M ES S AGE FR O M TH E CE O Sue Carr, Watercolor The School of Botanical Art and Illustration really gets to the heart of who Denver Botanic Gardens is as an institution. The fusion of science and art, natural wonder and human creation perfectly defines it. This year, we are pleased to announce that the school is doubling its capacity thanks to generous donors who have made the construction of the Freyer – Newman Center possible. These new opportunities underscore the Gardens’ dedication to bringing relevant experiences to more people than ever before. The School of Botanical Art and Illustration offers multiple avenues for artists of all skill levels to pursue their passion. For an initial goal, a foundational certificate offers instruction in skills and media essential to a solid footing in the discipline. For those seeking additional challenge and reward, a diploma in botanical illustration offers further achievement. LOUISE BATH, Colorado Rosemåling in the Os Style Although folk art flourished throughout Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, it achieved its highest level of creativeness in the remote valleys of Norway from 1750 on. From its origins in the Telemark and Hallingdal, regional styles developed as generations of itinerant painters spread their trade westward to the fjord districts. Latest to develop was folk art in the area south of Bergen known as Os. This style features bright, colorful flowers painted on cupboards, trunks, beds and smaller traditional baskets and boxes. During this class you will create an Os design on a small box using typical flower motifs and a colorful palette. These designs are especially attractive to the modern eye. You will also learn about the traditional Norwegian rosemåling styles and how interest in this vigorous art form continues to Louise Bath the modern era. That same year she graduated with a certificate in botanical art and illustration from the Denver Botanic Gardens program. She now teaches rosemåling in Colorado and across the United States. Three trips to Norway in 2013, 2016 and 2018 have given her a wealth of rosemåling knowledge and ideas. = Visiting Instructor 14
