SORG Modular Training Series Anesthesia, Preprosthetic & Dental Implants History In 1989, twenty surgeons came together in Strasbourg to study and promote the use of rigid fixation techniques. The organization they formed became known as the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group, or SORG. The society has grown internationally, and in 2007, the North American SORG was founded. Goals ■ Strengthen the discipline of surgery through education and research. ■ Provide educational content that meets the needs of the training program, resident, and private practitioner. ■ Facilitate relationships between teaching programs, private practitioners, sub-specialty experts, and technical experts to improve patient care. 2
Modular Training Series The Modular Training Series is designed to improve and maintain the skills of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in a series of weekend courses. The modules are divided into four categories with training events held nationally twice per year. SORG Modular Training Series Anesthesia, Preprosthetic & Dental Implants Purpose ■ Module 3 focuses on developing the knowledge and skills of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the key areas of medical evaluation, outpatient anesthesia, preprosthetic surgery and implant surgery. ■ The course is designed to increase the participants’ knowledge and skills in patient evaluation and management, anesthetic agents and techniques, management techniques in special populations, evaluation and management of complications, and anesthetic medical emergencies. ■ In addition, the participant will learn the techniques and skills necessary to manage a broad range of patients including implant placement in the esthetic zone, posterior and full arch reconstruction, grafting and site development techniques for both soft and hard tissues, and the skills necessary to treatment plan and assist the restorative dentist in their prosthetic rehabilitation. 4
Learning Objectives At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to: ■ Understand the principles and concepts of medical evaluation and its application to systemic diseases as they relate to outpatient anesthesia. ■ Utilize varying anesthetic agents and techniques to provide safe outpatient ambulatory anesthesia. ■ Understand the special needs and techniques necessary for pediatric, geriatric, and special needs patient populations. ■ Understand anesthetic emergencies and complications and be able to apply those skills to scenario based morbidity and mortality patients. ■ Gain the understanding and skills necessary for implant treatment planning and prosthetic considerations in implant rehabilitation. ■ Understand and apply the techniques of grafting of both hard and soft tissues in the site development for prosthetic and implant rehabilitation. ■ Understand the concepts and to be able to utilize them in the placement of implants in the esthetic zone and the associated soft tissue management. ■ Understand and apply the basic principles to facilitate placement and implant reconstruction in posterior, multi-tooth, and full arch implant rehabilitation. 5
