African Bluegrass) Oil, Chondrus Crispus Powder, Xanthan Gum, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Isostearic Acid, Stearic Acid, Alumina, Caprylhydroxamic Acid**, Caprylyl Glycol**, Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate**, Citric Acid, Citronellol^, Geraniol^, Linalool^. ^ From natural essential oils. * 100% Natural Australian Jojoba. ** Preservatives. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 60ml for $39.95 Comments: The ingredients in this look pretty good, too. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide together offer good full spectrum protection. Personally, I find titanium dioxide irritating, and I can’t wear it at all, so if you’ve got sensitive skin this might be an ingredient to watch out for. www.hellocharlie.com.au 43
Ingredients: Aqua, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Isododecane, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Octyl Salicylate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Glycerin, Arachidyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Caprylyl Glycol, Behenyl Alcohol, Benzimidazole Diamond Amidoethylcarbamoylpropyl Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil, Arachidyl Glucoside, Caffeine, Cetyl Alcohol, PEG-100 Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Acrylamide/Ammonium Acrylate Copolymer, Parfum, Punica Granatum Seed Oil, Butylene Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Dimethicone, Polyisobutene, Punica Granatum Extract, Disodium EDTA, Sorbic Acid, Adenosine, Polysorbate 20, Sorbitan Isostearate, Pyrus Malus Fruit Extract, Hydroxycitronellal, Citronellol, Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Ursolic Acid. EWG Skin Deep Rating: 4 Moderate Hazard Cost: 50ml for $35.00 Comments: PEGs, fragrance, dimethicone, polysorbate 20, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), octisalate, and hydroxycitronellal (synthetic perfume ingredient that scores a 7 in EWG). Too many problem ingredients in this one! www.hellocharlie.com.au 44

Multiple studies have shown a link between this ingredient and skin cancer. Add the perfume and phenoxyethanol, and that’s a definite no from me. www.hellocharlie.com.au 45

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 100ml for $74.00 Comments: I can see issues with this straight away – polysorbate 20, PEGs, BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene), gylceryl behenate (irritant and penetration enhancer), sodium hydroxide … no thanks! www.hellocharlie.com.au 46

There’s also phenoxyethanol and fragrance to further convince me that I wouldn’t use this one. www.hellocharlie.com.au 47
Disclaimer: I started Hello Charlie because I was concerned about some of the products that I was using on myself and my children. I’m no chemist, I’m just a mum who does plenty of research on products before I use them and before I’ll stock them at Hello Charlie. Lots of customers and friends ask me about products that I’d recommend, and what they should be looking for when buying for their own families. These guides are the results of my research and reading. I’d love to hear from you if you’ve read differently, or have opinions or great products that you’d like to share. Teaching yourself about better choices for our families and our environment is a journey, and I’d love for you to join me on it!
