COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION 1st & 3rd Monday • Art of Story Telling Clem Bowen Pathways 1:30pm Join Clem as he tells original stories and folktales from around the world. They are complimented by his use of a fascinating array of traditional and handmade instruments! Community Life / Auction & Antiques May 10th • 11am Activity Room Marilynn Peet A true antique is an item perceived as having value because of its aesthetic or historical significance and at least 100 years old, although today the term is often used loosely to describe any objects that are old. Many auctions are held where individuals can bid on some amazing items. During this class we will discuss auctions and antiques, while discovering their hidden value and meaning. Better Bodies Dana Schury Wednesdays • 10:00am Activity Room Join Maria as she leads a fun filled exercised class based on strengthening your muscles through stretching and light weights. This course will certainly get the blood flowing and your muscles working! Brush Strokes Dana Schury 3rd Tuesday • 1:00pm Pathways Painting can provide an emotional release and create a calming impact. During this hands on class we will work as a group to create a picturesque painting. Civil Rights Leader Megan Richmond August 23rd • 11:00am Activity Room There were many historic speeches, marches and moments that happened during the Civil Rights Movement. During this thought provoking class we will delve into the leaders and acts that helped to change history. 2nd Wednesday • Classic Crooners Community Life Activity Room 3:15pm Over the next 4 months we will talk about the life and legacy of Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Nat King Cole. These crooners certainly could belt out the tunes and stand a cut above the rest.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Cooking through the 2nd Wednesday • Aking De Leon Activity Room Countries 2:00pm Join our Rockland chef, Aking, as he takes our taste buds around the world preparing food from China, Germany, Europe and Spain. You do not want to miss out on these authentic dishes that will certainly please your pallet. Country Western Stars Community Life May 3rd • 11:00am Activity Room It is time to get to know the men behind the hat and the horse. John Wayne, Gene Autry and Zane Grey are a few of the popular cowboys that we will take a deeper look at their famous films and their personal lives. Craft Beer Trends Kate Shanahan 1st Tuesday • 3:15pm Brandywine Room Now is the best time in U.S. history to be a craft beer lover. As a nation, the U.S. now has more beer styles (150+) and brands (20,000+) to choose from than any other market in the world. As of early 2018, more than 6,000 breweries are responsible for the beer brands available in the U.S. During this tasty program we will look at some local breweries and also be able to sample some of their most popular offerings. Cruise Ship Fun Jim Kintz July 10th • 11:00am Activity Room Join Jim as he takes you on adventure at sea. Jim always enjoys vacationing on a cruise ship with his most recent one taking place on the Anthem of the Seas ship that stopped at several islands. During this program he will tell you all that cruise ships have to offer from entertainment and amenities to cuisine and port of calls. Current Events John Williams Wednesdays • 6:30pm Activity Room Come share your thoughts and ideas on today's news. John Williams, a prominent lawyer in Delaware will keep you up to date on all the happenings of today through reviewing headlines, reading newspapers and participating in lively discussions and debates. Dough Art Creations Barbara Nestore 2nd Friday • 2:00pm Activity Room Salt Dough Art are easy and cheap to make, you will find most of the ingredients needed in your kitchen cupboard. Jewelry, ornaments and special projects are some of the types of items we will make during this hands on creative craft class.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Egypt Explored Community Life July 24th • 11:00am Activity Room Did you know that on average only 1 inch of rain falls each year in Egypt or that Egyptians not only mummified people but animals as well? During this class we will explore all things related to the Egyptian culture. Famous Delawareans Megan Richmond 3rd Friday • 11:00am Activity Room Everyone has heard of the famous DuPont family, but did you also know that Caesar Rodney, Harry Heimlach and Robert Montgomery Bird are also from Delaware. For such a small state we certainly have some fascinating individuals who come from our small wonder. Fitness & Food Trends Megan Richmond 2nd Tuesday • 3:15pm Activity Room The Keto Diet, waist trainers, 24 hour gyms, homemade facial creams are some of the latest trends. During this class we will take a look at how fitness trends have changed over time and which ones are still going strong. Flower Power Dana Schury 1st Friday • 11:00am Pathways All flowers have their own special meaning and story. During this program we will showcase