The Baird “Best” tugboats were a fixture on Burrard Inlet from the 1920s to 1974, towing log booms, docking ships, or ferrying passengers. The Inlet froze several times in the 1930s and 1940s, allowing people to skate across. In this photo, taken in 1948, Bill Baird (on the ice) tells sons Bill Jr. and Bus how to adjust the boom logs strapped to the bow to create an icebreaker. Port Moody was officially named western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1879. By 1884, rumours abounded that a branch line would be built to Coal Harbour or English Bay. This did not sit well with Port Moody investors. The second Canadian Pacific Railway Station in Port Moody was built in 1908 just north of the former Andrés Wines. On April 10, 1945, a steam engine pulled the Station along the train tracks to the foot of Queens Street, so it would be located closer to the centre of town. The Station only blocked the double mainline tracks for a day. The structure was moved again in 1978, by truck, to its current location on Murray Street, where it became the Port Moody Station Museum. The Ioco baseball team, pictured here in 1925, played with other industry teams from Coquitlam, Hammond, Haney, and Port Moody in the Dewdney League in the 1920s. Imperial Oil hired employees for their baseball abilities, which helped them to win the provincial championship in 1921. This photo shows Rocky Point Tidal Swimming Pool, with McNair Sawmill visible across the inlet, in 1942. The inlet pool was popular in the 1940s and 1950s, and had lifeguards on duty in later years. It was replaced by the current, in-ground pool in the mid-1960s. Cap Hobbis didn’t like walking to work at the Flavelle sawmill, so he built himself a bike from a kit and Cap’s Bicycles was born. The Hobbis family participated in a variety of community events in Port Moody. In this photo, taken in 1963, they can be seen riding their penny-farthing bikes on St. Johns Street during the May Day parade. There is still a Cap’s bicycle shop in town. The Port Moody School District, formed in 1884, had one-room schools until about 1909, when the four-room Port Moody Central School was built. The whole school – 75 students in grades 1 through 8 – is pictured in this photo from 1913. Eventually, the school expanded to include grades 9 through 12. The Ioco Bowling Green, located at Ioco Road and First Avenue, was built by Imperial Oil Refinery employees around 1928. The bowling league was recreational at first but became competitive by 1937 when it hosted a team from South Africa. Tournaments continued through 1954 and ended with the decline of the Ioco Townsite.
