O nce upon a time in a remote part of the world, an owl was born, but not just any owl. An owl who as a youngling had big dreams and grandiose plans for himself. This owl wasn’t just anyone, he was and still is Ow-Li. When he grew up he quickly realized that he wasn’t quite like all the other owls, an outcast who could not fly due to his abnormally large body size, and who also had the ability to speak. During his early years, he felt that his home was no longer the right place for him. He packed his bags, waved goodbye to his family, and started his long journey towards a country he had heard so many fantastic stories about, Sweden. When he arrived, he ended up in the hands of Nextstep, where he found his true purpose in life. A place he could work closely with the team while being able to speak freely, meet like-minded humans who never say no to a warm hug, take dance classes and of course, attend the annual career fair. Believe it or not, but Ow-Li is not as dumb as he may seem. Throughout the history of mankind, owls have been identified as a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. He’s constantly seeking new ways of learning in literature in the hope of trying to catch up all the education he had missed out back home. Did you know that the bow tie was Ow-Li’s idea? One of Nextstep’s main characteristics is the red bow tie. He felt that the team needed an accessory that was elegant, looked professional and easily recognized by others. It is worn by the entire team of Nextstep and last but not least by our special member Ow-Li. Although this year, Nextstep is turning 25 and Ow-Li has decided to make our bow tie even more fancy. He has chosen a golden bow tie to celebrate the 25 successful years of arranging the career fair. A golden color that will represent success, celebration, and commitment. He wishes to see all of you at the fair in February celebrating Nextsteps’ 25th birthday together with us. 10

Nextstep in the rear-view mirror with Johan Larsson W hen Johan started his studies in Jönköping in 1992 the career fair was called “Kontaktdagarna”. He immediately found the project very interesting and quickly got involved. During the following year he got to be the project manager for the event. At this time, the project group consisted of only four team members with students from JIBS and HLK. The students from HLK: s programme MKV made a list of companies they were interested in, and was in charge of making the magazine. The project team received a lot of help from the board of JUNIKON, known as JSA today. In total, 25 people oversaw the fair, which also included hosting the event. The project manager in 1992, Kajsa, were a big help for Johan. He turned to her many times for advice for his upcoming year as project manager in 1994. 12
This became Johan’s introduction to Nextstep. It is very interesting and rewarding to learn how to Kontaktdagarna was a two-day event. The first day take responsibility. You invite the companies, you was the career fair, followed by the second day that make sure they get a good impression of the school was dedicated to contact calls with the companies and students. The contact call is an opportunity that is extremely valuable, everyone should try it. 13

Interview with Jonas von Essen, World Memory Champion How did you go from having a “normal memory” to where you are today? It all started when I read a book about memory techniques. I was amazed by how easy it was and the gigantic amount of information that suddenly seemed possible to remember. I soon discovered that there was a “Swedish Memory Championship” and decided to participate. This motivated me to practise the techniques very intensely for some months and I went on becoming the Swedish Champion that year! What are the most common memory mistakes people make? Most people don’t use any particular technique, or if they do it’s often quite random and nothing they have been thinking through a lot. Just trying some strategies out and thinking about it can bring great improvements. I think that one of the worst things that people do (and that I myself did before) is to repeat something loads of times just before a test or an exam. That might help you pass the exam but most of the knowledge will be soon gone. One of the simplest principles for getting things into the long-term memory is to spread out the learning as much as possible. The optimal way of doing this is called “spaced repetition”. Google it! What methods/techniques would you recommend to students who are aiming to improve their memory? As I mentioned, “spaced repetition” is a cornerstone for improving your long-term memory. Other than that: visual memory techniques! Learning to convert knowledge into images and associating these images to each other or to different places (known as memory palaces) makes learning insanely much more effective. This of course requires some getting used to and good learning resources. I have recorded some videos covering the basics freely available on my webpage (www.jonasvonessen.se) and YouTube. I have also written a book called “Så får du ett superminne” which can be found in most bigger libraries. Just try out the techniques, even if it takes some time to learn them you will get back all that time and plenty more through learning much faster and easier for the rest of your life. Name: Camilla Ljunggren Age: 35 Profession: Innovation expert and founder of several companies including Pluring and Business Challenge 18
