   6 Epiphany

                 The Sixth Sunday of Epiphany
Blessings and curses abound on the sixth
Sunday after Epiphany. We would do well to
listen closely to whom the “blessed ares” and
the “woe tos” are directed and to find our place
in the crowd among those who desire to touch
Jesus. The risen Christ stands among us in the
mystery of the holy supper with an invitation to
live in him, and offers power to heal us all.

WELCOME TO
                 MOUNT CROSS EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH
As a community of faith, we strive to embody Jesus Christ’s radical love for all people.

We welcome and embrace the unique gifts and diversity of all, and invite you to journey
with us as we experience God’s inclusive love.

Come, whoever you are, however you feel, for whatever reasons you are here, come!

If this is your first time worshipping with us, know that you are welcome to participate in worship as fully
as you wish. In this bulletin, you will find all that you need for worship: liturgy, hymns (some are printed
in the bulletin, others are found in the cranberry or blue hymnals in your pew), and congregational
responses. Your presence is a gift to Mount Cross.

We encourage families with children of all ages to be present for the entire time of worship. We welcome
their wonderful noises that at times fill this space. We do have a nursery available that is located down
the stairs at the back of our fellowship area, but it is not staffed, so parents must remain with their
                                                  children.

                               Holy Communion at Mount Cross:
At Mount Cross, the Lord’s Supper is the gift of God for the people of God. Through this
meal, God fills us with mercy and forgiveness, love and grace, and empowers us to love
and serve our neighbors. Come eat and drink. We have both wine and juice options, as
well as regular bread and gluten free bread.
Please look to the Presiding Pastor and Assisting Minister for direction on how to proceed
                               with communion. Thank you!

An asterisk (*) indicates that the congregation is invited to stand during worship.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
SONG OF PREPARATION: “Kindle a Flame”

*CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, T one God, who creates us, redeems us,
           and calls us by name.
    C Amen.
P Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another.

    Silence is kept for reflection

    P Most merciful God,
C We confess that we have sinned against you and your beloved
children. We have turned our faces away from your glory when it
did not appear as we expected. We have rejected your word when
it made us confront ourselves. We have failed to show hospitality
to those you called us to welcome. Accept our repentance for the
things we have done and the things we have left undone. For the
sake of Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us and lead us,
that we may bathe in the glory of your Son born among us, and
reflect your love for all creation. Amen.
P Rejoice in this good news: In T Christ Jesus, your sins are forgiven.
You are descendants of the Most High, adopted into the household of
Christ, and inheritors of eternal life. Live as freed and forgiven
           children of God.
    C Amen.

FIRST READING: Jeremiah 17:5-10 from NRSV
   5
Thus says the LORD: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere
flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the LORD. 6They shall be like a
shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the
parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7Blessed are those
who trust in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8They shall be like a tree planted by
water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and
its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not
cease to bear fruit. 9The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse— who can
understand it? 10I the LORD test the mind and search the heart, to give to all
according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings.

L The Word of the Lord.
                            C Thanks be to God.

PSALM 1 All sing refrain; Worship Assistant Sings Verses

Happy indeed are they who refuse thew ay of evil, nor walk the road of
sinners, nor join the mockers of God. Joy shall be in the hearts of those who
delight in the law of God, for they recite the law, they speak it day and night.
   REFRAIN
They are like green trees that grow by clear flowing waters, they bear their
fruit in due season, their leaves fade not, they prosper. It is not so for all, not
so with evil doers, they blow like chaff in the wind, they fall by the weight of
   the truth.
   REFRAIN
God upholds the just, God knows the way of the righteous, but the evils ones
shall perish, shall perish by their deeds.

SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 from NRSV
   12
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you
say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection of the
dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then
our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. 15We are
even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he
raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.
   16
For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17If Christ has
not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18Then those
also who have died in Christ have perished. 19If for this life only we have
hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20But in fact Christ has
been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.

L The Word of the Lord.
                           C Thanks be to God.

*GOSPEL: Luke 6:17-26 from NRSV

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the Sixth Chapter
C Glory to you, O Lord.

   17
[Jesus] came down with [the twelve] and stood on a level place, with a great
crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem,
and the coast of Tyre and Sidon.18They had come to hear him and to be healed of
their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19And
all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and
healed all of them. 20Then he looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you
who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21“Blessed are you who are hungry
now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
   22
“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you,
and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice in that day and leap for
joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did
to the prophets. 24“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your
consolation. 25“Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you
who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26“Woe to you when all speak
well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.”

P The Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to you, O Christ.

*HYMN OF THE DAY: “Lift Every Voice & Sing” RED 841

February 13, 2022 Page 5
*CONFESSION OF FAITH: “Apostles’ Creed”

A God has made us His people through our Baptism into Christ. Living
together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.
C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I
believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived
by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. On the third day, He rose again. He
ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I
believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of
the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*PRAYERS
A Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all
   people according to their needs.

Each petition of the prayers, will end with: “Lord, in your mercy” and
the congregation will respond with: “Hear our prayer”.
P Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we
pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
   C Amen.

*THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

P The Lord be with you.
   C And also with you.
   P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P It is indeed right...join their unending hymn:

P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and
gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and
eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of
           me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all
to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for
you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the
           remembrance of me.

*THE LORD’S PRAYER ACS pg. 39

A Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
C Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our
daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against
us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the
kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
         Amen.
