1. WELCOME TO THE 8TH DCLDE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP The 8th International Workshop on Detection, Classification, Localization, and Density Estimation (DCLDE, http://sabiod.univ-tln.fr/DCLDE) of Marine Mammals using Passive Acoustics brings together researchers and engineers from universities, research institutes, government organizations, and industry, dealing with all aspects of acoustics, signal processing, pattern recognition, mathematics, and computer sciences applied to the study of the biology, ethology and ecology of marine mammals and also their environment and the potential effects of anthropogenic activities. The goal is to provide a forum for exchange of new results obtained from the latest advances in instrumentation and from the recent methods. Also this workshop will clearly encourage interdisciplinary approaches to create more knowledge on these species. The DCLDE International Workshop will comprise a prominent series of thematic sessions of oral and poster presentations. Abstracts will be published in proceedings to be made available to all registered participants on the first day of the Workshop. As the previous sessions of the DCLDE International Workshops, a challenge is offered to compare methods, algorithms, and results. This time will be awarded the team that will best detect and classify the underwater acoustic environment including sounds emitted by mysticeti and odontoceti species among other biological, natural and anthropogenic noises. 2. TOPICS The workshop will deal with engineering sciences including acoustics, signal processing, pattern recognition, mathematics, and computer sciences, dedicated to studies of marine mammals: - Detection of pulsed and harmonic sounds - Classification of diverse sounds including clicks, whistles and vocalizations - Localization of marine mammals - Estimation of population density - Acoustic propagation models - Innovative engineering including new materials and tools - Big data analytics - Study of sound generator of marine mammals - Underwater soundscapes: description of environmental acoustics and anthropogenic sounds 3. IMPORTANT DATES - Oct 1st, 2017: Opening of participant registration - Oct 1st, 2017: Opening of the data set for the Challenge - Feb 1st, 2018: Deadline for abstract submission - March 1st, 2018: Notification of abstract status (accepted or declined) - April 1st, 2018: Deadline for early registration - June 4: Thematic tutorial sessions (detection/classification, Localization, Density Estimation) - June 5, 6, 7, and 8: Oral presentations, posters, exhibitions 3

6. PARTICIPANTS Between 170 and 180 participants are expected at the 2018 DCLDE International Workshop. Researchers, engineers, PhD and Master students will be welcome to present their work on bioacoustics dedicated to the observations of marine mammals and of their marine environment. Several sessions will be scheduled for oral presentations and posters. Also, companies will exhibit their services and materials. 7. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM The 2018 DCLDE International Workshop will be organized in several appointments: 7.1. THEMATIC TUTORIAL SESSIONS Three thematic tutorial sessions will be organized on Monday 4th. The objective is to present the new theory, the current methods and the software used by the researchers. During 3-4 hours, overall presentation and examples on real recorded sounds will illustrate the knowledge, the advantages/inconvenient, and the use of these methods. The 3 sessions are: - Machine learning for Bioacoustics, Bayesian and Deep Learning, organized by Prof. H. Glotin, LSIS - Localization of cetaceans using passive acoustics, organized by Dr. C. Laplanche, INP-ENSAT - A primer on density estimation from passive acoustic data, organized by Dr. L. Thomas, Dr. T. Marques, and Dr. D. Harris, St Andrews 7.2. THEMATIC SESSIONS FOR ORAL PRESENTATIONS From the 5th to the 8th of June, four sessions will be dedicated to oral presentations, 2 during the morning and 2 during the afternoon. The different topics will be: detection, localization, classification, density estimation, challenge (results obtained on the 2018 DCLDE dataset). Each session will be animated by a chairman. Speakers will have 15 min to present their work, and then, the participants will have 5 min for questions. 7.3. CHALLENGE As the previous sessions of the DCLDE International Workshops, a challenge is offered to compare methods, algorithms, and results. For this 2018 DCLDE International Workshop, the challenge will be dedicated to the detection and classification of different mysticeti and odontoceti species among other biological, natural and anthropogenic noises. The dataset will be segmented in 3 parts: training, validation and test. Only the test part will be used to determine the winner of this challenge. The dataset will be open in July 2017, and rules for participants will be detailed on the internet website of the 2018 DCLDE International Workshop. The challenge is organized by Prof. O. Adam and Prof. H. Glotin. 7.4. POSTERS Participants could also present their results by poster. A specific space, close to the amphitheater, will be dedicated to this poster exhibition. Posters should not exceed 90 cm in width and 120 cm in height. Short oral Sessions (2min) will be held so that the authors can present their poster orally. Every day, specific sessions will be scheduled to allow attendees to visit the posters. 6
7.5. INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION An industrial exhibition is organized to allow companies that work in underwater acoustics, bioacoustics, signal processing, and pattern recognition. Companies will come to show their professional services and their materials. Demonstrations could be proposed if they do not disrupt the conference and are safe for all participants. 8. ICE-BREAKING COCKTAIL The ice-breaking cocktail will take place on the 24th floor of the Zamanski Tour at the University, from 7pm to 11pm. Participants are warmly invited to come and enjoy the view of Paris and chat over a drink. During this event, we would like to welcome the artist Matt Schultz who made the monumental sculpture of a humpback whale. His venue must be confirmed. 8.2. CONFERENCE BANQUET On Thursday 7th, we will invite the participants for a diner cocktail and dancing party on the Seine river, from 9pm to 2am. We will welcome Camille Hanson who is the author of The Sacrifice of Giants, an ecologically-sensitive choreographic production of dance, video and photography honoring the natural behavior of the inhabitants of our oceans. Her venue must be confirmed. 9. REGISTRATION All participants must register to access the conference.
