Rules of the THE LOCKWOOD NEW ZEALAND ARIA Competition 1. Competitors are to prepare two Arias of their own selection. Repertoire: The Arias may be chosen from the entire range of the operatic literature as currently performed in opera houses around the world, including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Verismo, Modern, Opera Comique, and Operetta. All Arias must be sung in the original key and language set by the composer, performed from memory with piano accompaniment. Please state opera, composer, and title on your entry form. CLASS 345 WILL BE LIMITED TO 45 ENTRIES. 2. Competitors will perform one Aria in the HEATS, Thursday 29 October 2020 (Class 345). If the competitor is invited to compete in the FINALS, Saturday 31st October 2020 (Class 346) they will perform their second Aria. Competitors must provide two copies of music for these classes. 3. The NEW ZEALAND ARIA FINALISTS will be accompanied by the AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA 4. In choosing your second Aria (Class 346), you will need to ensure that the orchestral music is available in New Zealand (see the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Library). If the Aria of your choice is not listed in the Orchestra’s library, please contact their librarian, Robert Johnson, at your earliest opportunity. Robert’s email address is robertj@apo.co.nz, or you can contact him by telephone on 09-638-6266, Ext. 206. He will advise you as to whether the Aria is available for hire from the National Library of New Zealand or from any other source within New Zealand, or whether it may be possible to obtain the Aria from overseas (and at what cost). In the event of your Aria having to be procured from overseas, you will be charged accordingly. 5. Competitors must be over 18 years of age as at 1 October 2020. 5
6. No official accompanists are appointed. However, if competitors require an accompanist please check on the website (closer to the competition) for contact details to make your own arrangements directly with them. Rehearsals and payments will be negotiated between the competitor and an available accompanist. 7. Time limit is 10 minutes maximum. 8. Attire of formal dress, lounge suit, or costume is required. 9. Competitors must also compete in both: Entry Fee Class 334 Lieder Own Selection $10 Class 336 20th Century Art Song $10 10. Pianist must be advised with entry as it is critical when scheduling classes. NOTES: ● Do NOT send copies of music prior to the competition. JUDGES New Zealand Aria Open Classes Andrew Dalton Andrew Dalton won the ABC’s Instrumental and Vocal Competition (now the Young Performers Awards) and continued his studies in London. Since then, he has toured extensively throughout Europe, appearing at most major festivals including Munich, Berlin, Paris, Ed- inburgh and Salzburg and has undertaken concert tours in Australia, the Far East and U.S.A. His opera performances have similarly taken him throughout Europe and include A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Linz, Lubeck, Karlsruhe, Basel and Cologne; Death in Venice for Scottish Opera and Geneva; Ariodante at the Theatre des Champs Elysees, Paris; L’Egisto for Scottish Opera; Rodrigo in Innsbruck; Agrippina and Le Convenienze ed Inconvenienze di Teatrali at La Fenice, Venice; Orfeo, Geneva; Belshazzar Lausanne Festival; Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Avignon and Lausanne; Fetonte at La Scala Milan, and Messiah at Covent Garden. After returning to live in Australia, Andrew Dalton appeared with Opera Australia in Death in Venice, Il coronazione di Poppea, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and in the highly acclaimed production of Han- del’s Julius Caesare. He has given concerts with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and performed with all the Australian Symphony Orchestras. He has toured extensively with the Swedish Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and made several internationally acclaimed recordings (for BIS, EMI, and ETCETERA labels), including solo recitals of Henry Purcell and John Dowland lute songs. His television appear- ances have included the title role in Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista for Swedish television; a film on the life of Queen Christina (which won the Prix Italia Award); a documentary on Handel for Granada Television, and Opera Australia’s production of Julius Caesare. He has held teaching positions at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music; the Music Department of The University of Queensland; Head of Voice at the Canberra School of Music , and currently lectures in Voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. 7
