NYSSA Online Magazine President’s Message: State of the Association by Rosanne Warner, NYSSA President president@nysnowmobiler.com It is HOT!! Well, we have officially had two days above 90 degrees and I, for one, am ready for winter again. Like many others out there who enjoy the colder months in upstate, I am not a huge fan of the warmer weather, especially when it brings humidity, bees, black flies, and other nuisances that come with better weather. As summer approaches, I have been keeping my eye out on social media for club events and hoping I find an event post for a grass drag, vintage show or fundraiser, but so far, I have not seen any, but I’ll keep looking. With last year's lack of events, I am primed for something – anything snowmobiling in the warm months, but if nothing arises, at least I can look forward to the return of the Big East Show in the fall. Lately, on social media, I have seen a lot of posts concerning the removal of the rails from Lake Placid to Tupper Lake and it seems to be of great interest to others in the snowmobiling community. From what I can gather, the last of the rails on this section have been removed and over the summer, I hope to take a ride up to Tupper to walk the trail and see how it turned out. The railbed has been one place that I can honestly say has not been one of my favorite spots to ride as I have always been leery of the switches and other riders who do not seem to be able to share the trail. Whether it is because they are afraid to ride too close to the edge of the trail or because they are simply trail hogs, I am not sure but with the rails removed, I may take another ride on the trail this coming season. If you are anything like me, you sometimes daydream while you are driving along, especially when there is no snow on the ground. I find myself thinking about where new trails could be constructed, where ditch banging might be possible and what hazardous conditions are visible when there is no snow on the ground. Doing this keeps me thinking of the next season and where to ride when the snow finally does show up. Just this morning, I already began the job of planning a ride when some out of state friends come to visit in February 2022 and I realize that we are actually closer to the end of last season than we are to the beginning of the next one, but you know the old saying – there is no time like the present. No matter what, we all have some more warm weather temperatures to endure as we head into summer, but if your anything like me, you may be dealing with the heat, but your heart will be thinking of cooler weather. Either way, I wish you all a very safe and happy summer and hope to see you all at some upcoming club events soon! Think snow. NYSSA Online Magazine ClubReport Trail Coordinator News by Jim Rolf, NYSSA Trail Coordinator 888-624-3849 x 102 jrolf@nysnowmobiler.com CLUB NEWS Material Pricing Concerns for Snowmobile Clubs With the Covid pandemic causing a shortage of wood and plastic products as well as the transportation industry incurring a shortage of truck drivers to haul materials to stores and customers, the prices that clubs will be paying for items such as wood for bridges and sign posts, culverts, and even trail signs will be quite a lot higher than clubs have been accustomed to or are financially prepared for. This WILL ultimately hurt clubs who have major projects this next season and into the future (as industry insiders are reporting that prices should go down slowly, but not ever back to where they were pre-Covid times). Budgeting and making every dollar count is what club officials will need to do more than ever. Along those same lines, we all obviously see gas and diesel fuel prices going up weekly as well. Clubs will be relying more on donations and fundraisers to help offset the material increases when the revenue coming in from the Trail Fund is, at THIS time, stays the same. Anyone reading this article should recognize that clubs will be struggling a bit to cover their higher expenses, and supporting the clubs’ fundraising events is even more important this coming season. Clubs’ Funding During the past week, we have heard from NYS Parks that they intend to change the funding distribution process. For years now, the NYSSA Trails Committee, as well as the entire Board of Directors, have discussed potential changes that would work better for a majority of the clubs. The proposal presented to us is still being thought through on our end, and I expect that NYSSA will be presenting Parks with their suggestions on any such change to be sure it doesn’t hurt clubs. Again, this is a proposal at this time and any final determination by Parks will be presented to the Local Sponsors (County or Town representatives, respectively) to notify their clubs of. The increase in snowmobile registrations this past year does indicate that there should be a slight increase in the Trail Funding amount that clubs receive as partial reimbursement from Parks. How much we don’t know yet, and how it will affect the new proposal is also being