6 Chairman’s Message 7 A very warm welcome to A very warm the Emirates welcome to Airline Festival the Emirates of Literature Airline Festival of Literature It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 11th edition of the Festival. Every year, I am awed, intrigued, informed and entertained in equal measure by the sessions that make up the multifaceted Festival programme. This year is no exception. Bringing together the crème de la crème of innovation, thought leadership and storytelling, the Festival is a unique event in the annual calendar. There are plenty of events, but few with such far-reaching consequences. Reading is known to expand our horizons and transport us to new places. But the most important place it can take us is into another person’s shoes, letting us walk their path, allowing us to see the world through their eyes. This makes literature the most powerful art form imaginable. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum Children that grow up with books are more likely to do well in school as well as in their future careers. They are healthier, happier, and more empathetic. Imagine what that could mean when it is applied to the entire population. In spite of all the competing demands on their attention, children rejoice in the Festival programme, and in the contact they get with the authors. I have talked about children, but I have also seen adults as excited as children when they queue up to get a book signed by their favourite author. The opportunity to reconnect with books is also a very important part of the Festival. I am proud of our long-standing relationship with the Festival and the Emirates Literature Foundation, and I look ahead to the future with confidence and optimism because of it. Board of Trustees I urge you to explore the programme, try something new, and enjoy seeing the world from a different perspective. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman HH Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman Isobel Abulhoul OBE, CEO & Trustee Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum Dr Lowai Mohammed Belhoul, Trustee President, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority HE Mohammed Al Murr, Trustee Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group Chairman, Dubai Airports Professor Rafia Obaid Ghubash, Trustee Chairman, Emirates Literature Foundation Boutros Boutros, Trustee
