CALENDAR 2022 “Outstanding Outbuildings” This year’s calendar theme features twelve “Outstanding Outbuildings.” If you look around town for these structures, you will find that there are a number of impressive and creative structures throughout the city, both old and new, from detached garages, lean-to additions, carriage houses, sheds, barns, man caves and she sheds. Special thanks to those who sent nominations in and to those homeowners who are proud to show off their outstanding outbuildings by being included in our 2022 City of Grand Haven calendar.
Message From Mayor MCNALLY Page 1 As my big, red dog and I topped the hill above Mulligan’s Hollow under a rare cloudless January sky, the loudspeaker crackled to life and a voice that meant business intoned “Billy, put down that snowball. You know the rules.” I started laughing, tickled to live in a town where grown-ups know the kids by name and kids understand there are rules, even if fresh snow proved too great a temptation for strict compliance. This is my first week as Mayor and my first attempt at an annual “Mayor’s Message.” I thought I’d use it to encourage us all to reflect upon and reinforce Grand Haven’s strong sense of community. Given changes our world has undergone in the last two years, we may have gotten a little rusty. My first suggestion is we look for ways to extend kindness, patience, generosity and support to the kids and young adults in our town. Their lives have been rocked by change, loss and fear in unimaginable ways yet, by and large, they have shown themselves to be strong, flexible, resilient, practical, courageous and optimistic. I remember with great affection, in much kinder times, neighbors and family friends who showed an interest in me, who shared stories, treats and odd jobs, who guided, teased and expressed pride in me, who wrote me a job or school reference, who Pictured (left to right, top to bottom rows): Mayor Catherine McNally, Council Member Ryan Cummins, Council Member Mike Fritz, Council Member Karen gave me my first summer job. Grand Haven City Council Goals Page 2 Goals Come From Public Input Grand Haven City Council works on a goal statement toward the end of each calendar year. The graphic on this page is the goal statement for 2021–2022. Council sets priorities for staff to accomplish and understands that, without stated priorities, an organization tends to drift. With well- defined priorities, the City makes substantial progress on several key fronts. Goals generated by City Council provide guidance to the City Manager and enable him to deliver the services and quality of life that the people of Grand Haven expect. Call your elected officials and let them know what YOU think is important for Grand Haven. All of the goals shown here came from the people of Grand Haven, and next year’s goals will come from public input as well. Government Structure The Grand Haven City Council serves as the elected body of the City and is comprised of the mayor and four council members, all who live within the City limits. City Council establishes policy by allocating public funds in the form of an annual budget. The City Council appoints a professionally trained and experienced manager to administer the day-to-day operations of the City and provide policy recommendations. Grand Haven is among the more than 175 home rule cities in Michigan that use the council-manager form of government. 215 S Fourth St Built in 1880 by Jurien and Durke Ball, owners of Ball Dry Goods and Groceries, this barn was once red and home to horses, chickens and pigeons. Today, it’s easy for the Rowe’s to imagine they are farm kids, as they sit next to the barn looking out into the gardens. Whether working or relaxing, it’s a colorful show!