JUDGES New Zealand Aria Open Classes Roxane Hislop Roxane Hislop is one of Australia’s most respected and accomplished Mezzo Sopranos. She is a graduate of Sydney University, the NSW Conservatorium of Music and holds a Masters Degree in Arts Adminis- tration from RMIT University. Awards include the Sydney Sun Aria, and the Australian Regional finals of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. She has been nominated five times for a Green Room Award and was named best female artist in a supporting role for Maddalena (Rigoletto) and Olga (Eugene Onegin). Miss Hislop has an Operatic repertoire of over 60 roles, 50 of these with Opera Australia. Her operatic repertoire includes the title roles in Car- men and La Pericole, Rosina (Barber of Seville), Dalila (Samson et Dalila) Varvara (Katya Kabanova) Mistress Page(Falstaff ),Getrude (Hansel and Gretel)Baba the Turk (the Rake’s Progress),Marcellina and Cherubino (Le Nozze de Figaro) and Cornelia (Julius Ceaser). She has appeared with every major opera company and Symphony orchestra in Australia and her concert repertoire includes Dream of Gerontius, Missa Soleminis, The Messiah, St John and St Matthew Passion, Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass , A child of our Times as well as Opera Galas. Recent appearances include Mary in Die Fliegende Hollander (Melbourne Opera) Teresa in La Sonnam- bula ( Victorian Opera) Dame Hannah in Ruddigore (Opera Queensland) Mrs Herring in Albert Herring and Rossweisse in Die Walkure (Opera Australia) . Miss Hislop is passionate about mentoring the next generation of young singers, is on the vocal staff at the University Of Melbourne Conservatorium Of Music and serves on several Music Boards. In demand as an adjudicator Roxane has been on the panel for the Lexus Song Quest (New Zealand), Melbourne Herald Sun Aria Competition, Sydney Sun Aria and in 2019 the Opera Foundation for Young Australians Awards and Opera Awards for the Music and Opera Singers Trust. JUDGES New Zealand Aria Under 21 Catherine Pierard - Mezzosoprano Catherine Pierard has pursued an international career as an established concert and recording artist .A specialist in both early and contemporary vocal music she has been a frequent soprano soloist at the Proms, the South Bank and major British and European Festivals. Catherine worked with the Glyndebourne Festival and Touring Opera and English Touring Opera in the roles of Fiordiligi and Donna Elvira. Other roles include Ariadne in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Queen Elizabeth in Britten’s Gloriana, Tatiana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Stravinski’s Oedipus Rex, Berlioz’ Faust and Beatrice et Benedict, Jan- acek’s Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev’s War and Peace, Handel’s Apollo and Daphne, Handel’s Julius Cesare, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Caccini’s Euridice, Gluck’s Orfeo, Gluck’s Iphigenie en Tauride, Handel’s Alceste, Britten’s Rape of Lucretia and Monteverdi’s Poppea. Commercial discs to date are the critically acclaimed Herbert Howells’ songs (Chandos) with Julius Drake; Monteverdi arias (Hyperion); Mon- teverdi’s Poppea with Hickox (Virgin Classics); Thomas Arne’s Alfred (BBC Music); Mozart’s The Magic Flute with Norrington (EMI); Britten’s Rape of Lucretia with Hickox (Chandos); award-winning Purcell’s Dioclesian - The Masque and Dioclesian Acts I-IV with Hickox and the Collegium Musicum 90 (Chandos); and Purcell’s The Fairy Queen with Norrington and the London Classical Players (EMI). She has also recorded regularly for BBC Radio 3, adjudicated national exams and competitions both in the UK and NZ, and is much in demand as a coach for chamber music and young singers. New Zealand Aria Under 21 Anna Pierard - Soprano Raised in HB, music was always the focus for Anna, and she was a mem- ber of the NZ Secondary Students Choir and Orchestra, National Youth Choir and Orchestra, as a violist and singer. She gained her Dip.Perf.Art (Voice) at EIT and following that, travelled to London, to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to take up a scholarship and study singing. There, whilst studying for her Masters, she met her husband Jose Apari- cio, a flautist and conductor. Both consequently moved to Amsterdam where Anna studied opera at the Royal Conservatoire. Following her graduation, she performed as a soloist at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Palau de la Musica (Valencia), Teatro Castellar (Castellon, Spain), La Monnaie (Royal Opera House, Belgium), Opera du Rhin (Strasbourg), amongst others. In 2009, she returned to NZ and since, has performed frequently with NZ Opera, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, APO, CPO and the ACS, as well as performing locally with the Napier Civic Choir. 9