considered. Stay tuned for more information on this situation, as clubs’ funding is an obvious big deal for every snowmobiler…since funding does affect how the trails are maintained. NYSSA Online Magazine Continued from page 4 The NYSSA Interactive Webmap and Mobile APP 2021-22 Updates are Coming to Both of NYSSA’s Mapping Products Obviously, the Mobile APP is not selling this time of year. Our goal this upcoming season is to have it released before November 1st. New trail data will be uploaded to the Webmap for the clubs to review and change as necessary and is utilized in the Mobile APP from there. All known reroutes during the season as well as new Unfunded Club Trails can be added by clubs at any time after the new data is ready. The NYSSA Mobile APP will remain at $4.99 this season. The direct link to the NYSSA Interactive Webmap is: https://webapps2.cgis-solutions.com/ nysnowmobile/ . STATE LAND NEWS The “Tree-Cutting” Legal Decision The big topic recently was the NYS Court of Appeals decision against the DEC and APA regarding “what is timber?” and how this legal blow will affect future snowmobile trail development in the Adirondack Park on Forest Preserve Land. While we are awaiting final word from the DEC on what their official reading is on this decision and when they can define a new policy to stay within the confines of the NYS Constitution’s Article 14, we do know that this will severely deal a blow to the North Hudson-Newcomb-Minerva trail that was proposed to connect those communities with a Class II Community Connector Snowmobile Trail (which also would have provided a new hiking trail and a mountain bike trail too). More to come on this subject when the smoke clears... Adirondack Rail-Trail News The rail-trail project work has begun earlier this spring as soon as the snow base melted, with the plans to have all the rails and ties removed by the fall of 2021. The hope is the vendor can handle the project, so next winter season, the rail- trail will be completely open from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid for snowmobile traffic. The businesses in the Tri- Lakes area really benefitted from the rail-trail this year, with the clubs maintaining doing as well as they did. It can only get better when all the rail material is finally taken up! Make plans to visit the Tri-Lakes are when the rail-trail opens. NYSSA Online Magazine The Big East Show Returns Let’s Gather Again, Like Old Times By John Prusak Content Director, Snow Goer Magazine A nd now, for the rest of the story and the rest of our lives! As we as a people emerge from the fog that is/was the COVID-19 era and resulting shutdowns, we’re reminded of a time-worn special effect in action movies, where the hero emerges through mist or smoke – transitioning from hardly visible to partially obscure to full-on ominous tough guy in a matter of seconds on the screen before us. That’s us. A year ago, truly, the only known was the unknown. We know now that some of the early panic buying and the bathing of everything we touched in bleach was an overreach, but as a society, we didn’t know what we didn’t know. Within society, within communities – heck, within individual families – folks took sides and carved their own paths for what they felt was right or wrong, from hyper worried cautious to “it’s all a total hoax” dismissive, with most of us somewhere in between. Thank God for outdoor activities – like snowmobiling – that allowed us to keep our sanity, enjoy our lives and social distance with a smile on our faces. Snowmobiling has always been a great escape from daily troubles for many of us, and it served that role expertly winter. That said, some of the joys of snowmobiling were still affected – closed borders, shuttered pitstops and cancelled events hurt the social aspect of the sport. But now, the fog is clearing at last. Folks are emerging from various levels of quarantine – whether government- or self-imposed – and seeing their friends and neighbors again. Destinations are beckoning, borders are opening, and folks are looking forward to gathering again with like-minded people. That includes the Big East Powersports Show in Syracuse. It’s been a staple for northeast snowmobiles in the fall run-up to riding season since XLTs, Formula Zs, ZRs and Vmaxes were the hot new thing in the mid 1990. After a stammering start in the Catskills in 1994, the annual showcase and social affair for snowmobilers found its home in Syracuse since 1995 – at the downtown Oncenter through 2018 and then to the New York State Fairgrounds on the west end in 2019 before being forced to take a year off last fall. NYSSA Online Magazine Continued from page 6 This just in: The Big East is coming back this year, October 1-3, and will be located in the huge Expo Center on the Fairgrounds site. Best yet, there will be more to do and see this year than ever before. For example, arguably snowmobiling’s most famous and socially engaging rock star – Levi LaVallee – will be spending a couple of days at the event this fall. Levi has seen and done it all – set world records for jumping snowmobiles, appeared on the Tonight Show, dominated the X Games, raced and owned a team in snocross, made memorable Red Bull videos and so much more. Beyond that, he’s also very personable and easy to talk to and will be a great addition to the show. Also new for 2021 is the “Big East Classic” vintage snowmobile show – a championship level celebration of the sport’s colorful history, with some of the best kept and best restored examples from various brands. This will be far more than a random display of classic iron; it’s a professionally judged event that’ll easily feature more than 100 snowmobiles, with trophies available in 14 different categories. Some of Levi’s appearances, the Big East Classic awards presentation and much more will take place on the new Snow Goer Stage, which is presented in part by the New York State Snowmobile Association. Aside from those attractions, the stage will be used for product presentations, how-to sessions, Levi LaVallee educational seminars and much more. A schedule is still being built. All of this is on top of the new snowmobile displays, featuring 2022 snowmobiles plus some other powersports equipment; the great deals on a broad array of riding gear and accessories at various retail booths; the broad range of trailers, trailering components, performance parts, lubrication products, etc.; the tourism-based booths, showcasing new places to experience on future snowmobiling adventures; local snowmobile club displays; and much, much more. The Family Fun Zone is also back to add fun for the kids, and more attractions are being added regularly. And, all of that is on top of the other glorious reason to attend: to hang out on a fun weekend with fellow snowmobilers who share your passion for the sport! Plan to bring your friends, grab some food and a few beverages, and hang out in the large, modern facility or outside in the Big East Classic corral. NYSSA Online Magazine How Seven Valley Snow Goers in Cortland County Club Recognizes Their Landowners By Kevin Forney, President, Seven Valley Snow Goers W ith over 190 members and 100 landowners on the 80 plus miles Seven Valley Snow Goers maintains in Cortland county in Central New York, my primary focus as the President in the beginning and during the season is resolving landowner issues and complaints. Just one landowner who decides to close a portion of our trail could have an extreme impact, especially when you are talking about the C5 main corridor trail. We had a landowner that took the signs and threw them in the ditch at the beginning of last season and sent the club a very negative email stating the trail will be permanently closed. I started with a friendly reply that I would like to talk to them, which resulted in a conference call with the family. The conversation began as an absolute “NO WAY” as some riders had disrespected her and the property the previous season. I explained that her piece of the trail had a key bridge that there was no way around and we would do whatever needed to make it right. They agreed to meet me on their property, where I explained that the club would snow fence and rope off the trail to ensure no riders could ride on her lawn. I also had a sign made stating that the "trail was on probation with the landowner," which also helped to "GET to YES". I received an email from the family at the end of the season saying thank you for following through on what you promised you would do. I also met with the Cortland County Sheriff Patrol Sergeant at the beginning of the season to talk about what the club issues are and what they should focus their attention on, which were riding too fast in residential areas, loud modified exhausts and not staying "between the stakes". I sent a thank you to the Sheriff at the end of the season, recognizing the deputies who we saw multiple times all season to include ticketing 6 riders who were on racing sleds! The Sheriff replied back, stating it was a successful season and he looked forward to continuing the relationship with our club. Also, at the end of the season, I send key landowners a Seven Valley thank you card signed by myself as the Club President. For the second year in a row, instead of holding a landowners appreciation pancake breakfast in April, which only garnered 5- 8 landowners and was a ton of work and cost, we partnered with the Groton Ridgerunners Snowmobile Club, a smaller club for a Spaghetti dinner. We send all landowners a voucher for two people for multiple dates from Nov-April. This year we had 24 landowners use this voucher! NYSSA Online Magazine Continued from page 10 Lastly, when a club member passes on or a key landowner, the club will put up a trail memorial sign to honor this person. You would be amazed how this simple act of respect and appreciation will keep a trail open with the family which might have been in jeopardy. Our Facebook editors Rick and Melissa Burt do a great job of always inserting "thank a landowner" on all posts. Any questions you may have, please give me a call or email.