Interview with Camilla Ljunggren, Entrepreneur and JIBS Alumni Tell us a little about yourself, what do you do for a living? My name is Camilla Ljunggren I’m an entrepreneur and a JIBS Alumni. Mostly known for the brand and hanger Pluring. Today, Pluring is produced in its own factories, where the company works in collaborates on product development and prototypes across a variety of fields. Pluring operates as a family company where I am, above all, involved in strategy, product innovation and design. I have also worked with business development for small- to medium-sized companies and have been a board member both in incorporated companies and charitable organizations. Together with some of the Swedish industry’s senior executives and leading companies, I took the initiative to found the Business Challenge, today one of Sweden’s largest startup competitions and business development programs for startups. Together with my colleague I have also founded Innovagency which among others owns the brand @astartupstory which is an influencer account that tells and share our’s and other’s startupstories. We also do collaborations with larger companies, right now you can see our shop in shop with startup products in selected Clas Ohlson stores in both Stockholm and Gothenburg. I’ve also worked at larger listed companies both as a controller an analyst and for four years I was the Managing Director of SIFE Sweden, a subsidiary of SIFE International which operates in 40 countries. During the years I have received a lot awards and nominations for my work. I´ve been named one of Europe’s best entrepreneurs by “Business Week”, and “Veckans Affärer” has twice named me a “super talent of the year” and deemed me a future person in power in Sweden. In 2013 I received Framtidspriset for my work with Business Challenge. The award is initiated by Swedbank, ABB, Teknikföretagen, Swedish Energy Board and WWF. In may 2015 Ledarna - Sweden’s organization for managers listed me as one of 75 future female leaders. In december 2015 I was honored by H.R.H Prince Daniel and the Minister of Enterprise & Innovation Mikael Damberg, as one of the top three innovation angels in Sweden. For my work with creating a better environment for innovation in Sweden. In March 2016 The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees (TCO) deemed my a future as one of the most influential persons within swedish enterprise. What is your best advice to students who just got their bachelor’s or master degree and are applying for a new job? Follow your heart. The most important thing in life (when it comes to work) is to do something that gives you more than a paycheck. What do your company do to attract employees? Culture is everything. Create a culture with nice people with whom you can be yourself and create a culture which gives each individual to perform its best. What are you and your company looking for when employing new people? When we recruit employees we look at the personality, social competence, good work ethic and positivity. 19
Words from THE DEAN “You come to JIBS to make an investment that makes your life better.” 20
25 done, 25 to go - at least! T he Nextstep team sat down with Jerker Moodysson, the CEO of Jönköping International Business School, JIBS, to hear his thoughts about the Nextstep fair. Why is it such an important event? How does he feel about the fair celebrating its 25th anniversary? And what is the CEO: s number one advice for JIBS students? Below, Mr. Moodysson share with us, his view of the Nextstep fair. Why is the Nextstep career fair so important to JIBS? Networking. That is the single most important benefit and effect of the fair. To JIBS it is important that the students build good connections that can help them both during and after their education here at the university. Trough Nextstep the students can directly come in contact with companies, a service that JIBS itself cannot fully assist with. It is also important to show the companies that we, JIBS, is relevant to them. That we educate people for the business world and that we are a reliable resource for them. The fair has a practical need in that it becomes a way for our students to get ahead in their careers, but also a symbolic need in that is shows the industry and commerce that this school is relevant. Why is Nextstep important for the students? For, you, the students this is a mayor opportunity that you really should seize, both in terms of building relations and to gain inspiration. Nextstep gathers all activities and companies under one roof, that means you can, during just one day, make connections that otherwise would take years to build. A big portion of our students have employments that awaits them from the very day they graduate. I believe a big contributor to that is that the Nextstep team work so hard to bring students and companies together. To attend the fair is also a great way to gather information and inspiration about what you might want to do in the future. What is your primary advice to current students? I would say, go to the Nextstep fair with an open mind and be yourself. Try to absorb as much as you can of the fair. It is important to portrait a true image of yourself. Do not attempt to “perform”, dress up and be representative, that is not the purpose of Nextstep; it is rather to be you and see where that will take you. How do you feel about Nextstep turning 25 years old? It is amazing. If a project can stay alive for 25 years it means that the project is needed and that it creates value for those involved. That the fair has been around for 25 years tells me it will continue to be so for 25 to come, at least. The students, JIBS and the companies all benefit from it. If no one found the Nextstep fair beneficial and rewarding, companies and students alike, they would not return. You cannot keep a project running on pure will, it has to deliver something. That Nextstep is turning 25 is a prof it has delivered. Professor Jerker Moodysson Dean and Managing Director Jönköping International Business School 21
