2021 GALLERY NIGHT ITHACA A MONTHLY SERIES PRESENTED BY July Gallery Shows & Locations 1. CAP ArtSpace Tompkins Center for History & Culture | 110 N. Tioga St. OPEN Gallery Night: 5pm to 8pm. Hours: Thurs to Sat, 10am to 5pm. After the War - Paintings by Suzanne Onodera In “After the War,” local painter Suzanne Onodera shares scenes of family lore and national history as glimpsed through the luminous haze of memory Onodera’s terrains are characteristically devoid of human signs, but in this new series, structures and figures begin to break through the ether. They have been called forth from recently uncovered photographs, documents, and oral traditions that bear witness to two sides of the art- ist’s family and their experiences—alike and unalike—around the period of Japanese internment during World War II Learn more at ArtsPartner.org. We thank our annual CAP ArtSpace spon- sor, the Tompkins Trust Company. The Community Arts Partnership thanks our generous year-round CAP ArtSpace sponsor, the Tompkins Trust Company. 2. Ithaca Marriott Downtown 120 E. Green St. Sheryl D. Sinkow (Sheryl D. Sinkow Photography) Same Journey Different Paths My challenge in making photographs has always been to express a sense of movement with the stillness of the medium. The opportunity to be part of another culture, to attempt to understand differences and similarities and how they relate to my own life, has been a driving force. Early studies in Anthropology taught me how to be a “participant observ- er” and learning how to use the camera further enhanced my ability to “see” and share. 3. 7. State of the Art Gallery 120 W. Martin Luther King, Jr. / State St. soagithaca.org | facebook.com/stateoftheartgallery 607-277-1626 EMERGENCE Ethel Vrana states: “All of the paintings in my show were made during the pandemic. Unable to visit with my family or go any- where, I kept connected by evoking in my paintings familiar images of people, places, and things that are a part of my daily life as a painter. I have presented them in a variety of abstract compositions.” Ms. Vrana will be at the gallery Thursday, July 1. Reception for the artist is July 9, 5-8pm. There is curbside parking and the gallery has ADA accessibility. We are abiding by health department rules regarding masks, distancing, and limiting the number of viewers in the gallery at one time. 8. Hilton Garden Inn 130 E. Seneca St.| www.ithaca.hgi.com Tony Serviente, Recent Works Artist Statement: I work in two primary realms of glass technique. In my kiln work I have been exploring glass, geometry and heat for 30 years. I of- ten begin with a precise pattern based on lines and spaces that I then modify in various ways. I enjoy the metaphor of rigid plans being made that external processes tilt, twist, warp, spindle or otherwise deform. My stained glass work focuses on imagery that is unexpected in the genre. I like to create windows that are unexpected and provoke questions. All of my work is a physical manifestation of my energy and of my interest in the universe. I am inspired by Quantum theories, the bubbles on my morning coffee, and everything in between. Forty years into my glass journey, I am not even slightly tempted to ask “Are we there yet."
