their inspiring spaces and creative processes. On the Trail you’ll discover
an extraordinary range of artists and art practices, nestled amongst the
stunning natural beauty of the Armadale hills environment.
As you’re making your way around the area, look out for the blue
banners and Trail signage to help you find the studios. Make the most
of your trip by pausing for refreshments at one of our local cafés!

My work is dry pastel realism referencing Western Australia. But more than that my
ambition is to capture the feeling, impact and emotional connection I have with the
vast landscape. From the forests of our southwest to the waters of Ningaloo much of
our landscape is on a vast scale of immense beauty so much of my works manifest
as larger than life artworks. It’s an amazing feeling to create artwork that take the
viewer on a journey through the landscape.

I am a driven, self-taught artist and I have painted all my life. The Pilbara with vivid
colour vistas, intrigued me and I enjoy how the light dances across the canvas when
painting landscapes. Promotion of recent works has lead me to form a group of like-
minded artists - Art and Sol. We have successfully exhibited locally over the last two
years. It has metamorphosed into what I have envisaged.

I am an Anglo African Australian now living happily in Mt Richon where I am an
enthusiastic member of the local arts community. I have travelled widely and lived in
Europe, all over Africa and Asia; witnessing shadowy forests, barren deserts, green
hills and purple valleys as well as the people inhabiting these lands. I am fascinated
with the human condition and the land they call home and I am driven to paint an
eclectic range of subjects with impressionistic gusto.

As an artist my work is constantly inspired by the unique light, colours, contrasts
and scale of untouched wilderness landscapes. I am passionate about expressing
through my work both the visual and emotional sense of a place, and the impression
it leaves on me as an artist and an individual. My body of work focuses on expressing
these impressions through exploring the dialogue between landscape and the soul.
I aim to describe, through my work, not only the sublime beauty of these remote
areas, but also the deep connection, rare stillness and sense of infinity they possess.

Various mediums from oil to charcoal
I have always loved drawing and painting and find the Australian landscape very
inspiring. My love of nature and animals influences my artwork and trying to capture
the light is always fascinating to me. I use a variety of mediums from oils to charcoal,
each having a different effect. Over the years I have benefited from many classes and
workshops with renowned artists and now take a class for the Armadale Society of
Artists sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm with others.

My name is John (Ned) Kelly, Ned is a nickname that has stayed with me most of
my life and I prefer it over John. My choice is acrylic on canvas as my medium. My
current body of work has been The Stockman Series. In each painting, I set out to
show the viewer a different perspective from the ‘norm’, sometimes very close up,
different times of the day etc, but always endeavouring to tell a story that one can
immerse themselves into. Where I can introduce humour into a painting I will not
hesitate and do so regularly.

Botanical printing and natural dyeing on textiles
Botanical printing and natural dyeing are the inspiration behind my creations. Getting
beautiful prints and colours from foliage collected from my surroundings is my
passion as a textile artist. As the environment is very important to me, I like using
repurposed and up-cycled treasures to make unique and one off pieces. The fact
that I can exhibit within the unique walls of the Waterwheel Gallery just adds to the
message of sustainable beauty that I am trying to give.

In the early 70s, the nuns at St Mary’s didn’t quite know what to do with an inquisitive
Ballardong Noongar boy. Putting me in a corner with some paper and a crayon
seemed the easiest way to shut me up. That crayon turned into a paintbrush I haven’t
put down since. I paint abstract landscapes. Acrylics and ochre create stories of
boodja (country), the interconnecting elements of the land and the pathways forged
by my ancestors from two cultures.

I am a figurative artist/educator with a visual arts career spanning over thirty years.
Recently chosen as Armadale Festival Artist of 2021, I am proud to be represented
by the beautiful Waterwheel Galley of Bedfordale. Working in many media on many
surfaces, I produce unique hand painted wearable objects and limited edition giftware
(The shoes are the now well-known Sneasel Sneakers). Besides the object d’art, I
work with gutta on paper, nib drawings, hand-painted ceramics and paint.

A resident in the Kimberley for a decade, I started using pearl and gold dust, together
with the outback ochres portraying and celebrating the uniqueness of the Australian
North landscape. As an artist, I am always respectful of the way I interpret land and all
its cultural spirituality. My work honours the isolation and the texture of the landscape
in a contemporary interpretation. Here against the natural walls of the Waterwheel
Gallery, my work merges with the earth itself.

