Rhodes-France Summer Camp: 1-6701-490-21 06-13-2021 1:00 PM GREATER SAINT LOUIS AREA COUNCIL Class Catalog 2021 Summer Camp-Rhodes France: Session 1 at Rhodes France Scout Reservation Summer Camp - Rhodes France (Scheduled Classes) RFSR1 10:30-11:30 AM Archery Archery is a fun way for Scouts to exercise minds as well as bodies, developing a steady hand, a good eye, and a disciplined mind. This merit badge can provide a Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr thorough introduction to those who are new to the bow and arrow - but even for the experienced archer, earning the badge can help to increase the understanding and appreciation of archery. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: #1a; #1b; #4a RFSR3 10:30-11:30 AM Camping Camping is one of the best-known methods of the Scouting movement. When he founded the Scouting movement in the early 1900s, Robert Baden-Powell encouraged Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr every Scout to learn the art of living out-of-doors. He believed a young person able to take care of himself while camping would have the confidence to meet life's other challenges, too. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Scoutcraft Prerequisites: 4a, 4b, 5e, 8d,9 (Verification from unit leader needed for #9) Note: Scout should have 20 days and nights of camping before taking this badge. RFSR4 9:30-10:30 AM Canoeing For several centuries, the canoe was a primary method of travel for explorers and settlers. Today, it remains an important part of the wilderness experience and an Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr enjoyable leisure activity that teaches communication, teamwork, and physical fitness. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Lakefront Prerequisites: Completion of the BSA Swim Test, bring water shoes. RFSR9 11:30-12:30 PM Cooking The Cooking merit badge introduces principles of cooking that can be used both at home or in the outdoors. Scouts who earn this badge will learn about food safety, Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr nutritional guidelines, meal planning, and methods of food preparation, and will review the variety of culinary (or cooking) careers available. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Scoutcraft Prerequisites: 4(all), 7 Notes: scouts must bring a mess kit or equivalent. Scouts will prepare two dinners and breakfast as part of the requirements. RFSR11 9:30-10:30 AM Environmental Science While earning the Environmental Science merit badge, Scouts will get a taste of what it is like to be an environmental scientist, making observations and carrying out Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr experiments to investigate the natural world. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Nature Prerequisites: 1, 2, 3e, 4, 6 Notes: Scouts should be prepared to discuss their report from requirement 3e in class. After learning about the history and importance of exploration - like when Eagle Scout Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr Paul Siple traveled to Antarctica or when Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong landed on the moon - you will prepare for and go on an actual expedition. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Scoutcraft Prerequisites: 4, 9 Note: Scouts will plan and take an expedition in camp during their week. It will not be overnight. RFSR14 10:30-11:30 AM First Aid First aid - caring for injured or ill persons until they can receive professional medical care - is an important skill for every Scout. With some knowledge of first aid, a Scout Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr can provide immediate care and help to someone who is hurt or who becomes ill. First aid can help prevent infection and serious loss of blood. It could even save a limb or a life. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Activity Building Prerequisites: 5 Note: Scouts do not have to be in the Pathfinder Program to participate. However you slice it, everyone has played games, and games help make us who we are. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Pre-requisites: 5 RFSR48 11:30-12:30 PM Insect Study In earning the Insect Study merit badge, Scouts will glance into the strange and fascinating world of the insect. There, they will meet tiny creatures with tremendous Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr strength and speed, see insects that undergo startling changes in habits and form as they grow, and learn how insects see, hear, taste, smell, and feel the world around them. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Pre-requisites: 5, 9, 10, 13 Notes: For requirement 9, some common insects like flies or beetles have shorter life cycles. Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Lakefront Prerequisites: Completion of the BSA Swim Test Note: Bring water shoes. RFSR22 10:30-11:30 AM Lifesaving No Boy Scout will ignore a plea for help. However, the desire to help is of little use unless one knows how to give the proper aid. The main purpose of the Lifesaving merit Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr badge is to prepare Scouts to assist those involved in water accidents, teaching them the basic knowledge of rescue techniques, the skills to perform them, and the judgment to know when and how to act so that they can be prepared for emergencies. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Pool Prerequisites: Completion of the BSA Swim Test. Note: Recommended for Scouts who are First Class rank or higher. RFSR43 9:30-11:30 AM Pathfinder The Pathfinder Program is Rhodes France Scout Reservation's basic skills program for first year Scouts. In addition to learning the fundamental principles of the Scouting Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr program, participants will earn their Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit certificates. The program is designed to help scouts earn advancement requirements toward Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks. Practicing rope use and completing projects with lashings also allow Scouts to connect with past generations, ancestors who used many of these skills as they sailed the open seas and lived in America's forests and prairies. There is absolutely no exception to this standard. A signed parental waiver sheet is required. Your $15 class fee covers the cost of the handbook which will be given to you at camp. RFSR30 9:30-10:30 AM Rifle Shooting Unless a rifle is handled incorrectly or recklessly, it is not dangerous. A rifle, like any other precision instrument, is manufactured to perform a specific task and can do so at Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr no risk to the user or others. By earning this badge, Scouts can develop their shooting skills while learning safe practices. Unlike a rifle, the bore of the Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr shotgun is not rifled, so the shot emerging from the muzzle is not spinning. Additional Fee: $40.00 Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Shotgun Range Prerequisites: 1, 2b (Option A) Do not print out laws, list 3 each on 1d and 1f. Note: Recommended for third year Scouts or higher. RFSR38 9:30-10:30 AM Swimming Swimming is a leisure activity, a competitive sport, and a basic survival skill. Scouts who earn this badge will learn about safety when swimming and diving, how swimming Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr can contribute to overall fitness and health, and gain some basic competitive swimming skills. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Pool Note: Scouts do not have to be in the Pathfinder Program to participate. RFSR38 11:30-12:30 PM Swimming Swimming is a leisure activity, a competitive sport, and a basic survival skill. Scouts who earn this badge will learn about safety when swimming and diving, how swimming Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr can contribute to overall fitness and health, and gain some basic competitive swimming skills. RFSR52 2:30-3:30 PM Swimming Class This is not the Swimming Merit Badge; it is an independent Swimming Class Maximum number of participants: 12 Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr RFSR49 9:30-10:30 AM Textile People use countless fibers and fabrics in their everyday lives: clothes, carpets, curtains, towels, sheets, upholstered furniture. Add to that list boat sails, book Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr bindings, bandages, flags, sleeping bags, mailbags, airbags, seat belts, backpacks, parachutes, umbrellas, basketball nets, and more. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: None RFSR41 11:30-12:30 PM Wilderness Survival In their outdoor activities, Scouts learn to bring the clothing and gear they need, to make good plans, and do their best to manage any risks. But now and then, something Days: Mo Tu We Th Fr unexpected happens. When things go wrong, the skills of wilderness survival can help make everything right again. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Where: Scoutcraft Prerequisites: 5 Note Scouts will improvise a natural shelter and campout on Thursday night.
