A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Today’s Gospel reveals Jesus being amazed that the people in his hometown of Nazareth do not accept his teaching and ministry; he is amazed at their lack of faith (Mk 6:6). Good stewards recognize and participate in Christ’s teaching, reconciling, and healing presence in their community. Are we good stewards of our family of faith? Do we value and support the ministries that take place in Christ’s name? Are we attentive to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our parish and encourage those who work to enhance our life of faith? Happy Fourth of July! God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being. REFLECTIONS HOMILY ON LIFE His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle DIFFERENT MEASURES OF LIFE 1. SOCIAL LIFE Commercialized life, they measure life by wealth, fame etc.; it is measured according to "things". 2. FAMILY LIFE For ecclesial community as Couples for Christ, it is good to be reminded that life is a "gift". Family is a gift not a thing, not a burden, not a problem. It is measured by love. LIFE (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24) God is the giver of life; it is Someone, not something. Life is a personal gift from a personal God. God gave life to His creation because of Love. Love is life-giving. DEATH Death is not from God for how could He give life and at the same time destroy His gift? God gives life, what destroys life is death; death comes from the Devil, why, because of envy. The Devil is envious of God because God is so productive in giving life out of His love so that the Devil destroys what God is doing. SOURCES OF LIFE 1. Life flows if there is Love Love in 1 Cor. 13:4-8 gives life, anything opposite to it is death. Because of the love of Jesus, two miracles happened in Mark 6:21-43, the young girl brought to life and the woman healed from hemorrhaging, on both cases Jesus stressed on Faith- "Do not be afraid, have faith....", "Your faith has saved you..." 2. Life is transmitted through Faith Our response to God’s gift of love is our acceptance of Jesus thus giving us Spiritual life. Faith gives life; that's why during the pandemic, those who have faith "lived"; they "survived" desperation, which is another form of death. It is not enough to provide food, clothing, shelter, etc. to have a decent living to our children, we also need to transmit faith to the future generation. Bring your children to Jesus, to the Church; let Jesus be known not only to our family but also to the community. Transmission of faith is transmission of life. 3. Life is supported through Concrete Acts of Charity Helping our neighbors who are in need will feel that they are loved, that they are significant and that will bring life into them. Jesus is made known to others by caring for them. When you give, you lose a bit of yourself and that is imitating Jesus - "that though rich He became poor for your sake" (2 Cor 8:7,9,13-15). THE CHALLENGE “Couples for Christ are to be agents of God in the world where there are lots of threats to life." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the homily of Cardinal Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, during the 40th Anniversary (1981-2021) of Couples for Christ on June 26, 2021. Hurricane Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities June 14, 2021 From the Office for Social Ministry Now that hurricane season has begun, it is a good time to stock up for essential supplies if you haven’t done so already. Hawaii’s season of tropical cyclones lasts from June through the end of November. So, it’s important to be prepared with the necessary items to make it through a natural disaster. Last year, our islands were spared from the impacts of Hurricane Douglas, which came dangerously close to the state in July 2020. Although pandemic shutdowns had already forced residents to stock up in preparation for supply shortages, many were still unprepared, particularly persons with disabilities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reminds us that “it takes one direct hit, or even a close call, to have a major impact on daily life here in the Hawaiian Islands.” It’s important that we get the word out to our vulnerable neighbors the importance of emergency and disaster preparedness so to keep healthy and safe. The Americans with Disabilities National Network has prepared various checklists and resource sheets to include: • Emergency Food and Water and • Carry On You Emergency Supplies The Pacific ADA Center region encompasses Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawaii. Their mission is to build a partnership between the disability community and the general public.
