How Do I Pay for College? What is the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and why is it important? The EFC is the number used to determine how much you and your family are expected to pay towards your college education. The EFC formula is calculated by the federal government after you complete the FAFSA and stays the same from school to school. Your demonstrated need, or the gap between the EFC and cost of attendance, changes depending on total school price (e.g., tuition, room and board, or off-campus living expenses, and textbooks). See the table below for an example. All institutions strive to award aid to meet the gap between the cost of attendence and your EFC, but not all have the same types or amounts of aid available. Common Financial Aid Awards for Ohio Students This is not an exhaustive list of the financial aid available in Ohio, but it provides an overview of the most common types of awards students may receive.