RULES OF THESE COMPETITIONS 1. COMPETITORS - These competitions are open to all comers. 2. AGE LIMIT - To be taken as at 1 October 2020. Satisfactory proof of age must be produced if required by the Committee. 3. ENTRIES - Early bird entries must be in by 25 August 2020. After this date an additional $50.00 will be payable with your entry. All entries must be lodged by 5pm on or before 25 August 2020. LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. ENTRANCE FEES MUST BE PAID AT THE TIME OF ENTRY. The Executive Committee reserves the right to refuse an entry. Only one entry from each competitor is allowed in each class. 4. SONG TITLES - Titles of all items must be inserted on the entry form. No change of item will be permitted after late closing date. In all classes, competitors may not render any piece with which they have previously won at these competitions, and must not give the same item in more than one class. JUDGES’ COPIES of items must have competitor’s name, the class number clearly printed on the top right-hand corner of the front cover. These must be handed to the appropriate Convenor before the class commences, and be collected on the completion of the class. 5. JUDGES - No competitor who has been regularly taught by the Judge during one year preceding the competitions will be allowed to compete. Communications with the Judge, either by competitors, teachers, or any other interested parties prior to, or during the competitions is prohibited. A judge reserves the right to communicate if appropriate. Additional adjudicators may be appointed as required to accommodate entrants levels. 6. SUBSTITUTE JUDGE - The Committee reserves the right to appoint a substitute Judge for an announced Judge when necessary. 7. ORDER OF PERFORMANCE - Competitors compete in the order in which they appear in the programme. Any change must be with the permission of the appropriate Convenor. 8. PRIZE MONEY - All donated prize money as listed in the Syllabus Programme for the current year will be awarded. Where there is a minimum of three entries, the Judge reserves the right to award prize money appropriately. 9. ACCOMPANISTS - These will be listed on the website (www.nzaria.org) as they become available. 10. PROTESTS - Competitors desiring to enter a protest must lodge the same in writing with the Protest Committee, together with the grounds on which it is based, and a sum of $20. Should the protest, on investigation by the Protest Committee, be deemed frivolous or unfounded, the deposit shall be forfeited. No protest will be entertained unless it is made within 12 hours after the Judge’s award is announced in the particular item. The decision of the Protest Committee shall be final. 11. STAGE - No person, other than the officials, will be permitted backstage, or at the side of the stage. No prompting, or assistance of any kind may be rendered during the performance except by the Judge, or his/her appointee. 13

ENGRAVING - This is the responsibility of the award winner, who should make certain that it conforms to the size of that of the previous winners, and that the year of winning the award be named. 13. RETURN OF TROPHIES - All trophies awarded at the 2020 competition must be returned to: The Event Co-ordinator, P O Box 1194, Rotorua, no later than 5 September 2021. To avoid the cost of packaging and postage, alternative arrangements may be made by contacting the Event Co-ordinator. All trophies should be returned in good condition. (Due to trophy coating, polishing is NOT required.) 14. GENERAL RESERVATION - The Executive Committee reserves the right of determining the status of all competitors, and of applying and interpreting all of the rules. The decision of the Committee is final. 15. THE COMMITTEE - Reserves the right to cancel a class where there is less than a minimum requirement of three entries. 16. NO ENTRY WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL PAYMENT IS RECEIVED. 14
