INSTRUCTOR JOHAN SIGGESSON Johan Siggesson is a wildlife photographer from Sweden residing on the small Mediterranean island of Malta. From an early age he was passionate about animals and the natural world. Before Animal Planet, Nat Geo Wild and the likes, he was always glued in front of the weekly nature program on Swedish state television. No matter if it was lions in Africa, wolves in Yellowstone or Polar bears in Svalbard; Johan practically grew up with Sir David Attenborough’s voice at the back of his head. From the moment Johan bought his first digital camera he was hooked. The creativity that is unleashed with instant feedback on the screen, variable ISO and more or less unlimited image capacity is something that really appeals to him. This, combined with a passion for animals, is a recipe for a wildlife photographer. When Johan is not out photographing or stuck in front of his Mac processing images, he enjoys a good meal or watching a game of soccer with friends… and a cold beer. He hopes that you like viewing his images just as much as he enjoyed taking them! In early, 2019 Johan Siggesson was one of the fortunate to be accepted into Sweden’s most prestigous nature photography association called Naturfotograferna/N. A great honour! Artist’s Statement Seeing is only the first step in the creative process. Experiencing what I see and conveying it to You is where the creation becomes engaging. With nature as an eternal source of inspiration, I create works where my impressions of my surroundings are expressed on paper. Creating harmony of the uninterrupted complexity that exists in nature is stimulating and inspiring. Although my images have different motives and have been created using different techniques in the camera, all images are permeated with respect and reverence for the, sometimes very fragile, nature that surrounds us.
Day 1 ARRIVE DAR ES SALAAM | WELCOME TO TANZANIA Hotel Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Courtyard Or similar Meal D Upon arrival, you will be greeted and met with Expedition Travellers representative at the arrival lobby of Julius Nyerere International Airport and you will be transferred to your hotel. At leisure the rest of the day so you can have a proper rest and recovery from your long journey to Tanzania.
Day 2 & 3 TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA Hotel Tarangire Sopa Lodge or similar Meal B, L, D After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Arusha to begin your safari tour. Upon arrival, we will stop in the town center of Arusha for a quick city tour which also allows you to make any last minute purchase before we head off to begin your first game drive to Tarangire National Park. The game drive to Tarangire National Park will take approximately 4 hours giving you plenty of time to photograph the wildlife on the way in. The road takes you south, a traditional farming landscape eventually giving way to the welcome sight of giant baobab trees and wild savannah – this is Tarangire National Park. Your lodge is set in a remote and little-visited area of the park and in an area close to permanent water. Such a location means excellent game viewing, and your guide will be on the lookout for the park’s famous red dust- coated elephants as well as big cats and some of the hundreds of bird species recorded in here. Your thatch-covered tent radiates an easy elegance and includes an outdoor shower as part of its en suite bathroom. Tarangire National Park is well known for its huge elephant population and baobab trees. It forms the centre of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras.
Day 4, 5 & 6 THE NGORONGORO HIGHLANDS, TANZANIA Hotel Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge or similar Meal B, L, D Returning north, the Rift Valley landscape begins to rise as you travel onto the Ngorongoro Highlands, spotting wildlife on the way as well as red-robed Maasai cattle herders. Your accommodation for three nights is Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge in the Highlands Ngorongoro; its modern, high-tech tented suites tucked away on the slopes of the extinct Olmoti volcano. The views from your suite and the main lodge are magnificent and you have plenty of time to explore the area. There is a full-day Big 5 safair in the Ngorongoro Crater itself to look forward to as well as game drives in the teeming Ngorongoro Conservancy. Back at your suite, a wood-burning stove wards off the high- altitude chill and you have 180 degree views from the floor-to- ceiling window. Widely regarded as a microcosm of natural habitats in Africa and often touted as a veritable Garden of Eden, the ash from the volcano that collapsed here created fertile soil that encouraged rich savanna grasslands, which now support the largest herds of hoofed animals in the world and of course, this attracts numerous predators and birdlife. Within the crater lie many types of ecosystem, including riverine forests, open plains, freshwater and alkaline lakes. The scenery is spectacular as you descend almost 600 meters down to the crater floor. Chances are, you will see a considerable variety of wildlife in this compact area and hopefully, you will see some or all of the “Big Five” creatures (Lion, African Leopar, Rhinoceros, African Elephant & African Buffalo) that rule here. Animals within the Ngorongoro Crater are not shy from people and safari vehicles, so it is easier to see them up close. The Masai are permitted to water their cattle at the permanent lake and can be seen leading their animals in and out of the crater. The most commonly seen animals are the lion, wildebeest, zebra, eland, bushbuck, cheetah, jackal, buffalo, Grant’s gazelle and Thompson’s Gazelle. You may even catch a glimpse of the highly endangered black rhinoceros.
Day 7, 8 & 9 UNDER CANVAS IN THE SERENGETI, TANZANIA Hotel Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp or similar Meal B, L, D The “Endless Plains” of the Serengeti span some 14,700 square kilometers and capture the essence of Africa, with their main claim to fame the 3 million or so animals that make their home here. Massive numbers of grazing animals and various predators can be seen – wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, lion, cheetah, warthog, hyena, hippo and ostrich – and the interaction between the many species often provides some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. For the next three days, you will start around sunrise for a morning game drive and followed by another game drive in the afternoon as the animals tend to be more active in the cooler hours of the day. You will return to camp during the hours when the temperature becomes too hot in the middle of the day to rest and relax at the camp. Depending on the wildlife movements and opportunities for sightings, the drive may continue through lunch and last all day. In this case, you will return to camp in the late afternoon. As our camp site is near the path where the great Wildebeest Migration takes place every year, the wildlife viewing is even more dramatic. Namiri Plains lies directly on the path of the moving animals.
Day 10 & 11 MAASAI MARA NATIONAL WILDLIFE RESERVE, KENYA Hotel The Mara Engai Lodge or similar Flight Chartered Flight Meal B, L, D After breakfast, we will board our chartered flight directly from our camp to Maasai Mara Game Reserve at around 8:00am. The flight will take approximately 30 minutes and we will be flying in low altitude so you have an aerial view to look at the wildlife. Upon arrival at The Mara Engai Lodge, you will be checked into your tent and will have a brief break to refresh yourself before we head out for the morning game drive. The three days at Maasai Mara National Wildlife Reserve will be fully packed days doing an all day game drive with the morning and evening drives. With only two people sharing a 4x4, your driver can take you to routes based on your photography preference. . We roll through all corners of the reserve and shall spot thousands of wildlife including: Buffalos, hippos in the Mara River, Zebras, Elephants, Thomson’s Gazelles, Grant gazelles, Topis, Rhinos, Leopards, Cheetahs, Jackals, Lions, Giraffes, Warthogs (Pumbas) and many more. Drive toward the Mara River for viewing the Wildebeest prepare or do the migration. If lucky and have enough time to wait, you will witness this once in a life time Natural wonder. Have your picnic lunch under the shed of a tree in the middle of the mara wilderness, drive back to your lodge with more sightings on the way for relaxation and refreshments. Dinner is served at the lodge. During the stay in Maasai Mara National Reserve, we will arrange a low altitude balloon flight for you to take aerial pictures from atop to capture the animal migration in progress.
Day 12 MAASAI MARA - NAIROBI, KENYA | END OF SERVICE Flight Chartered Flight Meal B After breakfast, you will board our chartered flight from our camp to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi for your return flight. This day will mark the end of our service.
