iPad FAQs: 1. What are the rules for iPad use in the classroom? The “top ten rules” for classroom iPad use are listed on the following page. 2. I do not have internet access at home, how can my son/daughter complete homework? *School is open at 7:15 am and there is tutoring available after school on specific days and wi-fi is available at this time. *Free wi-fi is available at many local establishments, including the public library. * We now have a partnership program between D214 and Sprint for low-income families who need internet access. Applications are available in Student Services. 3. What are the common apps/websites that my child will be using? This is very teacher/course specific, however, some commonly used apps/websites in the classroom include: Evernote, Notability, Schoology, Moodle, Safari, YouTube, Puffin (for use when a website uses Adobe Flash - some textbooks require this), and Infinite Campus. Teachers will provide more specific websites and apps during the first week of school and at Open House. 4. How can I control how much my child is playing games or using social media on their iPad? Parents set the rules in your own home. Some parents have found it helpful to designate a specific space in the house where the iPad is permitted to be used. Others have set passwords on their wi-fi and only enter the code when students need access for school reasons. We also encourage conversation about time management, distractions, and managing life in a connected society. 5. Why do we give complete access to the iPads? One of our goals is to prepare students to make good decisions and successfully manage living in a connected world. Guidance at school and at home can prepare them for life’s challenges. Instead of taking the approach that we filter and restrict their access, we are striving to help them make educated, informed decisions about their digital footprint. 6. What happens if my child breaks his/her iPad? The ipad protection plan is included in the registration fees. 22
