The final instalment of Shaynna Blaze’s chat with Belinda Glynn of OnceWas and Ubantu
Studio looks at problems faced by the fashion industry, Glynn’s Australian design influence,
and how the designer and businesswoman unwinds and relaxes.

Shaynna Blaze: Have there been people through your career or people that Shaynna Blaze: I wonder if they should have a ‘lost skill fair’ in fashion,
you look up to who have inspired not just your design, but how you live and how pattern making and design because if we lose those, we lose our Australian fashion
you want to approach design? industry.
Belinda Glynn: Well, Belinda Glynn: Absolutely. I mean it is definitely shrinking in terms of the
to be completely honest, as I manufacturing side. That’s almost a global problem because even in China, the
was saying, it’s a very, very younger generation don’t want to work in a factory where they are on constant
competitive industry. So, I deadlines working for a clothing manufacturer and they have to build out all those
haven’t actually come skills. They would rather be manufacturing iPhones. It’s a simple task and there’s no
across anyone in the deadline. They just turn up, and it’s iPhone after iPhone after iPhone – so much
industry that I could say is a easier than working in the clothing factories. The whole industry could be in
mentor. There are obviously jeopardy in a few years’ time.
                 legendary designers that
have influenced me and Shaynna Blaze: Do you unconsciously see a lot of Australian design coming
inspired me; all the greats, to some of your looks and how you approach your collections?
but in terms of mentors in
the industry, I personally Belinda Glynn: Oh yeah, I’m more than half Australian now, and I do think
haven’t come across any, that there’s a lot of similarities between the lifestyle in South Africa and the lifestyle
which is pretty sad to say and that’s why I feel like there’s a different way of doing in Australia. They’re both very relaxed and laid back and that influences the way I
things. design because everything you design needs to be comfortable. I like to design
I feel like I’m finally at a point in my career where I have the freedom to inspire change things you can pull on in the dark and walk out the door and know you’re going to
in that regard and to start the conversation about collaboration. In fashion we were look good and you’re going to feel confident and comfortable. It is that laid-back
all taught ‘don’t share your ideas’. You’ve got to be the first to market with your feel, while allowing the wearer to bring out their own style with it. I think that’s a bit
designs and so you keep it under wraps. It’s all a big secret and that really doesn’t of both: the Australian and the South African influence.
breed mentorship or collaboration. But there’s a new breed of young blood coming Shaynna Blaze: For someone who loves design, loves fashion and wants to
through and they are being really innovative and they’re doing things in a new way be getting into the industry – what are some of the crucial skills that you think one
and they’re a lot more open to sharing ideas, which I think is really exciting because I should possess?
do see that the industry needs to shift and change. And I can see it starting to.
Belinda Glynn: Well, I can only really go by my experience and a lot of my
Shaynna Blaze: Have you seen other big companies that have really experience came from working for small companies, because in a small company
encouraged mentorships? you learn everything that is invaluable if you want to have your own brand at some
Belinda Glynn: Well, not so much in Melbourne. It is a very, very cutthroat stage. I think working for smaller brands and being exposed to various facets of the
industry and I think it’s the new, young, small boutique brands that are doing business, rather than with big retailers where you’ll learn one job and that’s pretty
things differently. It’s not the big old-school guys. much it for a good portion of your career, I think that would be invaluable. It is
I think the customer is also getting a bit more aware of things. The whole question about getting a well-rounded experience from the ground up in the industry.
of sustainability needs an answer from the industry. So, everyone’s starting to look Shaynna Blaze: What you do outside of work that makes you a better
at different ways to be sustainable, where you’ve got to collaborate, so I think it’s person at work? What are some things that inspire and relax you?
definitely the way of the future.
Belinda Glynn: Well, I’m a big believer in meditation nowadays. I struggle
Shaynna Blaze: What do you think could be the turning point of trying to get with it, a lot of people struggle with it, but I just noticed if I don’t have my 20 minutes
