A M E S S A G E F R O M OU R P R E SI D E N T GROW TH OF ASSET S Home is why – literally. Why do you: celebrate your town’s bicentennial? Volunteer to water your main street’s hanging flower baskets? Raise money to purchase youth sports equipment and new welcome signs at your town’s entrances? Hang banners of your town’s veterans? Return to the same place after every vacation? Because it’s your home, your identity, your community, and you want to nurture it and see it prosper and thrive. 2020 $21.7 million in assets Then why do so many of us see an allure in leaving? In my own case, and sometimes just because of that allure, I left Crawford County and moved a total of eight times before STILL ending up right 2010 back in Crestline. In The Case for Moving Back to Your Hometown, Rainesford Stauffer explains, “I saw $11.1 million in assets moving somewhere new as a certain kind of success in growing up.” Similarly, author Melody Warnick points out that there is a stigma in America not only against small towns, but in staying in the same place at all. On the other hand, I’ve seen plenty of “stationary” people boast on their professional profiles that they were “born and raised in Hometown, USA’’ as if it were an accomplishment to stay put, or maybe their mother’s accomplishment to have had the good fortune to birth them there. For me, I agree with Stauffer’s point that “…sometimes, we find ourselves and means of moving forward by 2000 going back.” Or as she so eloquently said in another way, “It’s okay to outgrow the life you thought you wanted.” $3 million in assets So what about that stigma against small towns? An organization called SaveYour.Town conducted a survey of rural challenges in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021. These surveyors feel that what media, policy makers and service providers tell us are the biggest challenges for rural communities - typically poverty, drugs, and crime - are misleading at best and serve to fuel the negative small town stereotypes. Instead, the rural respondents answering their surveys consistently cited their number one concern for their small towns as being attitudes – attitudes that resist change, resist new ideas and “...We kn ow, to put our resist moving forward and thus ultimately hinder progress. Now think about it – is that REALLY surprising? How long has Crawford County been citing our community’s letterman jacket mentality as holding us back? How long have we been f utures f i rst, we must f i rst complaining about wasted resources with all our duplication of services? Think about how few local organizations you can put our dif ferences aside.” list whose titles begin with “The Crawford County __________,” but how many you can list whose titles begin with “The Bucyrus __________” and “The Galion __________.” - A M A N D A G O R M A N , P O E T, We’ve all heard the saying, “There’s no ‘I’ in team.” I would add that there’s both a “u” and an “I” in “community.” That’s right – F I R S T N AT I O N A L YO U T H P O E T you and I - only through working together, sharing, collaborating, and releasing our vice grip on resistance to change will L AU R E AT E we see the improvements for which we yearn. In 2013, we made the decision to officially change our name to The Community Foundation for Crawford County to accurately reflect that we are here to serve the entire county – all- encompassing without bias, preferences or favoritism for any one part of our community over another. Notice the name even says “for” Crawford County as opposed to “of.” More recently, as you will notice in this report, we have embraced change again and implemented a new logo and tag line. Whether you never left, left and returned, came here from somewhere else, or moved and still live elsewhere, we’ve all “come home” in some fashion to Crawford County. We all share our community’s roots, its strengths, its challenges. We all have a human need for our community. Only we can save our community, because like the surveyors at SaveYour.Town remind us, “…no one is coming to do it for you.“ We hope you enjoy this annual gratitude report/calendar and feel a sense of pride in both your local community foundation’s accomplishments AND Crawford County’s inspiring residents. Home is Why. He is Regards, Lisa Workman, CFRE President Why!