Abstract art and textile bags
I have a foot in both painting and textile camps. My paintings are abstract and
intuitive, and include layered surfaces that have surprises when viewed close up.
Also, making textile bags is a functional, creative outlet for me, which are the result of
various textile studies and workshops. I follow other artists like Ric Burkitt (WA) and
Judy Woods (NZ). I have a major in painting and a minor in textiles and fibre arts from
Curtin University and am currently taking units in Fashion and Design at TAFE.

I have been working, studying, lecturing and teaching in the areas of textiles and
ceramics for 40 years. I live in a beautiful bushland setting in Bedfordale, overlooking
the waters of the Wungong Dam. My art practice has a strong focus on obtaining
colour from the Australian plants and minerals. I have always been fascinated by
the detail of nature. I am fascinated by the combination of natural dyeing, flora and
geological make-up which provides me with never-ending creative inspiration.

I am a woodturner and my interest in this craft commenced when I did an eight
week course in 2007. I am a member of the Gosnells Woodturning Group which is
a member of the Woodturners Association of Western Australia. Since joining I have
won many prizes. I like to turn items which test my abilities and skills and I am always
looking for new challenges. A plain piece of wood when turned and finished can be
transformed into a beautiful piece of artwork.

I am very fortunate to create my art and run watercolour workshops from my home
studio in Bedfordale, where I am surrounded by inspiration. I am also a member of
the Armadale Society of Artists. I have been creating art as long as I can remember
and I especially love painting animals in watercolour and acrylics. I am regularly
commissioned to paint pet portraits. I like working with texture and colour and I have
an affinity with nature and wildlife.

I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. Acrylic painting both abstract
& contemporary pieces. I enjoy design and I have created commission pieces
allowing me to share my love of abstract art. My passion for teaching and inspiring
others to experiment with art, led my partner and I to open Creative Soul Sessions
in Kelmscott. Our studio caters for adults and children and provides a fun, relaxed
space to meet others while creating and socialising.

Apart from my time spent in the army and steel industry, I have spent most of my life
drawing cartoons and illustrating. As a freelance cartoonist my work has appeared
in major magazines in Australia and overseas. I have been fortunate enough to have
won four Stanley awards presented annual by the Australian Cartoonist Association.
With encouragement from my partner Sandy, I have recently turned my hand to
acrylic painting and together we have created surf boards and wall murals.

Throughout my life painting has been a love and a hobby. Since 2015 I have
explored and developed my art through multiple painting mediums. I am primarily
a landscape and seascape artist, intent on capturing nature’s contrasting beauty
and mood. I enjoy incorporating items of nature in my toolkit, recycling materials
and experimenting in processes. My work has been exhibited through the Armadale
Society of Artists (ASA) events and private home exhibitions. In 2019, I received a
highly commended award at the ASA Annual Exhibition.

In 2017, I decided to pursue my lifelong interest in visual arts. The Armadale Society
of Artists workshops provided the stimulus and support to develop my skills. I

capturing the charismatic personalities of birds and animals; and the beauty of the
coastline. My preferred mediums are watercolour and acrylic, and my passion for
teaching has allowed me to share my creativity through children’s art lessons.

Australian landscape painter, plein air and studio work
Visiting Broome in 1968 inspired me for painting. Although I use all mediums, I now
paint mainly Australian landscapes and the Kimberley using acrylics. The colours
and atmosphere of the Kimberley are an exciting challenge to capture on canvas. My
works have been sold nationally and internationally. I enjoy plein air painting capturing
the light that a reference photo does not have. I am a member of the Armadale
Society of Artists and I have had solo and group exhibitions in Broome and Perth. I
regularly conduct Australian landscape workshops.

Born in Gibraltar, I emigrated to Australia in 1994. After several years of not practicing
my art, I become involved again five years ago and have started experimenting with
new techniques. I love to paint intuitively expressing my feelings through colour and
brush marks. My main inspiration are dancers. I love showing movement and want
the audience to feel the painting. I am now a teacher with the Armadale Society of
Artists, teaching in acrylics and mixed media. But most importantly I love to inspire
others to create.

