Cromwell by the Lake - Guided 1 Day / 1 Night Ex Queenstown Availability: September to May Duration: 1 Days Distance: 16km Description: One-day adventure with pickup from Queenstown accommodation or Airport at 9:00am. A Visit to the charming and quirky Arrowtown; a delightful Gold Rush village. Dunedin Eco Tour - Guided 2 Day / 1 Night Ex Dunedin Availability: September to May Duration: 1 Day Description: On completion of your Rail Trail adventure in Middlemarch you take the Taieri Gorge train to Dunedin, arriving at 6.30pm. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, over viaducts and through tunnels. Our driver will transport you from Clyde, highlighting points of interest along the way, to Oturehua where you can start the mainly downhill ride back to Clyde. Oturehua to Clyde Max Distance: 67kms Meals: Morning Tea & Lunch Your adventure starts at 8:30am at our Clyde Depot where you will be fitted on your bikes and briefed on your tour. We will then transport into the peace of the Ida Valley to Oturehua, where there is time for morning tea and any last minute questions before you set off. The ride will take you through the Poolburn Gorge featuring two tunnels and two viaducts in a secluded rocky setting. Magic Maniototo 1 Day Ex Dunedin Availability: September to May Duration: 1 Day Distance: 33km Description: This 1 day cycle tour has you cycling through parts of the Taieri Gorge on the famous Otago Central Rail Trail. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, over viaducts and through tunnels. Our driver will transport you from Dunedin to Ranfurly, highlighting points of interest along the way, where you can start the mainly downhill ride back to Hyde. Ranfurly to Hyde Distance: 33kms Meals: Snacks and Lunch Pack Your adventure starts in Dunedin at 8:00am when you will be picked up from your accommodation by our shuttle service and taken through the vast Maniototo Plains to Ranfurly. On the way, we call in at our Middlemarch Depot to fit you on your bike. Once at Ranfurly, you will set off to experience 33km of cycling with a slight downhill gradient. The day’s highlights are between Daisybank and Hyde where the trail runs alongside the Taieri River, over the Capburn and Prices Creek Bridges and through the last tunnel. The Daisybank to Hyde section is a very special part of the trail. The ride finishes at the Hyde Hotel carpark where we will pick you up and take you to Pukerangi Station where you will board the Taieri Gorge Train for the pectacular two-hour journey back to Dunedin. Roxburgh Gorge Explorer 1 Day Ex Clyde or Queenstown Availability: Year-round, subject to boat availability Duration: 1 Day Distance: 30 - 35km Description: This one-day adventure on the Roxburgh Gorge Trail not only has some amazing cycling but also includes an enjoyable and informative, 13km jet boat ride on the Clutha River / Mata Au. In places, this trail can be steeper than the Rail Trail, with some climbs and downhill sections, but the views and scenery make it well worthwhile. This trail offers the opportunity to explore a unique New Zealand landscape, with every season offering a different experience. Roxburgh Dam Distance: 30 - 37kms Meals: Snack & Lunch Pack Your adventure starts at 9:00am at the Trail Journeys Depot in Clyde where our staff will brief you on your tour and fit your bikes, before boarding the shuttle to the lookout at Roxburgh Hydro Dam. From here, the cycle ride back to Clyde begins, taking you through the stunning Roxburgh Gorge to the Shingle Creek boat ramp. Here a local boat operator will meet and transfer you Doctors Point, and along the way, there is the chance to take in the stunning scenery and listen to an informative, historical commentary. At Doctors Point, the trail continues to Alexandra where there is the choice of two routes. You can cycle over the Clutha River / Mata Au, through the town and connect with the Rail Trail to return to our depot, or take the scenic River Track and ride through Clyde township back to our depot - this is approximately 8kms longer. You can cycle over the Clutha River / Mata Au, through the town and connect with the Rail Trail to return to our depot, or take the scenic River Track and ride through Clyde township back to our depot - this is approximately 7kms longer. Rail Trail Highlights 2 Days/1 Night Ex Clyde or Queenstown Availability: September to May Duration: 2 Days Distance: 85km Description: This 2-day / 1-night independent cycle adventure takes in the two most scenic parts of the famous Otago Central Rail Trail. