High Desert Quilt Guild NEWSLETTER January 2022 Dear Members, MAGIC SHOW* Sometimes in winter while I’m sleeping through the night inside the house all snug and tight, outside the world is turning white. I ran across the children’s book Pieces: A Year in Poems & Quilts by Anna Grossnickle Hines. It’s a book of poetry, but my eye was drawn to the illustrations. Her illustrations are quilts, often made up of 1 1/8-inch squares and not much larger than the page of the book. In the back of the book she talks about her love of quilting, and how she creates these tiny little pieces of art. You can now check out Pieces from the guild library. Also we have Peaceful Pieces : Poems and Quilts About Peace by the same author. The Deschutes Library has another of her books, Winter Lights: A Season in Poems & Quilts. And in the back of the book you will find more inspiration on quilting. (They also have Peaceful Pieces) January is a month of snow. A good month to curl up with a quilt and a good book. And a good month to create a “small” quilt depicting a cold winter day. If you get inspired, bring your piece of art to a guild meeting and share it with your friends. Happy New Year, Bobbe Schafer *Magic Show is from the book Pieces REMINDER: Masks are required at our meetings. The governor of the State of Oregon has mandated that masks be worn in- doors. We are a 501c3 corporation, granted tax exempt status by the State of Oregon. As such there is no question that masks should be required at our indoor meetings. That is what the law requires. If we were flagrantly in violation of the safety mandates in the State of Oregon and someone contracted Covid, our organization could be held liable. IF we do all that the state requires in the way of safety measures, and right now that is to simply have everyone wear a mask indoors, we are in compliance with what the State of Oregon has mandated and we are operating in good faith. WORKSHOPS By Caroline Lincoln I will be sending out a survey before the end of January and asking for your feedback . I'd like to get new feedback on what you would like to see for workshops in the coming year: clas- ses, techniques, new products, etc. I would also like to know of any members who are willing to teach workshops for us. Right now there is a $20 limit on workshop fees. We have made exceptions and charged $25 last year. But, we may want to get a "special" instructor at a higher cost. I would like to find out how much you would be willing to spend. PROGRAMS By Stef Hinton January 6, 2022—Mary Ann Lisk Our guest speaker is Mary Ann Lisk. Many of you know her; she works at Sew Many Quilts, quilt shop in Bend. Mary Ann has visited before and also taught a wonderful art quilt class. She will be sharing her new passion for quilts and show- ing us how to make use and manage our fabric stash. You won’t want to miss it. In person or on ZOOM. February 3, 2022—Tools and Notions from the Stitchin’ Post Crew We will have the team from the Stitchin’ Post Quilt shop, in Sisters. Jean Wells, Valori Wells, and Jackie Erickson will share many of the latest and greatest notions available at the Stitchin’ Post. You will hear about these tools, get to see them in person and see them demonstrated. I am really looking forward to this. (You may not know this, but I am a notions/tools junkie! HDQG Library by Debbie Bleile Welcome 2022. As we start a new year, I would like to suggest a block of the month. We have many books that showcase this, and provide instruc- tion and ideas for seasonal blocks. They can be made up as a single wall hanging that you change out monthly, or put together into a quilt. I have personally done this and it is fun to gather them together at the end of the year. One book in our library is Quilter’s Dozen Plus and it suggests a wall hanging that you attach the blocks using snaps or Velcro, so you are able to change out the focal block each month. This book also provides lots of ideas to frame your single block as well. Of course it provides ideas and instruction on completing a quilt that measures 78x92. I wish for you to challenge yourself this year and happy quilting. P.S. Big thank you to Cheri for 2020-21 leadership of the Guild. MEMBERSHIP AND 2022 DUES By Judy Wells HDQG membership now stands at 138. Two new members joined us at the December meeting and renewals are coming in steadily. I will be available at the January 6 meeting to receive more cash and checks for membership renewals for 2022. As your new membership chair, I’m busy learning the many facets of this job. SUNSHINE COMMITTEE By Sue Nikiel (link here), Know someone in the guild who could use get well wishes and/or encouragement? Please let me know so that I can send them an HDQG card. IN MEMORIAM—ERNIE BROOKS Long time quilt guild member, Mae Brooks, lost her husband, Ernie Brooks, last week. There will be a memorial service for Ernie on January 3, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Redmond Memorial Chapel, 717 SW 6th St Redmond, Or. High Desert Quilt Guild - January 2022 Page 4 of 14
