THE BRAND There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a year that we won’t forget in a hurry; the global pandemic has impacted on our health, finances and families – on our very way of life. It is to be hoped that the worst of the pandemic is now behind us and, as an industry, construction is better placed than most others to not just survive but thrive. Even during lockdowns imposed around the world most countries classified construction as ‘essential’ and many governments are actively looking to large-scale infrastructure investment to provide their economies with a boost. The technological revolution that has been transforming construction is providing the sector with increased productivity and efficiency while also enabling work to be done and monitored away from the construction site, helping in an age of social distancing. There will still be challenges ahead, but the future is positive. International Construction will continue to publish the magazine ten times a year as well as bring you construction technology supplements, newsletters, webinars, special issues such as the Global WAYS WE REACH KEY BUYERS IN THE Construction Guide, social media updates, podcasts and breaking news. GLOBAL CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Going forward, the construction industry is set to become more vital than ever to the global economy, and we will be there to report on it every step of the way. EQUIPMENT SALES PREDICTED TO RECOVER GLOBAL SALES OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT BY REGION, 2015-2024* (Units) Given all that has happened, the forecast made by Off-Highway Research is relatively positive. Construction equipment sales will fall from the high of just under 1.1 million units 1,200,000 in 2019 to a predicted figure of approximately 930,000 units in 2020. When placed in the context of the last decade this figure is relatively robust. 1,000,000 One of the reasons this figure is relatively strong is China. The global powerhouse is the world’s biggest market for construction equipment sales and the government has 800,000 invested in infrastructure projects to provide a boost to the economy. SOURCE: Off-Highway Research Stimulus spending in China will lift the market by an expected 14% to take sales to 600,000 their highest since the previous stimulus boom in 2010-2011. Prior to the pandemic, sales in China were expected to fall in 2020 as the market passed its cyclical peak. All the other 400,000 major markets for construction equipment sales – Japan, North America, India, Europe – will see declines in 2020. 200,000 Global sales are expected to increase in 2021 to around 950,000 units and then see a slight rise in 2022 before sales pass the million-unit mark in 2023 and 2034.