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, over viaducts and through tunnels. There are also many old historic hotels to visit along the way. This two-day highlights package is the perfect option for people wishing to experience the best parts of the trail but who have limited time available. Accommodation is twin/double share ensuite room. Day 1 Omakau to Wedderburn Distance: 42kms Meals: N/A Your adventure starts at 9:00am our Clyde Depot where you will be fitted on your bikes, briefed about your tour. We will then transport you to Omakau where you will start your ride to Wedderburn. The highlight of today’s ride is through the Poolburn Gorge, featuring two tunnels and two viaducts in a secluded rocky setting. The gorge then opens out to the vast expanse of the Ida Valley, made famous by the paintings of Graham Sydney. Oturehua is a good lunch stop with the old Gilchrist’s Store and the Oturehua Tavern. Other attractions in this area include the historic Hayes Engineering Workshop, and the remains of the Golden Progress Mine just beyond Oturehua. Your accommodation is in Wedderburn and dinner can be arranged at the Wedderburn Tavern (price not included). Day 2 Wedderburn to Hyde Distance: 43kms Meals: Breakfast From Wedderburn, the ride is mostly downhill to Ranfurly, the Art Deco Capital of Otago. The trail then passes through the small town of Waipiata – a great stop for a cold drink or lunch. The day’s highlight must be the scenic section between Daisybank and Hyde with the Taieri River close by, and the Capburn and Prices Creek Bridges, followed by the last tunnel before reaching Hyde. The shuttle bus will pick you up mid-afternoon from here and take you back to Clyde to your car or your onwards travel. Wedderburn Clyde Trailblazer 2 Days/1 Night September - May Ex Clyde or Queenstown Availability: Year-round Duration: 2 Days Distance: 78km Description This cycle adventure is one of our most popular two-day options. Our shuttle will transport you from Clyde to the highest point of the famous Central Otago Rail Trail at Wedderburn. For the next two days the ride is mostly downhill, back to Clyde. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, over viaducts and through tunnels. There are also a number of old historic hotels to visit along the way. Accommodation is in a twin/double share room. Day 1 Wedderburn to Omakau Distance: 42kms Meals: N/A This package starts at 9.00am at our depot in Clyde where you will be fitted with your cycles, briefed on your tour and then transported to Wedderburn. From Wedderburn the first town is Oturehua and across the road from the old Gilchrist’s Store is the Oturehua Tavern - this is a great place for morning tea or lunch. Other places of interest are the historic Hayes Engineering Workshop, and the remains of the Golden Progress Mine just north of the trail. The next section is one of the most spectacular; the Poolburn Gorge. This features two tunnels and two viaducts in a secluded rocky gorge. Once past the gorge, the trail passes through the township of Lauder and then on to Omakau to your accommodation. Day 2 Omakau to Clyde Distance: 36kms Meals: Breakfast Today’s ride brings you from Omakau through to Clyde. Along the way you will pass through Chatto Creek and the tavern is a great place to stop for morning tea. The trail then follows the Manuherikia River to Alexandra. Here you may continue along the Rail Trail to our office in Clyde or, alternatively, cycle through Alexandra, over the Clutha River / Mata Au, and take the scenic, River Track, back through Clyde township to the depot - this is approximately 8kms longer. This two-day transit package is the perfect option for people wishing to travel from Queenstown to Dunedin and experience the best parts of the trail but who have limited time available. Day 1 Omakau to Wedderburn Distance: 42kms Meals: N/A Your adventure starts in Queenstown where you will be collected from your accommodation and taken to our Clyde Depot where you will be fitted on your bikes and briefed on your tour and then transported to Omakau where you will start your ride to Wedderburn. The highlight of today’s ride is through the Poolburn Gorge, featuring two tunnels and two viaducts in a secluded rocky setting. The gorge then opens out to the vast expanse of the Ida Valley, made famous by the paintings of Graham Sydney. Oturehua is a good lunch stop with the old Gilchrist’s Store and the Oturehua Tavern. Other attractions in this area include the historic Hayes Engineering Works and Homestead, and the remains of the Golden Progress Mine just north of Oturehua. Your accommodation is in Wedderburn and dinner can be arranged at the Wedderburn Tavern (price not included). Day 2 Wedderburn to Hyde Distance: 43kms Meals: Breakfast From Wedderburn, the ride is mostly downhill to Ranfurly, the Art Deco Capital of Otago. The trail then passes through the small town of Waipiata – a great stop for a cold drink or lunch. The day’s highlight must be the scenic section between Daisybank and Hyde with the Taieri River close by and the Capburn and Prices Creek Bridges, followed by the last tunnel before reaching Hyde. From here you will be transferred to Middlemarch and onto Pukerangi to meet up with the Taieri Gorge Railway Train which will take you onto Dunedin. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, through tunnels and over viaducts. Along the way, there are many old historic hotels to visit, experience wonderful cuisine and meet colourful local folk. Adding to the rail trail experience is a guided tour through the historic gold mining township of Naseby. Here you can also try your hand at curling - this is always full of fun and laughter. The tour finishes with a shuttle ride to Queenstown. Day 1 Middlemarch to Kokonga Distance: 43kms Meals: N/A The adventure begins at the historic Dunedin Railway Station and the scenic Taieri Gorge Railway to Pukerangi. Our shuttle bus will meet you at the station and transfer you to our depot in Middlemarch where you will be fitted with your bicycles and briefed on the tour. The trail takes you through the wide open spaces of the Strath Taieri, past the site of the 1943 Hyde Rail disaster and on to Hyde. Day 2 Kokonga to Oturehua Distance: 42kms Meals: Breakfast From Kokonga the next town is Waipiata and then onto Ranfurly, the Art Deco capital of Otago. From Ranfurly, there is a gradual climb to the highest point on the trail at Wedderburn followed by a steady downhill to your accommodation at Oturehua. Amazing views from the highest point as well as rolling countryside are part of the day’s highlights. From your accommodation in Oturehua, there is a guided tour of Naseby and curling. Other attractions in this area include the historic Hayes Engineering Works & Homestead, the old Gilchrist’s Store and the remains of the Golden Progress Mine just north of Oturehua. Total Trail Executive Tour 4 Days/3 Nights Ex Dunedin Day 4 Kokonga to Oturehua Distance: 39 - 46kms Meals: Breakfast A short detour to the Daniel O’Connell suspension bridge is recommended, before rejoining the rail trail in the morning. There is some good downhill stretches from Omakau to a lunch stop at Chatto Creek. The next town is Alexandra, the largest town on the trail. Feel free to take time to look around the town before continuing onto Clyde. You can cycle from Alexandra to Clyde past vineyards and over an old wooden trestle bridge on the Otago Central Rail Trail or, for the more adventurous, there is the option of riding on the River Track. The River Track option adds 7kms to the ride but offers amazing scenery alongside the stunning Clutha River / Mata-Au. After lunch the day’s highlight is the section between Daisybank and Hyde where the trail runs alongside the Taieri River, over the Capburn and Prices Creek Bridges and through the last tunnel before arriving at Hyde. The group will be transferred back to Waipiata for this night’s accommodation. Day 5 Hyde to Middlemarch Distance: 29kms Meals: B/L/D On the way back to Hyde from Waipiata, there is a visit to Macraes Gold Mine. The trail from Hyde passes the site of the 1943 Hyde Rail disaster and on through the wide-open spaces of the Strath Taieri. There will be a morning snack along the way and lunch in Middlemarch. If time allows, we will take you on a brief sightseeing tour around the Middlemarch area before returning to our depot. For those travelling on the Taieri Gorge Tourist Train trip to Dunedin the shuttle to meet this train departs at 4:00pm from our Middlemarch depot. The train arrives in Dunedin at 6:30pm. Transport back to Queenstown by bus can be arranged for you if required. Central Train Link Service 1 Day Ex Dunedin Availability: 1st October to 30th April Description: The Central Train Link Service is a new service linking Dunedin with Queenstown. The service will operate during our summer season (October – April) and link the Taieri Gorge Railway Train with Trail Journeys’ daily shuttle service from Dunedin to Queenstown. Daily service: October - April Catch the 9:30 am Taieri Gorge Railway Train journey from Dunedin Railway Station to Pukerangi. From here, Trail Journeys will transport you to Middlemarch; arriving at approximately 12:00pm. There is time for lunch at a café as well as a look around Middlemarch. Return to our Middlemarch Depot by 2:00pm for a 2:30pm departure on our bus to Clyde, arriving in Clyde at approximately 5:00pm. After a short break, the Queenstown shuttle departs Clyde, arriving in Queenstown at approximately 6:30pm. A hotel drop-off service is available for Queenstown upon request.
