She is also the founder of CoThinkk, a social change philanthropy committed to shifting the economic mobility, leadership, health and wellbeing, and education narrative of communities of color in Western NC. She is the Director of the Western Women’s Business Center and previously the Latino Program Director for Carolina Small Business Development Fund ( CSBDF). Zuri also is the founder of a non-profit organization “ReliefBox” that provides humanitarian aid for people of Venezuela that are in need of dry goods, medicine and toiletries.
CELEBRATES WOMEN LEADERS IN ATHLETICS, ACADEMICS AND ALL AREAS OF LIFE WITH A SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR WOMANUP NOMINEE Janet R. Cone Senior Administrator for University Enterprises & Director of Athletics A true coach and champion at heart, Janet R. Cone has served as UNC Asheville’s Director of Athletics since 2004. As the Senior Administrator for University Enterprises, Cone led the opening of the Wilma M. Sherrill Center and the expansion of the Karl Straus Track Facility, as well as the addition of Women’s Swimming and Women’s Golf as the Bulldogs’ 15th and 16th sports programs. She also helped create the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission and is a former chair. She currently serves as a founding board member for the group. From 2014 to 2019 Cone was the only woman serving on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee that selects and seeds the teams for March Madness. She was one of just 28 Directors of Athletics to be named as an Under Armour AD of the Year in 2013 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. She was honored as a I-AAA ADA 2019 Builders’ Award Recipient for her many accomplishments in College Athletics, and she was selected to serve on the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (D1-AAA-ADA) Executive Committee from 2020-21. AWARDS PRESENTATION Suzanne DeFerie Lifetime Achievement Award presented by First Bank Named in honor of Suzanne DeFerie, this award recognizes a woman who has distinguished herself in business over a lifetime. Throughout her 40-year career in the financial services industry, Suzanne was a trail blazer, providing both organizational and community leadership and mentoring to other women. A native of Western North Carolina and graduate of Appalachian State University, Suzanne joined Asheville Savings Bank in 1991 as Chief Financial Officer - the bank’s first female executive, moving into the role of President/CEO in 2008. At the time, she was one of only two female bank CEO’s in North Carolina. In 2017, when Asheville Savings Bank merged with First Bank, Suzanne became EVP & Regional president for First Bank’s Western Region, retiring from the position in fall 2019. 2021 Nominees: • Becky Anderson, Advisor for The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation • Janet R. Cone, Director of Athletics and University Enterprises at UNC Asheville • Linda McDaniel, Executive Director of ARC of Buncombe County KEYNOTE SPEAKER Mirna Valerio Mirna Valerio is a native of Brooklyn, NY, a former educator, cross-country coach, ultramarathoner, and author of the Amazon bestselling memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. Although she began running in high school, she recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008 and started her blog Fatgirlrunning—about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner endurance athletes— while training for her first marathon. Mirna’s athletic story has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Runner’s World, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in the viral REI- produced documentary short, The Mirnavator. Her writing has been featured in Women’s Running Magazine, Self Magazine Online, Outside Online, and Runner’s World Magazine. In 2018, she was chosen as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and most recently appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show and Access Hollywood.
