INTRODUCTION Surrey Arts has been proudly providing over 50 years of music tuition and 26 years of arts development services to the residents of Surrey Surrey Arts’ aim is to provide the communities of Surrey opportunities to engage in arts activities, to help develop a sense of space and to enrich peoples’ lives. We strongly believe that everyone in our community should have equal access to the arts. We are only able to realise this ambition by working together with an amazing group of cultural partners, public sector organisations and other groups, as well as a diverse team of volunteers who support what we do. Surrey Music Hub Surrey Music Hub is a network of schools and music organisations led by Surrey Arts. By working together we bring a diverse range of musical opportunities to children and young people across Surrey, both in schools and in the wider community. Surrey Music Hub is also part of the South East Hub Alliance that includes Surrey, Kent, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. Examples of Hub projects in 2019-20 include: 18 CPD workshops for Surrey schools attended by 349 teachers Surrey Music Hub: School’s Professional Development Day such as Vocal Health and Confidence for Teachers
The Horley Project The Horley Project has now entered its second year. This project was originally set up at the behest of schools to meet a local need to build up instrumental learning in Horley schools. Learners from the first year have now entered regular group lessons at their school, or in the new after school music centre at Oakwood School. A fresh new batch of woodwind and brass learners joined the project this year, further building up the new Horley Orchestra. The rehearsals have been great fun, and have even continued online during the lockdown. Trust. Surrey Music Hub I Speak Music The I Speak Music Community Orchestra is designed to celebrate the diversity of Surrey’s communities. I Speak Music welcomes young people from all backgrounds, with particular interest in hearing from refugees, unaccompanied minors, BAME communities and those who sing or play non-western musical instruments. some new people “It’s fantastic, it’s the first time I’ve sung. Ensembles Surrey Arts provides over 40 different choirs, bands, orchestras and groups across the county for a wide range of instruments and for people of all ages and abilities. UP! Orchestra The Orchestra of Unlimited Potential is an award winning ensemble designed to be accessible for all young people regardless of their circumstances or musical ability. First Access First Access is a scheme detailed in the National Plan for Music Education with a key objective to provide all children with the opportunity to learn an instrument at no additional cost to them. Currently subsidising Charanga licences for 182 schools out of 258 with a Key Stage 1 cohort “In Surrey we are keen to give pupils this opportunity at the earliest age so that they can develop and enjoy music making throughout their time at school. We are delighted that since we launched our Key Stage 1 programme in 2012 many thousands of children and their teachers have enjoyed playing recorders and percussion instruments at school. “ Instrument Hire • Over 5,900 instruments, regularly cleaned, repaired and replaced • Subsidised rates for all those learning with Surrey Arts • 1,800 instruments used in schools for school projects • Varying sizes of instruments to suit all ages By appointment only. Events 2019 Primary Festivals The Primary Schools Music Festivals have been running in Surrey for over 25 years and offer Surrey primary schools the opportunity to join forces and sing as one large choir to packed auditoriums in some of the county’s largest venues. Pupils get the opportunity to sing a variety of music from classical to popular songs including music from West End shows, attracting annual audiences from across Surrey. “You play a lot of fun games, have loads of things to do, lots of singing and you get fresh air too!” Singing Picnics Singing Picnics give primary school children an opportunity to sing together and enjoy a picnic lunch at parks and inspirational spaces across Surrey. The Picnics are a low-cost, low-pressure way for schools to take part in group music making without the need to prepare a formal performance. Master Classes & Holiday Courses Easter Music Course The Surrey Arts residential Easter music course at Royal Alexandra & Albert School, Reigate has been running for over 40 years and offers in-depth orchestral, wind band, jazz band, string ensemble and choral courses for young musicians over the Easter Holidays. 76 main course students 43 mini course students 30 singing workshop attendees 69 ‘come and try’ visitors 43 Orchestra Explorers “I enjoyed trying new things on the drum kit, timpani & bass. Surrey Artists’ Open Studios WHEN? Open Studios 2019: 1 - 16 June 2019 SAOS Online Shop: 16 Nov - 21 Dec 2019 Surrey Artists’ Open Studios summer event has been running each year since 2000. Surrey Hills Arts Surrey Hills Arts is a partnership between Surrey Arts and Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It aims to engage and inspire people in the natural landscape through an imaginative programme across the arts promoting heritage, health and tourism. Over 3000 people directly engaged with Surrey Hills events: 1380 at Outdoor Events 800 at Installations 230 at Artist Talks 473 at Art Workshops 70 at Creative Walks 160 people attended our special Art and Landscape symposium at the University for the Creative Arts. ‘I love the installations in their natural setting. Culture Box Surrey Enriching lives through creativity and culture Culture Box Surrey is the Cultural Education Partnership (CEP) for the county of Surrey. CEPs are a national initiative led by Arts Council England to promote cultural education for children and young people in local areas. Our vision is that every child and young person in Surrey has the chance to experience and participate in high quality, inspiring arts and cultural learning, both in and out of school. PLANNED NEWS: In 2019-2020 Culture Box Surrey successfully bid for over PROJECTS £200k of funding from Artswork’s Better Lives Through (2020-23) Culture fund for the next phase of its work. And as a result, between 2020-23 Culture Box Surrey will lead an ambitious programme in schools and other settings, working with top arts organisations such as Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM), Delight, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Stopgap Dance, The Watts Gallery. We will build on our existing network to create a total of four school clusters in Surrey who will provide mutual advocacy and support for teachers wanting to develop cultural learning opportunities in their schools, in partnership with professional arts practitioners.