Originally from the UK, I am based in Kelmscott and since becoming an Armadale
Society of Artists member in 2019 I have been exploring my childhood passion for
visual art. I have developed my love of portraiture - humans, animals and birds and
often use bright bold colours and lines to express what I see. My two dimensional
paintings sometimes have a three dimensional effect, also I like to give an insight
into the subjects character by researching mannerisms, expressions and stories, to
incorporate into my artwork.

Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya (SMV) is a non-profit institution whose vision is to be a
centre for artistic and scientific learning, in keeping with holistic values. Based on
the principle of ‘art, just for the love of it!’ and serving humanity through arts, culture
and education, this institute was founded by our late patron Swami Shantanand
Saraswati. Members of SMV who are our teachers and practicing artists at this

able to browse through two rooms of an eclectic mix of art. I paint and draw in all
types of mediums and subjects, although graphic art is what I tend to gravitate to. I

it doesn’t, that is what art is all about for me, just having fun. I have been a member

I am a self-taught artist, who began working with acrylics in 2015 while living in the
Pilbara, as a means of capturing the beautiful, local scenery. In 2019 I opened my
studio in the Perth hills and became a member of the Armadale Society of Artists.
Inspired by different sources; colours, people, animals, photographs, buildings,
dance costumes and textures, I enjoy creating artwork that entices the viewer to
look differently at every day subjects. I paint using different themes and styles, so my
studio has something to please most art lovers and well worth a visit.

I feel very privileged to be a full time artist making a living from my passion. Exhibiting
since 1994 I am honoured to be the recipient of 20 art awards and to have 48 solo
exhibitions to my name. Achievements I could hardly imagine when I started. My
work is about connecting with the inner self. For me this means painting with honesty
and authenticity straight from the heart. As an abstract expressionist painter my focus
is on connecting with my deepest unconscious self to express my deepest feelings.
My hope is that people will see their own deepest feelings in my paintings and
wonder what life is really about.

I am the artist behind Life Laid Bear. It is a quirky collection of illustrations, paintings,
comic drawings and digital works about bears who portray moments of daily life that
are sometimes funny, sometimes serious or just downright strange. Caught between
art and comic, cute and aesthetically pleasing, illustration and analogy, Life Laid Bear
artworks are a bit different. I am also obsessed with drawing mixed media portraits
that are influenced by fairy tales from childhood.

Colour, texture and pattern are my passion and I love the tactile quality of textiles.
Inspiration is often drawn from my Roleystone bush environment, especially details of
bark, leaves, stones etc. I enjoy the idea of making desirable objects from offcuts or
found materials while reducing waste destined for landfill. This year, I’ve been exploring
some new techniques through online workshops but my work ranges from framed
pieces, hand printed scarves, bags and cushions, cards, covered journals and more.

I am a self-taught artist using many different mediums in my artwork. I have attended
many various workshops over many years, to advance my knowledge and skills,
originally being a hand embroiderer. My love of textiles and mixed media is shown
in all my work, and I like to use both new and recycled fabrics. More recently I have
been working with beautiful merino wools to create needle-felted framed pieces. As I
like the element of surprise, you never know what I will do next, but barely a day goes
by without a sewing or felting needle in my hand.

Little Studio in the Garden is nestled into the Roleystone hills in a unique 1937 vintage
cottage with a small garden studio. Look for a white picket fence on a rustic block
covered with gum and karri trees set in a cottage style garden. This is my seventh year
participating in the Armadale Hills Arts Trail and am excited to show you my latest
artwork and products. I paint in oils and acrylic and love painting en plein air with a
landscape or native flora and fauna theme. This year I am also including a sneak look
at my friend’s gallery inside my home. Hope to see you, I will put the kettle on.

This is my fourth year being involved in the Arts Trail. One of the things that I enjoy
is meeting so many great people and sharing my creations with them. I work with
a wide variety of local timbers including those native to Western Australia, as
well as fruit wood sourced locally. Being retired now, I spend many hours in my
workshop making items as requested. This year there has seen quite an interest in
jewellery boxes and yarn bowls as well as pens, other bowls, platters and items for
entertaining.

I have been a practising artist now for about 30 years and just recently I have
discovered the joy and excitement of resin and polymer clay, first of all in my artwork,
and with acrylic and ink in between layers of resin is very exciting. I then found the
beauty of jewellery making and sculpture with polymer clay. Life is full of joy and
discovery for me and a never ending voyage of new ideas and techniques. I love
passing on my techniques and ideas to other interested people, so I carry out regular
classes at my studio.
