Regional Law Firm Management Forum – 2018 Keynote Presentations Singapore and the Emerging Global Legal Community The delivery of legal services is undergoing a metamorphosis. It’s not a local, domestic, or regional change that law is experiencing but a global one. Law has long been provincial by design. Lawyers practiced within proscribed jurisdictions. The delivery of legal services was dominated by law firms and lawyers. That is changing. Legal delivery now involves legal, technological, and process/project management expertise. Capital is also a factor as are legal regulations that fail to distinguish between legal practice and the delivery of legal services (the business of law). Lawyers and law firms face new competition—not only from other firms but also from corporate legal departments, the Big Four, and other “law companies.” Understanding these developments is a vital starting point for an examination of how your firm can differentiate itself in a competitive, global marketplace. Mark Cohen | Legal Mosaic Mark is a global thought leader in the legal industry. He is the CEO of Legal Mosaic (www.legalmosaic.com) a legal business consultancy; Distinguished Fellow at Northwestern University Law School; regular contributor to Forbes where he has a column on the global legal marketplace; and sought-after international speaker. Mark was recently appointed by the Singapore Academy of Law to serve as its inaugural LIFTED “Catalyst-in-Residence” Mark has focused on “the business of law” since the turn of the millennium. Prior to that, he was a civil trial lawyer. During his years of practice he was a highly decorated Assistant United States Attorney, BigLaw Partner, founder of a multi-city national litigation boutique, outside General Counsel, and federally appointed Receiver of an international aviation parts company conducting business on four continents. Mark was an early adopter of legal tech as well as fixed-price billing, flex-time, and an agile workforce. Business Development and the Future Firm: Utilising BD to Develop Strategy and innovation Business Development departments in professional services firms are largely underutilised. Business developers and marketers know the business of a firm’s clients, know the macroeconomic environment and know the internal structures of a firm. What better tools and knowledge to create the firm of the future? This presentation reinforces the idea that firms that utilise their BD departments to develop strategic plans and respond to innovative changes in the market will be winning in the quest to develop a profitable and sustainable firm. Debra Filippin | Pinsent Masons Debra Filippin is the Head of Business Development, Asia Pacific at global law firm Pinsent Masons. She has worked in business development for global law firms in the Asia Pacific for more than 15 years. Prior to this role she spent almost 10 years at K&L Gates as the firm’s Director of Business Development, Asia Pacific. Before this time Debra spent 10 years in Tokyo where she headed up the BD and marketing department for Linklaters and before that, Lovells (now Hogan Lovells). Debra holds a Masters of Laws from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne. In 2015 she completed the Asialink Leaders Program run by Asialink Business. She is passionate about strategy and culture, and the need to constantly challenge traditional ways of working and thinking in order to bring about necessary change.

Legal Ops – Friends Not Foes Corporate Legal Teams are under tremendous pressure to deliver a better, more cost effective service to enable their businesses to thrive. As a result they are embracing the concept of Legal Operations and are increasingly looking for their law firms to help them beyond just solving legal issues. Legal operations professionals are seeking advice on systems and processes, managing a complex portfolio of matters, project management, vendor management, technology adoption and demonstrating value to their organisations. Law firms that can help their in-house counsel clients shine will be rewarded. Sumith will share a case study of a client project and talk about the growing trend of Legal Operations.
