We have missed hearing the town bustling with over 29 activities and it is exciting to be back. “Return of the Lambs” is more than this years’ theme. It reflects the Linn County Lamb & Wool Fair’s Board of Directors’ desire to resume and continue a long-standing tradition. This Fair is for families & friends to come together and support our community while having fun. It raises funds for individual scholarship and educational programs along with continuing to keep our tradition alive. So - Thank You for being here. Meet Our Grand Marshall, Don Shindler Don Shindler was born in Scio in 1929, the eldest of 10 children, grew up in Scio and attended Scio schools. He served in the military including the Korean War followed by 18 months in Japan. He met and married his wife, Phyllis, in California in 1955. They owned and operated West Coast Headboard Company in California, before moving back to Oregon and making Scio their forever home. He made his living as a drywall supervisor on and off for 20 years and retired from Multicraft Plastics after 20 years of service. Shindler Bridge, which was built circa 1907, was named after Don’s grandparents, John and Anna Shindler. Don spent much of his spare time on the weekends building homes in Scio in the 1980’s. He also spent the best part of a year back in the 1990’s building the Carol Bates Stage on the Lamb & Wool Fairgrounds. Don has spent his retirement serving the town of Scio as a Museum Board Member, where he helped write the book, “Scio, Czech’s New Found Oasis,” along with Willetta and Jerry Duncan. Don is truly a Scio treasure. He says, “Of all of the places I’ve ever been, Scio’s the best!” When asked what keeps him young, he replied, “Just visiting and talking to people. I love life and I love people.”
Introducing Our Honored Citizens, Mike and Melodee Scofield Mike and Melodee moved to Scio in 2015 with their middle daughter and granddaughter to help care for Melodee’s mom and dad. Their eldest daughter was already living in Scio with her family when they moved here. Helping the parents/grandparents was a family affair with everyone pitching in. They moved into a 100+yr old house just down the street from Melodee's parents. Being so close was truly a blessing. Mike was a police officer for 27 years, retiring in 2014. Melodee was a full-time police officer’s wife, which took up the majority of her time. In her “spare” time, she worked as an aide at their local middle school until their daughters were out of school. Mike and Melodee were foster parents to six children over the years, a time that was both extremely challenging and rewarding. As their kids got older and eventually left home, Melodee was able to ride along with Mike while he was on duty. By doing this, they were able to spend more time together, something that can be a challenge in a law enforcement family. Mike and Melodee love to travel and, when their kids were younger, go camping. They lived in Texas when Mike was in the Air Force and traveled and camped cross-country several times when their daughters were young. In addition to visiting many states, they've been to England, Scotland, France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and Korea. They lived in Korea when Mike was in the USAF and treasure the experiences they had there. They would like to travel much more, but have been quite busy the last few years because of their newest jobs as small business owners! Mike and Melodee bought Scio Hardware and Mercantile in August of 2017. Owning the store has enabled them to give to their community in ways they were never able to while in law enforcement. It’s a different facet of community service than they were accustomed to, with all of the positives and none of the negatives. Those in law enforcement will be able to relate. Mike and Melodee’s youngest daughter lives in California, stationed with her husband at Travis AFB. In addition to their three daughters and sons-in-law, they have nine grandchildren ranging in age from four months to 17 years old. They’re looking forward, if everything works out, to a family reunion this October. It’s been six years since they’ve visited with all three of their daughters together, and the entire family, including husbands and grandkids, have never all been together. Mike and Melodee will celebrate 40 years of marriage June 1 and can’t think of a better area in which to live out their lives. They’ve come to love Scio and all of their friends here and are truly honored and humbled to be recognized as honored citizens.
Thank You for Your Service, Myles Ralston! STS2 (SS) USN Myles Ralston’s family moved to Scio when he was in the third grade. He graduated from Scio High School in 1986. After graduation, Myles attended Boot Camp in San Diego, California, then attended Sonar “A and C” school. In May of 1988, he reported to the submarine George C. Marshall SSBN 654(B), which was stationed in Groton, CT and Holy Loch, Scotland for four years until decommissioning in 1992. He traveled under the sea to port calls in Puerto Rico and Italy as well as providing support for Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He then traveled to Bremerton, WA via the Panama Canal for the decommissioning of the G.C. Marshall SSBN 654. After decommissioning, he attended Sonar Maintenance School from May 1992 until May 1993, when he reported to the USS Drum SSN 677, home ported in San Diego, California. In December of 1993, he departed on a 6-month deployment to the western Pacific with port calls in Sasebo, Japan, Guam, New Caledonia and South Korea, returning in June 1994. The USS Drum participated in San Francisco’s Fleet Week in October 1994 and a port call in Astoria, Oregon. In December, the USS Drum departed San Diego for its final deployment to the western Pacific with port calls in Guam and Hong Kong. During the visit to Hong Kong, the Drum was hit by a container ship, damaging part of the sonar system, resulting in yet another trip to Guam for evaluation and repairs before returning to San Diego. In May of 1995, the USS Drum changed home port to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for decommissioning and Myles was discharged from the Navy in December of 1995. Myles has continued to serve his community as a committed volunteer, contributing 16 years to 4H, 12 years to FFA and 4 years to Forestry. In FFA he has served as State Regional Alumni Vice President, Mentor for High School Ag Mechanics, Scio FFA Fundraisers and was instrumental in the construction of the chapter greenhouse. For the past 16 years, Myles has been the local leader of the 4H Club Lucky Livestock and served as the Swine Superintendent at the Linn County Fair. Myles has been a part of the Lamb & Wool Fair for over 8 years. He has always been a volunteer, setting up the fairgrounds, maintaining the Big Red Pavilion – you name it. He joined the Board in 2014 and became Vice President in 2019. We are proud to recognize Myles as our 2022 Honored Veteran.

Scio’s Historical ZCBJ Hall In the Spring of 1920, the Western Czech Brotherhood had raised enough funds to build a new lodge in Scio. This was about the same time that Bohemia and Slovakia merged to form the new country of Czechoslovakia in the northwestern corner of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire that had crumbled during World War I. Many of Scio’s early settlers were of Czech ancestry and had come to America to escape the repressions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The brotherhood formed by the Czech settlers was much like the Grange formed by the English settlers, using their halls for social events and as a life insurance cooperative. The name of the brotherhood in Czech is: Zapadni Czesko Bratrska Jednota (ZCBJ) which translates to Western Czechoslovakian Fraternal Association. After the completion of the Scio lodge in 1922, it quickly became the center off social activities in town. Polka dances were held on Saturday nights, drawing many people from miles around. Community companionship was enjoyed at the many potlucks and dinners featuring Czech dumplings, sausages and kolaches. The Hall could even be transformed into a gymnasium fir use by area children who attended i\organized gymnastics and competitions. The ZCBJ continued their lodge meetings and community activities until 1993, when, because of dwindling numbers and ever-increasing age of members, they deeded their hall to the Linn County Lamb and Wool Fair Association with the requirement that the hall would continue to be used as a community center. Today The Hall is used for myriad of functions including, weddings, receptions, anniversaries, memorials, banquets, meetings, exercise classes, fundraisers, concerts, plays, auctions, flea markets, reunions, luncheons, and parties. If you would like to rent the ZCBJ Hall for your event or for more information about the Hall, visit us on the web at www.zhall.org and on Facebook at Scio ZCBJ Hall. So be sure to tune in to KYAC 90.1FM or www.kyacfm.org at 7 p.m. on May 21st! We plan to return to the ZCBJ Hall next year and hope to see you there
