2021 Summer Term Instructional Application Guide April 1, 2021 ONLY CURRENT BCPS INSTRUCTIONAL EMPLOYEES ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY Summer term applications are completed and submitted online at: https://tinyurl.com/SummerTermApp2021 Deadline for applying is April 16, 2021 Broward County’s 2021 Summer Program has been expanded to include Pre-K through 12th grade students with a variety of programs and courses. It is anticipated that 3,000 plus teachers will be needed to staff BCPS summer term programs. Each site will determine the subject/course offerings based on the student needs. This packet will inform you of the programs and assist you with completing the on-line application. Elementary Level (Pre-Kindergarten – 5th grade) - Including Third Grade Summer Reading Academy Includes General Education and ESE students and ESY students. Standards and content will be related to Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The following Applied Learning Specials will be integrated within the content and taught by the classroom teachers: Art, Music, Debate, STEM, etc. The day will be wrapped with Social Emotional Learning. Teachers are expected to implement the curriculum with fidelity and to use student data to differentiate instruction. SWDs attending Summer Reconnect Program will have access to general education courses with the support of an ESE Teacher (Support Facilitator). NOTE: Third Grade Reading Camp will be for 3rd grade retention only. Teachers must hold Reading Endorsement/Certification. Preference will be for teachers that have received a Highly Effective 2021 Instructional Practice Score (IPS). Secondary Level (6th grade – 12th grade) Includes general ed/ESE and ESY students Students will attend math, science, social studies, and/or English Language Arts sessions to recover credit to be promoted, participate in programs for acceleration, participate in Applied Learning elective programming to find areas of passion which they have yet to discover, and/or participate in a Personalized Academic Social Learning (PASL) The Academic Acceleration program provides students a chance to get ready for next school year. These courses are for students that passed their current course, however, feel that they want a jumpstart on the topics to be learned in the subsequent class. For example, a student that has passed Algebra, but may not have mastered all the content, can choose to be placed in a Geometry course to accelerate their learning and be more prepared to be successful in Geometry. Elective offerings will provide access to students and promote opportunities for exploration and engagement. PASL sessions will embed explicit lesson on social emotional learning and provide further personalized academic support based on student needs. SWDs attending Summer Reconnect Program will have access to general education courses with the support of an ESE Teacher (Support Facilitator). Extended School Year & ESE (Prek-12th grade) Students with disabilities (SWD) who meet eligibility for Extended School Year (ESY) will work on IEP goals through a structured academic day and will receive related services according to their IEPs. 1
Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Students entering Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year that have not utilized their VPK Certificate of Eligibility will receive 300 hours of high-quality, Summer Pre-K instruction. Teachers must hold certification in Pre-K/Primary: Age 3-Grade 3, or Preschool Education (Birth-Age 4). Important: ✓ Instructional employees must meet the requirements per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Article 6, F, to be considered for Summer Term Employment Holds proper certification; employee has taught one school year in the subject being selected for within the last three years; received at least an effective evaluation & is a continuing employee. NOTE: Teachers with a Highly Effective evaluation will be given preference for Third Grade Summer Reading Academy. ✓ Preference will be given to qualified superseniority stewards and seniority teachers per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Article 6, F. ✓ Selected employees must commit to working the session selected for and must attend all mandatory training and planning. Failure to complete required training or to attend planning days will result in ineligibility. ✓ Instructional employees will receive their contracted hourly rate. Dates and information for the summer term programs: Pre-kindergarten – 12th grade: General Education and ESE, Extended School Year (ESY), and Third Grade Summer Reading Academy o Teachers will select which session(s) they prefer to work: • Full Session 6/21 – 7/29/2021 (23 days) • Session A: 6/21 – 7/8/21 • Session B: 7/8 – 7/29/21 • Teacher hours: 5 hours per day, to include 30 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for planning. Start and end times will vary depending on the location. o Teacher Planning and Classroom Setup: 6/17/21: 8:00 am – 3:00 pm (6 hours) o Mandatory Training (All grades except Third Grade Summer Reading Academy) (6 hours) o After hours on 6/9 AND 6/10: 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm OR o 6/14, 6/15, or 6/16: 8:00 am – 11:00 am and 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm (6 hours) o Mandatory Training (Only Third Grade Summer Reading Academy) o 6/14/21: 8:00 am – 11:00 am and 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm (6 hours) Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) o Teachers will select which session(s) they prefer to work: ▪ Full Session: 6/14/21 – 8/10/21 ▪ Session A: 6/14/21 – 7/13/21 ▪ Session B: 7/13 – 8/10/21 o Teacher hours: 7:15 am – 5:00 pm (9.75 hours) o Teacher hours half day (Morning Only): 7:15 am – 12:15 pm (5 hours) o Teacher hours half day (Afternoon Only): 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm (5 hours) o Mandatory Training & Classroom Setup: 6/11/21, 7:15 am – 10:15 am & 10:15 – 5:00 pm o Classroom Closing: 8/10/21: 11:30 am – 5:00 pm 2
Other information: o Incomplete applications may result in ineligibility for summer employment. o By submitting the application, you agree to attend all required training and planning and commit to working the entire session. DO NOT apply if you are planning vacation or have another obligation that would prevent you from being available for summer term employment. o You will be notified [date] via your BCPS email address regarding your status (e.g., employment) for a summer term instructional position. o Principals will communicate with you via your email and phone. It is imperative that you check your messages frequently. o If your school is participating in Reclaim & Elevate or the 21st Century Program, you may be selected for that program. Instructional Position Needs (dependent upon site and student needs) Instructional employees will mark on the application their preferred subject areas. Hiring principals will access the application and contact teacher candidates to discuss positions available. The principal may offer you any position for which you qualify. If you decline a position, you may become ineligible for summer employment.