roses, carnation, tulips, and hibiscus flowers to name a few. Each program will detail their true meaning and maintenance tips while providing an emotional and sensory stimulating feelings. Food & Science Maria Boslego 2nd Monday • 2:00pm Activity Room Bet you did not realize how much food and science go hand in hand. Each month we will select a different food and perform an experiment. This will certainly be a fun, edible, hands on educational offering. Fresh Fruit Baking Community Life 4th Friday • 11am Activity Room Strawberries, blueberries and oranges are some of the fruit that is currently in season. During this class we will samples various recipes with fresh fruit being the key ingredient. Not only will you get to taste the final product, but everyone will receive a recipe to share with family and friends.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Global Music Maria Boslego 1st Monday • 2:00pm Activity Room We will explore the meaning and history behind music that is popular in Spain, Japan, Italy and Africa. There is something magical about music and this class will give you a greater appreciation for music around the world. Brenda Negron & Holiday Cocktails 4th Tuesday • 3:15pm Activity Room Bobbi Cassidy Join Executive Director, Brenda, and Resident Care Director, Bobbi, as they take you on a flavorful cocktail tour. Each month these ladies will design a special drink based on the feature holiday. Everyone will enjoy sipping their cocktails and learning how to prepare the concoction. 4th Wednesday • Homemade Candy Megan Richmond Activity Room 11:00am Calling everyone with a sweet tooth. During this hands on class we will make chocolate samples, candy cane fudge and rock candy to name a few of the many recipes we will test out. Impact of WWII Community Life 3rd Tuesday • 11:00am Activity Room WWII is a part of history that altered the entire world. During this educational offering we will look at the impact WWII had from a financial, emotional, and physical aspect. Kintz Classic Movie Jim Kintz 2nd Tuesday • 1:40pm Second Floor Lounge Our Maintenance Director, Jim, is a film buff and loves sharing his passion for movies with everyone. Follow the movies from the days of glamour and class. Discuss actors, directors, and the making of the movie. Spend a nice afternoon with a good flick. Kitchen Inventions Samantha Twaddell 3rd Tuesday • 3:15pm Activity Room Of course there are well-known items such as a can opener and a dishwasher that everyone knows about, but what about some newer items as well. The Salad Spinner Nutri-Bullet, and a premium slicer are some of the many unique and new gadgets that will be explored. Perhaps the best part will be tasting what these gadgets make!
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Low Impact Fitness Dana Schury Wednesdays • 10:00am Activity Room Join us for this 30 minutes exercise program as we strengthen your muscles and body. Low impact workouts are typically easier on the body, especially our joints, and can be a great way to get in a heart- pumping workout while reducing the risk of injury – so join us today on the road to health! Every Other Tuesday • Mind & Balance Community Life Activity Room 10:00am During this exercise program we will complete fluid exercise motions, with recognizing our breathing techniques and rate. We all need balance in our lives and during this program we will focus on the body and the holistic approach to health. Mixed Media Community Life 4th Thursday • 6:00pm Activity Room In this course you will use a small coloring photo as the beginning of a painting. A colorful square photo will be selected that has elements that can be continued, such as a flower or horizon lines! Time to test your artistic talents and have some fun! Moving to the Music Community Life Weekends • 11am Activity Room It truly is the magic of music, wherein offers a healing power. Music can ease pain, motivate individuals, improve motivation, increase endurance and even enhance blood vessel function. This exercise program will help us get our bodies into a cardia rhythm when upbeat tunes are played and help us to wind-down and relax when more melodic songs are played. Activity Room / Nature & Art Dana Schury 1st Friday • 2:00pm Outside Patio The beauty of nature. Art is all around us, but sometimes we need to slow down and see what is right in front of our eyes. During this class we will use natures items to create works of art. Leaves, rocks, grass clipping, tree branches and more will be the most commonly used items.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Now Trending Maria Boslego 4th Monday • 2:00pm Activity Room "Trending" is a mutilation of the English language that means "currently popular." There are fitness and food trends or even travel and political event trends. The impressive factor is that trends are always changing. Each month we will focus on the wide variety of topics that are trending based on social network, politics, world news, sports and Hollywood elite. So if you are looking to keep up with what is going on this is certainly an ongoing offering that you must attend. 