Community Outreach - Head Start & Hospice Quilts By Susan Bray As we begin the New Year, I want to thank you again for making all the Quilts for Kids that we delivered to the Walker Center of NeighborImpact Head Start! We delivered 93 quilts to the teachers so they could or- ganize the quilts and present a quilt to each child. NeighborImpact shared a couple pictures on their FaceBook page. The pictures showed the teachers choosing which quilt to give to which child. They loved seeing the quilts the day we delivered them. There were lots of ohhh’s and ahhh’s as they looked at the different quilts. It was fun to see the joy! As usual, this is a project we will continue to work on all year. So continue making quilts for us to give to the Head Start kids next December. And during the year we will also share quilts with the Early Head Start babies, and the Camp Sunrise of Hospice of Redmond. Fat Quarter Drawing By Laura Tawney Fat Quarter of the Month Chair Person Each month, members have the opportunity to grow their ‘stash’ by participating in a fun exchange of fat quarter fabric. A pattern will be also provided that is Fat Quarter Friendly. Fat Quarter Drawing The Fat Quarter of the Month Chairperson organizes the monthly drawing of fat quarters at guild meetings. A fat quarter of fabric is a one-fourth yard cut that usually measures 18" x 22". To create a fat quarter, cut a half-yard of fabric, 18" along the fabric's lengthwise grain, then cut that piece in half at its midpoint. Or, you can purchase precuts. What is a Fat Quarter? Fat Quarter fabric should be 100% cotton quilt-shop quality, approxi- mately 18" x 22”. This is a great way to expand our stashes with quality materials. Each month there is a theme. You bring your fat quarter to the fat quarter table at the back of the meeting room. Your name is entered into the drawing. The drawing will be held at some point during the How It Works! meeting. 1. Bring a fat quarter that coordinates with that month’s theme to the meeting. 2. Turn in your fat quarter at the Fat Quarter Table located at the back of the meeting room. Guidelines for Fat 3. Sign in and your name will be entered once in the drawing. Quarter Drawing 4. The drawing will be held at some point during the meeting. 5. If your name is drawn you win the lot of fat quarters. THE SILVER THIMBLE AWARDS FOR 2021 by Jan Romeis The Silver Thimble Award is given annually to individuals within the High Desert Quilt Guild in recognition of their exceptional efforts to promote the art of quilting, for their dedication and involvement in quilt activities. Previous winners may not be recipients. Congratulations to the 2021 HDQG Silver Thimble Award Recipients DEBBIE BLEILE created our guild library. That library now has over 350 volumes. She in- dexed the books and a list is now available on our website. She brings any books requested to the meeting. Debbie also helped create the blocks for the raffle quilt, and bound the quilt. She was the presenter at one of our meetings this year. In the first three years of the guild Debbie also shlepped around all of the community quilt materials to meetings. SUSAN BRAY has managed community quilts for 5 years. This includes gathering and storing quilts, making fabric and batting available to members, and sewing HDQG labels on the back of each quilt. With her guidance we are now making over 100 community quilts per year. In addi- tion, Susan, with Melissa was also the co-chair of the workshop committee through 2021. MELISSA HEUSER has been our webmaster for 5 years. She designed our website and keeps it running. She installed Wild Apricot and sends out e-mails and surveys to members. Melissa was also the co-chair of the workshop committee through 2021. DEBORAH MEDLAR was our treasurer for three years. She was also on the nominating committee, newsletter sub for 4 months, the co-chair of this year’s Christmas Party and Chair of the Raffle Quilt Creation. KAREN PERKINS has been our Secretary for 2 years. In addition, last year she made 11 com- munity quilts, was the presenter at one meeting, and also part of the presenters at another meeting. She also assisted in creating the raffle quilt blocks, and completed the sashing and border herself. She made half of the Christmas ornaments in the Christmas gift bags. SHIRLEY SMITH has been the quilt show co-chair for two years, and is continuing for this third year. She has managed countless meetings, overseen the budget, and generally made sure the quilt show will be a success. In addition, she ran the Mary Pope silent auction this year. Finally, when Debbie Bleile can't make it to meetings Shirley acts as librarian. She helped settle South Dakota when it opened to homesteading. She taught school in early 1900s, driving to school in a buggy. She delivered Tem- perance papers around town and fought for women’s right to vote, in town and country. She sewed all her own clothes and those for her children, making dresses for the girls out of feed sacks and later tailoring suits for herself. She al- so taught me to do this. I own a ‘Trip around the world quilt’, that she and my mother-in-law made. I can rub my fin- gers over those stitches and know that I am still connected to her.
