Piney Point Campground Vina, AL Bear Creek Reservoir Tennessee Valley Marinas and Campgrounds: Operating your business in the Tennessee Valley is no small feat. It requires tenacity, hard work, and 2023 PARTNERS environmental conscientiousness as your business is conducted in an ever-changing environment. In addition to federal, state and local laws, TVA also has guidelines that must be followed. The success of your business is influenced not only by your actions, but also those of your staff, patrons and the general public. Then there is unpredictable nature, which can blow in with a gust of wind or rising waters and cause unexpected damage to your property and the surrounding environment that you rely upon for your business. It can be a lot to balance. This calendar recognizes the Clean Marinas and Camp-Right Campgrounds in the Tennessee Valley. Criteria for each program are described in the following pages. Though there is no fee directly associated with being in either program, participants expend extra resources to ensure that their facilities go above and beyond to support the beautiful natural resources of the Tennessee Valley region. We salute you. Thank you. Please keep up the great work! Allen Clare Cover Photo: Watauga Lakeshore Resort & Marina – Hampton, TN – Watauga Reservoir Vice President, River and Resources Stewardship

Tennessee Valley Clean Marina Program The Tennessee Valley Authority created this program to support and recognize marina operators and owners who are voluntarily striving to protect the water resources of the Tennessee Valley and to promote environmentally responsible marina and boating practices. This program is a way for TVA to recognize those marinas that go a step further to ensure clean water is available to future generations. This program scores marinas on seven topic areas. In Stormwater Management and Control each of the categories listed below, a marina must complete Storm runoff from parking lots, maintenance and repair areas, and shorelines 75% of the recommended actions in order to be considered transports many pollutants to the lake. 2023 JANUARY Beach Island Resort & Marina Maynardville, TN Norris Reservoir “It was very important to me that we become a Tennessee Valley Clean Marina and Camp-Right Campground so that we could show our customers that we care about keeping the lake and land ‘Clean.’ Any marina and campground on Norris Lake that is not a certified Clean Marina and Camp-Right Campground should definitely get on board to get it done. It was a fun learning experience.” – Larry Collier, Director of Management and Operations Hope for the best – prepare for the worst SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Marina operations involve several federal requirements, one being the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan. The technique used should be determined 25 26 27 28 29 30 27 28 29 30 31 on a case-by-case basis and may require professional assistance. Live plantings is a low-cost investment method that involves selecting the appropriate 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 vegetation and allowing nature to heal itself. Property owners generally can implement this technique on their own. Bioengineering relies on a combination of structural INTERNATIONAL PLASTIC BAG FREE DAY components and plants to produce a dense stand of vegetation and a landscape element. INDEPENDENCE DAY Bioengineering may involve bank shaping to reduce the slope of the land and can be costly. Lastly, there is hard armoring, which includes installing rock riprap or gabion wire baskets filled with rock. Hard armoring also may involve bank shaping. 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 Boundary Waters Resort & Marina used the bioengineering method by installing riprap and coconut rolls to control a portion of its eroding shoreline. The fabricated roll holds the soil in place while vegetation that was embedded in the roll 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 grows. It may take two to three years before the vegetation becomes established.