2nd Wednesday • Periods of Art Community Life Activity Room 11:00am Renaissance, impressionist, romanticism and pop art and will be the key focus eras over the next 4 months. During the class we will take a deeper look at some well-known pieces and the artists that created them Photography Genres Maria Boslego 1st Monday • 11am Activity Room A picture is worth a thousand words ... Some may think it is as easy as point and click when it comes to taking a picture. From candid shots and aerial photography to fashion and landscape photography there are many behind the lens details and thought processes that goes into these snapshots. Silver Screen Legends Melissa Gravatt 3rd Saturday • 10:00am Activity Room We are always captivated with characters that actors play on the silver screen, but do we know the actual person? Carey Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Bette Davis and James Cagney are a few of the many beloved actors and actresses we will be taking a deeper look at. Sing & Share with Joan Joan Wagner 4th Monday • 10:45am Brandywine Room Joan enjoys sharing her passion for music, psalms, and poetry as she leads a spiritual gathering. The program focuses to strengthen your beliefs and passions, while providing the opportunity for deep thought and reflection. Shape & Sculpt Maria Boslego Mondays • 11:00am Activity Room During this exercise class we will focus on toning and sculpting our upper body using free weights. We will have a wide variety of weights sizes for you to use as your strengthen and tone.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION St. John's Explored Brenda Negron June 12 • 11:00am Activity Room Did you know that the Virgin Islands is the only place in the USA where you can drive on the left side of the road or that St. Johns has an underwater national park? Join, Executive Director, Brenda as she shares the insider tips from her favorite travel destination. State by State Beverages Megan Richmond 3rd Monday • 3:15pm Activity Room On this journey not only will you learn about the state itself, but you will be able to sample their signature cocktails. Over the next 4 months we will sample the Alabama Slammer from Alabama and the California Mai Tai, as well as, tasting the Blue Hawaiian from you guessed it Hawaii and round out our journey with an Iowa Sunrise. Not only is this program educational, but entertaining as well. Tai Chi Victoria McGonigle 3rd Tuesday • 10:00am Activity Room Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Join us for this stretching exercise which will help manage stress, promote good health, and improve quality of life. Technology at our Community Life May 22nd • 11:00am Activity Room Fingertips Technology is always changing and advancing overtime. During this class we will look at all of the different ways in which we use technology. From ordering groceries online and booking trips to wireless speakers and the different types of cell phones. This will certainly be an eye opening technology class. Megan Richmond / The Royal Family May 17th • 11:00am Activity Room Brian Phillips Many are captivated with the Royal Family as the British monarchy is one of the most famous families in the world and its royal lineage is one of Europe’s oldest. The traditions and history of the royal family are fascinating to British people and international visitors alike. During this class we will take a deeper look at this famous family. Through the Decades Community Life 1st Tuesday • 11:00am Activity Room Over time things are always evolving. Over the next 4 months we will discuss how cars, fashion, television and payment systems have changed throughout the decades.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Time to Boat Barbara Nestore May 8th • 11:00am Main Lobby Our Rockland receptionist and driver has a passion for boats. She has been lucky enough to own a pontoon, speed boat and luxury cruiser in her lifetime. During this class she will share boating terminology, routine maintenance and all other the other entertainment that comes along with boating. Time to Travel Community Life 1st Saturday • 10:00am Main Lobby Many have had the opportunity to travel to various states, cities and countries. During this class we will select a location and look at the history, landmarks and geography. Watercolor Wonders Community Life 1st Thursday • 6:00pm Activity Room If you are an experienced artist, just beginning or have an appreciation for art then this is the perfect course for you! Watercolor painting is an art form that creates artistic representations, usually on paper, using pigments that are water soluble. You do not have to be Picasso or Matisse to have a good time and test out your artistic talent! Yoga Victoria McGonigle 1st Tuesday • 10:00am Activity Room The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses and postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Explore the inner environment of your body's energy system.
