INTRODUCTION WELCOME BSSH Friends and Colleagues, Visiting Lecturers and Guests It’s a pleasure to welcome you all back together again for the 2021 BSSH Autumn Scientific Meeting. It’s been a long separation through the pandemic and we will be trying to make up some lost ground with two days packed with science, surgery and, of course, social. The surgeons from Oxford and the surrounds have helped put together a fantastic and forward looking scientific programme and despite the ongoing global restrictions we are pleased to be able to welcome several European guest lecturers. We’ve got several important ‘Firsts’ happening at this meeting: • We welcome the inaugural four BSSH International Travelling Fellows, from US, Italy, France and Spain. They have spent the past weeks visiting three of our top Hand Units and now attend our Scientific Meeting before returning home. • We have the first meetings between our newly trained BSSH Mentors and their Mentees. • We have our first ever Art Club and Masterclass running parallel to the scientific sessions for anyone to drop in on, whether your interest is in creating or admiring. • And importantly, in another step towards embedding the principles of equality and diversity in the BSSH, we have our first Babies and Carers room. Finally, I am honoured and privileged to host two brilliant surgeons and orators, Donald Sammut and Carlos Heras-Palou, to be my Douglas Lamb and Harold Bolton lecturers. I do hope you enjoy the meeting, learn something, catch up with old friends and have a great evening at the Society Dinner in the magnificent Keble College Hall. Sue Fullilove BSSH President 2021 4
INTRODUCTION A Note from the Oxford Organising Committee... It has been a great pleasure to work with our president to create a programme that we hope you will find varied, enjoyable, informative and thought-provoking. Our meeting opens with two exciting sessions probing the future of hand surgery and hand surgery research. Sections on basal thumb joint arthritis, scaphoid fractures and peripheral nerve surgery explore the frontiers of clinical practice and how to optimise the care we currently provide. The free paper sessions are the traditional way for work to be show cased, but look out for the rapid fire infographic bell sessions. Friday afternoon provides an opportunity to look at value-based hand surgery whilst, in another session, an experienced panel put their heads together to explore how to deal with things when we don’t “get it right first time”. In selecting our chairs for this meeting, we have tried to achieve a blend of individuals who are well established within hand surgery, along with some newer faces and senior trainees. We think this will result in both innovative content and delivery. We are extremely grateful to our chairs for all the commitment and effort they have shown in putting together their sessions. We also owe a debt of gratitude for the tireless work, through uncertain and changing circumstances, of the BSSH secretariat to enable us to deliver the “BSSH Autumn Scientific Meeting Oxford 2021”. We hope you enjoy the meeting and your stay in our historic university city. If you have any queries during the meeting or just fancy a chat, please don’t hesitate to approach us. Nick Riley and Mike Lamyman 5