Faculty Biographies NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Maria Boslego Various Courses Community Life assistant Maria, has worked in the health care feel for several years. In Maria’s spare time she enjoys spending time with family, being active, and also enjoys fashion! Maria is an excellent addition to our team! Clem Bowen Art of Story Telling Clem has been telling stories for quite some time. The unique way he crafts tales while making them personal is quite impactful. The use of natural instruments helps to take this musical program to the next level. Bobbi Cassidy Holiday Cocktails / Health Talk with Bobbi Our Resident Care Director has always been passionate about health and wellness! In her spare time she enjoys exercising and spending time with family and friends! Aking De Leon Cooking through the Countries Rockland chef, Aking, has always had a passion for cooking and enjoys trying out different recipes. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with family and friends and always enjoys trying new food dishes. Jim Kintz Kintz Classic Movie Jim, our maintenance director, is always busy making sure the building is in tip top shape. In his spare time he enjoys classic movies, spending time with family and always looks forward to his annual cruise vacation! Victoria McGonigle Tai Chi & Yoga Victoria comes to Rockland Place on a bi-monthly basis to lead the community in physical activity routines that focus on mediation and relaxation, while strengthening the muscles in the body. Victoria works for a company called Living Wellness. It is obvious that Victoria lives a healthy lifestyle, as she participates in regular physical activity and eats nutritiously. Brenda Negron Holiday Cocktails / St. Johns Explored Join our Executive Director as she takes you on a tour of one of her favorite travel destinations, St. John's island. Brenda is also an animal lover and enjoys spending time outside whenever possible!
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Barbara Nestore Time to Boat / Dough Art Barbara us certainly a creative individual and enjoys crafting. While at Rockland she takes on the role of receptionist, driver and assist wherever needed in the community. Additionally, in her spare time she loves spending time on her boat, cooking for her family and setting up parties and events. Megan Richmond Various Courses Megan is currently the Community Life Director at Rockland Place. Megan overseas the programming that takes place in Assisted Living, Our Place and Pathways. While earning her graduate degree in health promotion from the University of Delaware her main focus was on designing, implementing and evaluating programs for diverse populations. Megan enjoys spending time with family and friends, the beach, and traveling. Marilyn Peet Auction & Antiques Resident, Marilyn, enjoys the history behind antiques and is fascinated by the history and value behind certain items. She enjoys friendly conversation, visits with family and being outside. Dana Schury Various Courses Dana certainly makes a positive impact on our community. Dana has a passion for life and she demonstrates this while leading programs. Other passions in her life include her kids, traveling and enjoying life to the fullest! As an art education major Dana certainly has the creative gene that keeps the community vibrant! Kate Shanahan Craft Beer Trends Kate is a sports fan with Steelers and the Penguins being her two favorite teams. She also enjoys a nice craft beer from time to time as well. Donna Teleis Art with Donna Join community member, Donna, as she takes us on an artistic art journey that will help to activity our mind and our imagination thought the creative outlet process.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Samantha Twaddell Kitchen Inventions Our Dining Service Director, Samantha, certainly knows her way around the kitchen! Cooking and baking is her true passion and her culinary creativity is an added bonus. In her spare time she enjoy spending time with friends, her dogs and rooting for the Cowboys. Joan Wagner Sing & Share with Joan Joan says she has been a spiritual person for all of her life. She enjoys volunteering in local community to spread the word of the Lord and share his teachings. John Williams Current Events John is an Attorney at Law, as well as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Delaware. He received is B.A from Rider University and his J.D. from Widener University School of Law. In John’s spare time he enjoys music, travel, skiing, and attending sports events. He thoroughly enjoys the discussion group at Rockland Place as he feels he gets more out of it than the residents, one can learn so much through observation of others.
